I was craving for French food and I decided to come to Brasserie Gavroche for dinner one evening. Walking down Tras Street, you'd probably miss this eatery because of the lack of obvious signage. When we entered we were shown to our tables very promptly. Service, needless to say, was excellent. We started off with the bone marrow on toasted Poilane bread with garlic confit ($19). This was Chef Frédéric Colin's grandfather's recipe (one of many actually) and it was super delicious. Loved the bone marrow and garlic confit combo - I think I could've easily polished off two plates of these! The French onion soup ($15) was another thing we had to share. Unfortunately, their version is disappointing. I've had better elsewhere (Au Chocolat & Antoinette to be exact). The soup lacked punch and wasn't flavourful enough. By the way, this is also another of Chef's grandfather's recipes. My boyfriend ordered the pan-roasted Angus sirloin with Béarnaise sauce and French fries ($48). It may look plain and ordinary but this was really phenomenal. Without any sauce, it was still great. My main course for the evening: Grandpa Henri’s fish quenelle with crayfish sauce ($35). Served with bechamel sauce and prawns, the little white dumpling-like things are actually made of fish meat. This dish was quite nice as well, but it was really a little too gelad for me (the bechamel sauce must be to blame, although it was nice - not saying it wasn't)Finally, dessert. We had the vanilla mille-feuille and wild strawberry sorbet ($14). This was the best mille-feuille I'd ever tasted. No competition here. The strawberry ice cream was SUPER well done too. Overall, I had a lovely time at Brasserie Gavroche. However, I think this is good enough for a one-time experience and I think my wallet feels the same as well. Total damage (plus 2 glasses of wine): $181.

Great food and atmosphere, crowded, noisy and relaxed. So relaxed in fact that the table behind us managed to smash two of their plates at the same time. Fish was really well prepared and the wine suggestions were well balanced without breaking the wallet. No room left for desert but it looked very tempting.A great meal and both I and my friend have been back since.
