Lemon Drizzle Loaf Cake (S$5.20)

The cake was heated when served. It was soft and not too sweet or sour.

Merry Trio Latte
(S$7)

Vanilla, Hazelnut, Caramel
I had the iced version, which was served in a jar. Refreshing drink but could not really taste the distinct flavours in it.

There was free wifi in the cafe. I was sitting at a table by the wall, which had a row of power points. There was a note paste on top which allowed customers to use the power point but limited to 15 minutes.

my daughter made the arrangements & we managed to find time to go for a 4pax family coffee/snacks at carpenter & cook this afternoon on 1.4.2015.^^ excellent outing this! wonderful food & ambience.

there were price tags on the quaint collections (i spied an old typewriter at S$800!) which included some enamel floral painted plates on the wall, tables & chairs etc.

hence carpenter – we were told by the proprietress shenn, who is a pastry chef who pulls the weights for the other part of the name – cook. ^^

banoffee pie was excellent! there was a coffee infused top. shenn said it was rare. the toffee was freshly made, very mildly sweet & excellent flavours (different form what i learned for the internet boiling a can of condensed milk in water for 3 hrs).

well, shenn told us her bakery was just downstairs at the same premises & all the pastries were own freshly baked & not from a common supplier. ^^

my own banoffee pie was not too bad but this was of course better.

lemon tart was very nice also. very mildly sweet (which we liked) & nicely tangy, & a nice crisp tart base.

both my daughter & i wanted to try the quiche. we picked the bacon quiche. i thought it was really savoury & nice. we all liked it. i tried a mini quiche previously, not too great, maybe i may try it again.

the flat white was smooth & silky, micro foam well blended, & great flavours. it didn’t have the latte art of assembly coffee. well i guess no latte art at all.

taste wise, it was as good as dutch colony & assembly coffee. maybe chye seng huat was better, couldn’t really remember. it was good anyway.

I have to say I adore their whimsical Elizabethan theme of floral teasets, wooden tables, all things vintage and rustic kitchenware. It reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, and not being in puffy frocks made me feel quite out of place. The grey hues cast across the cafe by the rainy weather contrasted with the warm glows from the lighting made the cafe a fantastic hideout from the rest of the world. I can already foresee myself coming here, equipped with a good read in hand.

The glob sister and I at this cafe, finally. We've been wanting to go since forever... and almost put it off yet again because of the rain. But procrastination has to stop. You bet we didn't regret going forth with plans we've previously agreed upon with such a lovely setting.

The Ham & Cheese Croissant is seemingly predictably good as this is already a winning combination. The croissant blew me away quite a bit as it exceeded my expectations. The croissant had an extraordinarily buttery fragrance melded with the savoury cheese and bacon that are really chewy. The croissant were also finely layered in fettered crisps when the knife goes through. Definitely better than average... I would recommend this, but first of all you can't leave C&C without trying their tarts.

As our stomachs have limited space and cafe budgets, each of us chose only one tart. C&C tarts go at $6.50 each. This is one of the toughest decisions in a while. Finally, glob sister chose the Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Tart while I went with the Passionfruit Meringue Tart. The decisions were weighed with different priorities in mind: for her, it was chocolate; me, photogenicity of the food (uh, duh). I would have chosen the Lemon Cream Tart based on my imagination of how they taste, but it was sadly pretty ugly-looking with this squishy yellow paste on the tart structure. Back to our orders: the Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Tart turned out to be pretty interesting in that each of its components are unmistakable and distinct, especially the saltiness. The dark chocolate aftertaste came on fast and furious thereafter, but it's not too imposing nor sore-throat inducing. On the other hand, my Passionfruit Meringue Tart was spectacular in that it tastes as awesome as it looks. I often don't have much faith in good-looking food but this proved me wrong. The meringue is actually quite soft and not too sweet, and complemented the sour tones of the passionfruit (which looked like the lemon cream tart) stuffed generously under the meringue soft spikes. I really liked it! I wonder what the Lemon Cream Tart would taste like.

The hot mocha didn't impress me as much as the tarts did, though I must say the caffeine kick is very substantial. To me, the mocha felt neither here nor there, resting in a comfortable range of a decent, smooth, predictably good coffee. I enjoyed it even though I'm sure people who are picky about their coffees may not rank C&C with the really good coffee-driven cafes. I definitely loved the experience here at Carpenter & Cook, and a second visit is in order.

They should have the in house dinning for the one near upper thomson! Then it will be of so much convenience!

However, I do like the oven baked Mushroom Quiche, which comes in salad side too! If you are looking for something more filling, you can either go for quiches or sandwiches.

I tried out the banoffee flavour and as always, their tarts always leave me a happy person.

Verdict? Go for the sweets at Carpenter's and Cook. That is what they are best at.

One thing that I was pretty relieved about, its service was in no way compromised despite its popularity and besides being warmly greeted by their crew, they were also patient enough to slowly intro us their desserts and took the effort to understand what kind of flavours we were looking for.

This signature was what brought us here, reminding me of the really good one I’ve had at Sydney’s Bourke Street Bakery.

Passion Fruit Meringue Tart - S$6.50/-

I’m a fan of passion fruit and this certainly managed to make the cut! Slightly tangy for that refreshing touch, it’s well-balanced by the sweetness soft beaten meringue. We loved how it was neither too sweet nor nose-cringing sour, managing to hit the fine balance. Coupled with a decent tart base, it certainly managed to satisfy our palates!

Banoffee Tart- S$6.50/-

Recommended by their friendly staff, this is a combination of banana and chocolate, topped with espresso powder. This was quite an acquired taste for me, with a slight bitterness from the banana and very subtle chocolate. I would have preferred a sweeter one, perhaps with caramelized banana though this might probably appeal to those with not-so-sweet tooth.

Lemon Drizzle Loaf Cake - S$5/-

Another one on the recommended list, we loved slightly sweet icing with a refreshing lemon taste to go with the butter cake. It tasted like those pound cakes that were on the denser side, yet light enough to not feel jelat. Best finishing touch was that it was heated up right before serving so that the layer of icing was slightly melted yet having a top crust after a while of cooling.

Apple Cobbler Loaf Cake - S$5/-
This seemed pretty appetizing though we thought it was the only disappointing piece. Stronger flavour of butter cake with just a subtle hint of apple in it, we found it too dry and dense for our liking.

Perfect for some high-tea, we loved how the desserts were nicely done and managed to satisfy our palates. Cosy ambience decorated with a compilation of vintage items, it reminded us the likes of Dong Po Colonial Cafe and Folks Collective, bringing back the touch of nostalgia.

The Passionfruit Tart might be one of their most raved desserts, but we got the Lemon Tart ($6.50) to suit our not-so-adventurous tastebuds. For those who loves a tinge of sweetness in their tarts, this may be a tad sour for its lack of meringue. I loved the tangy flavour however, which was pretty tart yet refreshing at the same time. The tart base was firm to hold its structure but not too hard to cut at the same time.

I don’t remember seeing the Banoffee Tart ($6.50) in my previous visit, so probably this is one of their more recent creations. The top of the tart was a cream layer with cocoa powder coated on the top, while nearing the base was the caramalised bananas and toffee. The bottom was sweet, while the top had a rather neutral flavour. We were not sure if the cream was supposed to even out the sweetness from underneath, but the taste just did not seem to come together nicely.

Having tried two tarts, we decided to get a Lavender Bundt Cake ($4.00) . While a Bundt Cake was supposed to be similar to a pound cake in terms of texture, this was slightly too moist and clumpy that it felt rather similar to a muffin instead. The taste however was a saving factor as it was light and aromatic, therefore creating a flavour that one would not get sick of so easily.

The Flat White ($5.00) was rather decent, with a earthy aroma at the end. Definitely suits the tastebuds for those who dislike acidic-tasting blends.

I was greeted with the vintage entrance of the cafe - a wooden bench and a set of wooden desk and uneven chairs.

I was there at about teatime and the small cafe was crowded, and there wasn't seats for us. Waited for like 10 mins before we could grab a seat.
The service crew was pretty efficient, the tables are being cleared almost immediately after the customer leave.
We had to share this long table with the others and the chair provided was just horrible. The cushion of the chairs were kind of spoilt, like you could literally feel your butt sitting on the wooden plank inside the chair. Or was this how a vintage chair was supposed to feel like? The seat was just uncomfortable..

What did pleased me was the vintage clocks and wok and cutleries. hanging on the walls of the cafe.

Do note that most of the vintage items that you see in this cafe can be bought. & they arent cheap too. I saw this wall clock being sold at $250. It's pretty reasonable for a piece of vintage, but I'm sure you are able to get it at a cheaper price somewhere else. Anyway, this cafe is for you to enjoy some food.

Not forgetting the tiles on the floor near the entrance. We hardly see such tiles around now. Small little decoration in the cafe created a wonderful setting which was appealing to the eyes.

Went over to the counter and saw the array of food choice that they have. From tarts, to muffins, to quiche and even sandwiches.

Being a fan of sour stuffs (fyi, i like to eat lemon pulps), the Lemon Tart was my cup of tea. It wasnt that that sour, there's this sweetness in the cream which goes really well with the sourness. What i fancy more is the Tart shell! Tho it was slightly hard and we had a hard time cutting it with a knife, but the tart was not bland with the correct level of sweetness.

Another of their more famous tart is this Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate Tart! This tart indeed up to its standard! Sea salt and chocolate can never go wrong. But it was quite different from the Lemon Tart. The lemon tart is more to the moist side due to the cream, but this Caramel Tart was filled with rich chocolate and a sprinkle of sea salt! Correct choice of tart!

The latte was a disappointment. At first i asked for Mocha, and was shocked that they dont serve mocha. I mean how can they not have mocha!
And no, i wont order latte again from Carpenter and Cook.

In a nutshell, Carpenter and Cook definitely score in terms of its ambience and the tarts that they have, i heard that their Meringue Tart in great too. But as for coffee, i would not recommend it.

I would come back again one day

Double Chocolate Muffin is sweet & a little dry on the crown. Prefers Famous Amous's muffin!

A nice place for chilling out but nothing much to rave about the food.

Carpenter and Cook is a quaint little cafe/restaurant located in Bukit Timah hidden behind shophouses but that hasn't kept them from being rather well known and gaining a good reputation. The prices for the dishes are rather steep in my opinion, so the question is can they justify the higher prices with great taste? Turns out they can! While the quiche is actually quite small in portion, the taste is really amazing and delicious! It really makes you want to come back for with their excellent combination of ingredients and it was really well baked. The ham sandiwich was decent as well although it was really quite average. The quiche really made my day so if you're willing to fork out a little more cash, do give Carpenter and Cook's amazing quiche a try!

Yes, almost everything you see in the shop can be brought at a price. Definitely a unique concept going for them and with freshly baked pastries and breads everyday by Chef Shenn Sim who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu (London), you can be assured of a fine tea party at this place, with the matching decor and quirky furniture to boot.

We arrived at 1pm and were pleased to find many seats available. There is no food menu at this place as the daily offerings are what is on display on the pretty vintage flowery cake stands and matching rustic looking platters. And since they had only opened at 12pm, there was unfortunately not much out of the kitchen yet. The nice server informed us that more would be coming out later in the day.

So we settled on a few delectable looking items available first and waited patiently for more pastries or tarts to come out from the kitchen.

The first we tried was the Fruit Scone $4, served with clotted cream and jam. Very pretty looking and the perfect scone shape. Spreading a large dollop of cream and jam onto a half of the scone, we each took a large bite with much anticipation. To our dismay, the scone was a tad too hard and not as fluffy as we had hoped.

The Vegetarian Quiche $7 came highly recommended by the ladies at the counter and it did not disappoint. For one, I had already fallen in love with the beautiful flower-patterned china plate the quiche and side salad was plated on. The open-faced pastry crust of the quiche was nicely crisp and buttery, while the filling of cheese, onions, mushrooms and roasted tomatoes made a very tasty savory baked custard that complimented the crust very well.

We chose the Meat Brioche $6.50 because it caught our eye with the strips of bacon intertwined with the sliced mushrooms and melted cheese atop what looked to be a fluffy brioche bed. Alas, this did not taste as good as it looked. It was bland and flat and overall not very impressionable at all.

While our intention was to come in for brunch, my advice would be to come in for afternoon tea instead as the pastries and servings were small and has quite a price tag attached to it. It was definitely a fun afternoon hanging out in the shop, being surrounded by all the old school clocks, antique china and whimsical decor, sipping tea out of floral teacups. It's almost like stepping into a different world here at C&C and first visits are certainly recommended for the experience though I would not be too sure about a second...

This Lemon Tart that my Boy friend got for me is definitely not for those that does not like soury food at all. Not only is it sweet, it is also extremely sourish(or at least for me).Pros and cons. Sour would wet your appetite more but too sour can also kill your mood for more food i guess. They also have this brownie which you can literally taste bits of sugar in the cake and honestly, not for the faint hearted. You really need to be a die hard sweet tooth to like all these sugary pastry.Like I

Like I say, if you are not a sweet tooth, the pastries they sell will really not to your liking.
