We had a 4 Course Set Dinner at Black Earth, with the following menu: 1) Soup of the DayThis was meant to be pumpkin soup, as told by the serving staff. However, strangely, we couldnt trace any evidence of pumpkin..After a few spoonful, it striked me that the soup actually tasted like curry! But I'm not complaining here, because the soup tasted rather nice, coupled with the freshly baked garlic bread.Main course: Sirloin Steak with Salsa served with Honey Mustard SauceThe chef was rather generous in the serving, accompanied with lotza vegetable and potato. The beef itself was chewy and tender, rather worthwhile!Main course : Poached Chicken Roulade with Mushroom served with Mango Sauce This was actually chicken sausage, erm.. which was hidden by the vegetable and garnishes on top. This was passable to me, since I am no fans of sausages.Ice cream + coffee/teaOverall, I think the food is value for money and the service is good with friendly staff =)To read more and vist photos, please visit http://fun-hideout.blogspot.sg/2010/08/black-earth.html 繼續閱讀

The evening meal was exactly the same as lunch, meaning a similarly tangled jumble of temperatures and flavours; the warm vegetables and strip of char-grilled marinated sirloin are topped with chilled pickles and drenched with cold black peppercorn sauce. As with the other mains, every bite contained different degrees of sweet, salty, sour and spicy; and it doesn’t help that the sirloin, toughened by the splash of cold dressing, was already dry to begin with. The only impression made by the pan-seared salmon flavoured with lemongrass in a lime cream sauce is that it looked and tasted just like the lunchtime snapper, except this time it had donned a tart cream sauce as a rather gauche piece of eveningwear. The wines ($8-$10 per glass) are served over-chilled; the desserts are uninspiring and appear thrown-together (strawberries with fresh cream, dates with yoghurt, or fresh mango with ice cream, $6-$7.50).Despite having piled too much on their plates, promise still lurks somewhere within the gastronomic confusion of Black Earth. If they choose to moderate their menu a tad, we’re sure their creative juices would be allowed to flow a little more freely 繼續閱讀

Black Earth was so new at the point of visit that it didn’t even have a signboard yet. Nor was there any NETS/credit facility, a big no-no since there’s only plastics and zilch cash on us. Amazingly, Roy (I’m guessing he’s the manager) welcomed us warmly and his “just come in and try the food, don’t worry about the money!” had me admiring his trusting nature and lack of concern for the bottom line. It’s easy to overlook Black Earth since there’s only a small blackboard positioned near the entrance to draw your attention to the attractively priced 3 course set dinner which ranges from $16++ to $22++. Great since it was already after 9pm and we just wanted a quick fix dinner.I can only remember that the poached snapper fillet ($18++) was overcooked and the ginger lime sauce too oily. But hungry people can’t afford to be choosy. The poached chicken roulade ($16++) and mushrooms were bland but saved by the refreshing mango sauce.I barely touched the coffee cake, mainly cuz of the cream that’s obviously from a spray can. That really ruined it for me.At this sort of pricing, the food is decent, of average quality and good value. So why not give Black Earth a chance instead of joining the queue at nearby Astons, fellow easties? At the very least, you will be rewarded with nice ambience, unhurried service and lovely presentation for your food! Which is more than what I can say for Astons, really.P.S. We really left without paying a single cent and I did a fund transfer to Roy days later. How cool is that haha.If interested, you are welcome to drop by www.myfoodsirens.wordpress.com for more reviews/photos! =) 繼續閱讀
