Chanced upon Bloomsbury Bakers when I was searching for food places near Boon Keng. Since I was alone for lunch, I decided to go and check out this quaint little cafe in the midst of HDB blocks and industrial estate. Anyway, the cafe was not too hard to find, very near to the bendemeer market. It just that if I had not known the cafe beforehand, I would probably not expect one in this area, kind of out of place? Red Velvet Cake - $5I dunno how you choose which item to buy when faced with a wide selection of pretty cakes and tarts. But for me, I will choose one that seems to be more popular, i.e. item which seems to sell out faster lor. KekeAnd so red velvet cake, it shall be!I really like the red velvet cake here which had more cake and less cream cheese. It was also moist and soft, unlike some other places which made me gasping for water if I ate the cake too fast. The coconut shaving is optional but I thought it added extra flavour to the otherwise similar taste. Anyway it was so good that I accidentally finished it, and ended up I cant finish my duck rice which was suppose to be my lunch. I had been thinking if I wanted to visit Bloomsbury Bakers, fractions of hesitation because it is a cafe situated in a HDB block. Then I saw photographs of the vintage black-white tiled floors and lovely decor leaning heavily on French flavors, and made up my mind instantly. I just love the sleek furnishing - dark toned, mirrored and mysterious all in one. With settings like that, who could still remember they are in a cafe hidden in a neighborhood estate? So here are the reviews on some pastries:The Lemon Meringue Tart (SGD$5.00) had a lovely crust - golden, crunchy and yet subtly sweet, balancing the sweet- sour lemon curd very well. The lemon curd was in turn gossamer smooth, hittng just the right note of tart, giving it a refreshing hint. Again, the word "fresh" came to mind.Next, our Lychee Martini Cake (SGD$7.50) was served - the cake was so pretty, especially with the tiny rose bud sitting atop the cream. The cake was light, almost cottony, with sweet cream and real lychee flesh tucked between layers of this fluffy light cake. While the sweet flavor of lychee was distinctive, the slosh of martini was gentle - I enjoyed this. Finally, the third shared pastry of Sea Salt Caramel Brownies (SGD$4.50) - we chose the one with nuts. At first bite, we enjoyed the rich darkness of the smooth chocolatey slab, paired with the lovely taste and texture of walnuts. Even the caramel sauce was not overly sweet - something that changed my mind about the usual too-sweet flavor. Then we started biting into large grains of sea salt, and it was scaldingly salty - no joke. After three dainty bites each, we left the brownie alone because the saltiness was too much to bear, and eventually obliterated all the other lovely flavors. For full review and more photos, please feel free to visit:http://thearcticstar.blogspot.sg/2014/10/tea-time-at-bloomsbury-bakers-cafe-boon.html查看更多

For the full review and more photos, please visit http://makanarts.com/2014/04/20/bloomsbury-bakers-block-30-bendemeer-road/Two classmates, Ng Hui Yi and Ann Chong studied at Le Cordon Bleu in London, which is located in Bloomsbury Square. That is how the name of the shop, Bloomsbury Bakers, came about. Situated in Bendemeer, this place is only a 5 minute walk away from Boon Keng MRT.The menu here is simple. Cakes are their specialty here, with a small selection of drinks. The Lychee Martini Cake ($7) are not for the faint-hearted here as it tasted rather heavy and the lychee bits between the layers of the lychee cake is covered in martini. When compared to Pine Garden’s Cake (the only other place to serve Lychee Martini Cake), Pine Garden’s will fare better as it is more wallet-friendly and the taste of the martini is more distinct and even throughout the lychee bits.Despite being located in a relatively aged estate, it is able to even attract aged people as there are old people patronizing the shop every now and then. If you are around the Bendemeer / Boon Keng area, this place is also a quiet area to visit and relax.查看更多
