I particularly like the revamped Marina Square with the inclusion of The Dining Edition which is a new dining concept that puts together different cuisine from around the world under one roof. From Viet, Thai, Chinese, Japanese to Brazilian restaurants as well as a few new dessert bars and familiar cafes, we are definitely in for a treat when shopping at Marina Square.

The husband and I decided on lunch at Carnivore Appetite as a belated wedding anniversary celebration which probably wasn’t the best move because lunch was buffet-style and we still weren’t in top form after being ill for some time. Though we didn’t manage to eat a lot (which wasn’t a bad thing – at least we weren’t eating more than we should!), we enjoyed the dining experience as it was our first time indulging in grilled meats at a churrascaria in Singapore. He was craving for beef and I was craving for lamb so why not, really.

The selection of grilled meats is not huge for lunch but is accompanied with an extensive offering of salads, appetisers and hot dishes.

The difference in concept between Carnivore Appetite and its predecessor, Carnivore is that there is no rodizio style of service in the former, meaning there are no service staff coming round to your table to carve meats directly onto your plate. Instead, we see meats on skewers gently roasting in this giant charcoal rotisserie in the middle of the buffet line where you can go to for all your meats.

I started my meal with some greens dressed in balsamic vinaigrette from the salad bar. Love the rucola, alfalfa sprouts, baby carrots and ultra-sweet cherry tomatoes.

An assortment of antipasti and pre-made salads

And from the hot food section, we had the spicy sausage (very meaty and heavy!), grilled pineapples, pork collar, bacon wrapped chicken, honey baked ham, mashed potato and creamy polenta. The pork was unfortunately too dry for my liking. Same goes for the chicken wrapped within the bacon. I love grilled pineapples with meats but this pineapple just wasn’t sweet and juicy enough. The ham was just a standard one. I was impressed with the mashed potato and polenta though. Both were creamy, well flavoured and not over the top.

There were also the Feijoada (Brazilian black bean stew), soups, spaghetti, rice which I didn’t try.

The highlight of my meal had got to be the meats. Only 4 selections were available for lunch i.e. chicken thigh, escolar fillet (a.k.a. butter fish), beef rump and lamb shoulder with garlic and mint. Just let the passador know what you want and he will carve the meats onto your plate.

The lamb was my favourite – absolutely not gamey at all and was grilled to perfection with a nice pinkish centre in the middle. Also, it came with a nice layer of fats that made the meat tasted really tender but I got so sick of it later on that I just had to remove the fats and eat the meat alone. The lamb went very well with the mushroom sauce.

The escolar fillet was my next preferred and I drizzled it with pineapple sauce and chimichurri to take away any sickly greasy feeling from the supposedly very oily fish. The restaurant had advised diners to limit escolar intake to not more than 3 pieces. I was curious about this because it really wasn’t as oily as I thought it would be so I checked up wikipedia and realised that escolar has a high oil content of 14%-25% as well as high wax ester content that can cause keriorrhea (or gempylid fish poisoning). Keriorrhea is similar to diarrhoea and other symptoms would include stomach cramps, headaches, nausea, vomiting and anal leakage that may occur within 30 minutes to 36 hours after consumption. True enough, I only had two pieces but I started having diarrhoea after my meal as well as nausea for the next couple of days so people with weak stomachs like me, you have been warned.

The beef rump wasn’t too bad either except that the exterior where it was more well done was chewy than the centre part. The beef went very well with the port wine sauce.

The chicken was lacklustre though. Tasted dry and bland so I had to drizzle more sauce over to make it more palatable.

I couldn’t resist another serving of lamb and escolar (this was my 2nd piece). The lamb got me hooked.

At $29.90 for a weekday dinner, this is quite a steal! though i would say that the meat could have been better, but for this price, i'd still say it was worth a try (: salad bars are always one of my first stops at a buffet! LOVE all the colours, and i really liked how they provided pretty interesting veggie varieties that aren't usually available in other salad bars e.g. alfalfa sprouts and beetroot! (not that i really like beetroot, but the colour is loveee) the seafood section was pretty smal

the seafood section was pretty small, and i suggest skipping it because i felt it wasn't very fresh.

to be honest, the variety for the grilled options was a tad disappointing. while i didn't expect it to be as extensive as the original Carnivore restaurants, but having only four meats to choose from was rather sad

there were other cooked dishes as well, and we particularly liked the braised beef! it was pretty tender and tasty


probably one of our most interesting discoveries was two adorable bottles of condiments, which served a purpose that was more practical than expected. each containing special ingredients to counter excess salt or grease, all you have to do is drizzle some onto the meat and voila, it fits to your desired tolerance level ;)

dessert was again a disappointing section with just ice cream and a bunch of cakes. i guess i can't complain because i didn't really expect there to be a dessert section in the first place! and we were already quite full by then anyway


Overall, i feel that having reasonable expectations for this buffet helps! it is definitely one of the more affordable ones around (especially when compared to its predecessor), and this is reflected in the variety that you get. we were still VERY full at the end of the buffet though! so shows that you don't need that much food to stuff yourself with ;)

Alas, it was a rainy afternoon and i could not explore their alfresco section.

The fish kebab was not bad. Grilled to perfection and had sweet fragrance of seafood goodness. Do try the chicken kebab (picture 1) too. There are also lamb and beef meat available at the live grilling section. This is the only area whereby a chef is always present to serve you your desired food order.

Personally did not enjoy the topshell (picture 2). But then again, taste is to the individual.

There is a huge salad bar section right next to the entrance (picture 3). if you are into greens, you should enjoy yourself here.

Service staff were generally helpful and polite.

For the interior decoration, i actually quite liked it. It was rather spacious and furniture used were colourful. Gives a lively feel to the entire place, in contrast to the cold cold weather outside.

There is a bar at the back of the restaurant (picture 4), which is also next to the doorway to their alfresco seating area.

The spread is actually quite decent. There's almost every kind of meat available and there's a live grilling station where the chef will cut you the meat on the spot. You can then complement the meat with the six different sauces available - I recommend the Pineapple Sauce and Port Wine Sauce if you're looking for different and delicious.

The food does get restocked regularly so there's always food, although this could also be because there weren't many people dining when I visited. There's a salad bar and I couldn't get my hands off the Prawn Cocktail (downside: there were too few prawns!). Mushroom Soup is available and some other must-try dishes include the roasted, well-seasoned potatoes and juicy sausages.

I was disappointed that there weren't any desserts available, but then again with the price I shouldn't complain. Overall, the meat was tender and tasty. With so much meat available, I only managed two rounds of food. Maybe next time, I should come with an empty stomach.

This newly opened restaurant in Marina Square is a buffet place known for its grilled meats. The salad bar is not bad with its limited range. There only one soup available today which is mushroom soup. There is 2 types of rice dishes: garlic rice and seafood rice. The seafood in the rice do not taste fresh. The grilled salmon is quite dry and tasteless. There is also order to make pasta dishes available should one does not take to the grilled meats.

When I went there on the opening day, there were quite a few choices from lamb, chicken, to beef. There's more than just meats here, they also have a salad bar where you can mix and match different ingredients to suit your palate. Go further and you will see other choices. I especially liked the caramelised pineapple which I think was roasted for a few minutes. Oh and you also have to try the meaty sausage there... So good....

Desserts were apleanty, but I couldn't eat anymore. I was so full from all the savourty items.
