Ayam Penyet Ria is an Indonesian restaurant chain specialising in Ayam Penyet (Smashed Fried Chicken in Malay). Ayam Penyet Ria, a fast-food style self-order Indonesian restaurant is one of the most popular ayam penyet cafes in Lucky Plaza. Since this restaurant is halal certified, my ex-colleague and me went to eat lunch together.

There was ample seating place as the restaurant has another unit in second floor, so we ordered our food and drinks at one go.

I liked their Indonesian Iced Tea with Milk.

The Ikan Penyet (Flatten Fish) Set comprised of a plate of plain rice and a plate filled with ikan bawal, kangkong, fried beancurd, beancake, raw cabbage and cucumber, batter crumbs & sambal chilli.

My ex-colleague requested me to take another small plate of sambal chilli at the corner. After eating his Ayam Penyet Set with sambal chilli for a while, he realised that their sambal chilli was incredibly spicy yet addictive.

The nicely spiced batter and those crumbs was quite good as compared with Long John Silver's.

The Tauhu Telur (Fried Bean Curd & Egg) was a little different from the other Indonesian restaurants. The peanut sauce for tauhu telur in this restaurant is fragrant and it is a must try dish because it is yummy to the max!

Hopefully you chill, relax and enjoy the amazingly delicious food tremendously as my ex-colleague shown in the above photograph.

Conclusion: A little pricey for the Ayam Penyet (chicken) set.

Sometimes I get homesick and miss Indonesian food so much. One of alternative places to go everytime this homesick strikes is Ayam Penyet Ria. It's quite tricky to find a really good and authentic Indonesian ayam penyet in Singapore. Ice Milo - $2.05. Basically Milo can be either hit or miss. Here, they served hot Milo with ice cubes! I was so disappointed to see the ice cubes melted really quickly. It became diluted and tasteless.

Ayam Penyet + Rice - $7.40. This set menu came with smashed chicken thigh, fried tempe (soybean cake), fried beancurd, and sambal. The chicken was tender, juicy, and crispy. The tempe and beancurd were tasty as well. The sambal was burning hot! As an aftermath, I got stomachache the next day.

Overall, Ayam Penyet Ria serves good ayam penyet at affordable price. Will return again when I'm craving for ayam penyet hehe.

THis Indonesian restaurant is always super crowded during lunch and dinner hours. I have waited nearly fifteen minutes at my table before the food is served to me. At the price of $7.40 for my Ayam Penyat which include a plate of plain rice, is consider reasonable priced. Chicken meat is dry but soft and tasty, with really crispy crust on the outer layer. Kang kong is abit too dry and not flavourful. Service was alright but not really that friendly. Restaurant is spacious and cooling.

And while we were looking over the menu, we saw the waiter carrying this basket of fried stuff.
No not the kerupuk lah. It was something that seemed very stringy. And then we saw the promo poster.
Automatically we knew we had to order it.

And for the record, that looks absolutely NOTHING like the poster lah.

This is apparently a new item on the menu that I have no doubts will definitely appeal to a lot of people because, well, most people love Enoki mushrooms. And even though it would be considered a little pricey, it's still a must-try right?

Well let me save you all the trouble. Don't buy it. And if you do, hope you get a better batch.
I think we may have gotten the bottom of the mushroom barrel on that order.
When I say Enoki mushrooms, I'm thinking long stalks all bunched together and coated nicely with batter and just frying it long enough to get a crisp. As you can see from the picture above, nothing is bunched together and the mushrooms were fried for too long.

And I personally think they look like fried tadpoles.

I love Sayur Asam and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find a good bowl of it nowadays.
The best I've ever had was long ago at Pondok Gurame (when they were still in Katong) but I have to say the Sayur Asam at Ria is actually damn nice.

At least I know where to go if I need my Sayur Asam fix.

And now on to the real food eh.

My darling wife had the 'original' Nasi Ayam Penyet.
And staying true to tradition, it's served with a bowl of plain white rice and not the 'chicken rice' type deal.

Besides that, you also get fried tempeh, cucumber, cabbage and also some blanched kangkong.

And don't forget a nice big dollop of the famous Ria Sambal.
(which is free flow by the way)

As you can see, the chicken is still very tender while having a very nice and crispy exterior. Tasty and not at all dried out.

My darling wife is such a big fan of this place and it's very easy to see why. So far it's never failed to disappoint her and that means that they have a good consistent product which is a very good thing which is tough to come by nowadays especially with food chains that are expanding.

I mean come on, how may times have you gone to a different brand of your favourite makan place and you felt that the food seemed a little bit off-standard compared to your usual haunt?

Well, as usual, you know I've gots to have me some beef.
So I had the Empal Penyet which is basically one big piece of beef which has been fried and smashed (or should I say penyet-ed) for some yummy good times.

And I can safely say the words "big piece of beef" this time and I would be telling the truth.
We all remember the time we had 'Dapur Penyet' right?

Well this was nice and tender and well worth the money I tell you. Super!

And I know I mentioned it just now but I think it's only fair that I speak a little more about the sambal.

Do. Not. Mess. With. This. Sambal.

Okay so maybe you die-hard hantu chili will be able to take it with no issues. I'm actually not too bad myself and this was a really really tasty sambal but after awhile... HELP ME HELP ME MY MOUTH IS ON FIREEEEEEEE okay so maybe I'm exaggerating a little.

My wife keeps pairs it with the sweet soy sauce which they have and she keeps topping it up so you know it's got to be damn good right.

Oh and before I forget to mention... try the Soda Gembira (literally Happy Soda).
It's just Bandung with 7-Up. And it rocks.

And I know I said my darling wife and I have always gotten 100% satisfaction from Ria everytime we went.
But everytime we went, it was to the Lucky Plaza (4th floor) outlet.

They have another outlet on the 1st floor, one at Bedok Point, one at Far East Plaza and another at Jurong Point. I cannot vouch for all the other outlets I must say. But if they are as good at the Lucky Plaza one then you're gonna have a damn good meal.

Anyway i hadn't had much opportunity to take pictures of the food so I can only present the star of the restaurant - ayam penyet. The ayam penyet is nice and flavourful, topped with fried crumbs with their chilli at the side. Delish!

Their smashed pomfret is also nice to order, though you have to be careful of all the fish bones that comes with eating the dish.

The restaurant's decor is also quite cosy and wasn't very crowded at the time of visit (around 12pm).

Overall i say this is a good place to go for reasonably-priced Malay food!

Service was prompt and pleasing. Ordering were make simplified with a ordering slip with translation into English Language by the side, customers just have to indicate their choice of food quantity in the available small box at end of each food item line.

Though we were considered early for dinner on a Friday night, quite a number of food items were already stroked out on the list, sold out. Nevertheless, our long awaited dish was still available and we went ahead ordering.

After countless of tries on the availability of Gado Gado (Indonesian Salad) from their Boon Lay's outlet, we were always left with disappointment as they were always sold out. Our first order was seen not long after our order was taken into the kitchen. We were elated to see the dish was finally ours.

. The salad consisted a number of ingredients including half boil egg, shredded cabbages, fried tofu, tomato and of course not forgetting the koropok (prawn crackers) that gave additional crunch to the dish. Unlike the Chinese Rojak, this version is happily drenched with the authentic taste of Indonesian Peanut sauce which was both thick and sweet. Overall, this could be better if it comes in a more warmer version.
Cost: $5.90

Es Cendol and Alpukat Jus (Avocado Shake) were a must to accompanied our deep fried meal. Give the Es Cendol a try as it revealed some tastes of Indonesian dessert which includes Jackfruit as part of the drink unlike the usual ones we got from the desserts stall. While the milky green Avocado Shake is another noteworthy item, slurps!

Ayam Tanpa Tulang + Nasi (Boneless Chicken Chunks + Rice) for the lazy person like me who liked to hide away from handling the fried chicken bones.

. Tastes from the meat could tell me that they had done a good marinating job with various herbs and spices. The meal was completed with fried tempeh (fermented soy bean cake), fried beancurd, crunchy golden batter bits, exciting hot chilli sambal, boiled kangkong, fresh cabbage, cucumber and rice.

Ayam Penyet + Nasi (Smashed Fried Chicken + Rice) is the signature's of Ayam Penyet Ria! Literally means "smashed chicken", this legendary quarter portion of chicken was flattened together with its bones yet maintaining its crisp and tasted just as great as the boneless ones. Dipped them into the chilli and enjoy that shockingly hot spice that make your taste buds run wild!

Price was rather reasonable considering the location and amount of food we ordered. It not easy to find Authentic Indonesian food in Orchard area that falls within a comfortable price range and if you are craving for some smashed chicken rice, Ayam Penyet Ria could just fit the bill. However, do remember to "gear" up with bottles/glasses of water before even letting your taste buds come in contact with that chilli padi!

Then I tried their beef ball bee hoon soup. The meat ball was pretty big but there was no beef chunks. More like fish ball or flour ball. The soup was oily and the bee hoon was tough. Disappointing dish.

Gado Gado is like a rojak dish. It was the best of all. It was sweet and slightly spiced. The peanut sauce made the tofu, vegetables, keropok etc very good.

Be warned! The chili is super super spicy! It actually burns! They dont seems to serve plain water as well, so try moderately.

I tried the Ayam Penyet at Ayam Penyet Ria at Lucky Plaza. Be sure to order chicken thigh instead of chicken breast which might be a bit dry. This restaurant is quite interesting. The place is quite simple and no frill looking. First the aunty find you a table, giving you a list to select what to order. I end the meal with a glass of avocado juice which is very thick and not too sweet. Only wish it can be colder.

This is the Signature Ayam Penyet ($7.90), which includes a bowl of rice (not captured in the picture). The chicken has a really very crispy skin and tender chicken meat underneath it, but the portion is a bit too small. It looks huge but quite a bit was bone. It was my maiden Ayam Penyet attempt ... Objectively the taste is good, portion is too small for me (it is definitely filling, since it is fried). But don't think I'll be trying again because fried chicken really isn't my thing and I was really only curious. A little too expensive, in my opinion.

You are warned - The chilli on the side is super spicy! I was again, curious, so I just tried a very small bit of it (less than a 5 cent coin size) and it just torched my tongue immediately when a continuous burning aftertaste from the tip of my tongue to the base of my throat. Not an exaggeration at all. I stayed away from that molehill of chilli for the rest of my meal. Curiosity burnt the cat T_T

Service-wise... it was not memorable but in a way, that's good I guess. Minimal waiting time.

There's a 10% discount for employees in offices around Orchard and also for students!

This is the only Indonesian cuisine that I'm familiar with for years, this place gets crowded and noisy during peak meal hours but at least served by efficient and friendly servers makes up it. I ordered Ayam Penyet and Gado Gado.The Gado gado is very appetizing, thick creamy peanut sauce coating all the vegetables and toufus topped with lots of crackers. This is the only Indonesian cuisine that I'm familiar with for years, this place gets crowded and noisy during peak meal hours but at least served by efficient and friendly servers makes up it. I ordered Ayam Penyet and Gado Gado.

The Gado gado is very appetizing, thick creamy peanut sauce coating all the vegetables and toufus topped with lots of crackers. Great finger food snack!

Crispy and flavourful smashed fried chicken (I like the crunchy crumbs! And I’m happy whenever there is lots) with fried fermented bean and toufu , tastes great when you dip into the chilli , please take caution that this chilli is very spicy and lingers on despite drinking lots of water.
