This kooky little cafe tucked away in the Upper Bukit Timah neighbourhood of Lorong Kilat is certainly no stranger to being reviewed. This kooky little cafe tucked away in the Upper Bukit Timah neighbourhood of Lorong Kilat is certainly no stranger to being reviewed. When we got to Carpenter & Cook one Sunday afternoon, we were greeted simultaneously by the chatter of diners, the clinking of cutlery and the aroma of oven-baked goodies the moment we pushed through the wood-panelled door. As we waited in line for a seat, the couple next to us used a vintage display cabinet as a tabletop for filling in a form to have their pre-wedding shoot held here.

As with all wildly popular eateries, there's always a presumption that service will be brusque and impersonal. I'm happy to report that the servers we encountered at Carpenter & Cook were welcoming and chirpy. Furnished with rustic pieces acquired by one of its three co-owners from all over the world, the cafe exuded a homely and laid-back vibe in spite of the teatime crowd. Communal seating is practised here, which is fine by me since I've recently been trained not to attack openly affectionate couples.

Lavender Bundt Cake, $4.00 - Whilst surveying the pastries on display, we were a little taken aback by how steep the prices were. It took just four bites to finish this palm-sized bundt cake (we're talking preschooler hands here), which tasted quite uninspiring. It was my first encounter with lavender in cake form, though apart from some notes of cinnamon I frankly couldn't detect anything else in the cake. I also felt the honey glaze was superfluous since it added neither depth of flavor nor moisture to the cake, which was a little too dry.

Passionfruit Meringue Tart, $6.50 - Highly raved about in almost every review of Carpenter & Cook I've read, this tart had a crisp, buttery shell that broke off easily when you cut into it with a fork. The beautifully seared meringue peaks had a texture akin to toasted marshmallow innards... that's actually meant to be much more delicious than it reads. Found the passionfruit curd way too sweet, but supporters swear by it so if too much sugar's your thing, go right ahead and order this.

Smashing Savoury Brioche Bun (Veg.), $6.50 - A sprinkle of sundried tomatoes, pine nuts, olives and a couple sprigs of parsley on a fluffy brioche bun. I have to say the bun was moist, soft and wonderfully herby, but for six friggin' fifty? I wouldn't have ordered this if I were allowed to have things my own tyrannical way.

Triple chocolate chip muffin, $3.50 - This was a flat out disaster. The muffin was so dry that every poke of the fork triggered an avalanche of crumbs. Also, the chocolate used was sickeningly sweet and of exceedingly poor quality - I say this as someone who has no qualms about eating Van Houten chocolates by the boxful.

Flat White, $5.00 - Like any Singaporean cafe worth their salt, Carpenter & Cook utilises the Speakeasy blend from Liberty Coffee. Sadly, premium beans alone do not a good cup of coffee make. My flat white was served lukewarm, left a slightly acrid aftertaste, and came with zero art boohoohoo. Maybe it was because the cafe was crowded when we visited, but they could definitely pay a little more attention to detail for drink prep.

By the end of our visit we were left scratching our heads about the hype surrounding Carpenter & Cook. It's obvious that they have the leisurely come-burn-your-weekend-afternoon-with-us ambiance bit down pat, but food and price wise there's so much room for improvement you could fit Mariah Carey and her entourage in there. I'd like to think that we visited on an off-day. I guess I wouldn't mind coming back if I happen to be in the area, though it'll be an uphill task convincing me to go out of my way to visit Carpenter & Cook a second time.

What’s safe about this cafe, after making such a long-ass trip to Upper (Ulu) Bukit Timah for a brunch / tea here, is that all its items are at least of a passable standard. They are entirely made and produced in-house for its freshness. Of the 5 pastries I had, the Chocolate Chip Scone, Almond Croissant and Valrhona Sea Salt Caramel Tart are to-orders. I heard their Quiche isn’t too bad as well, if you’re looking for a heartier meal.

(Look at those plates, damn it. Those plates are for ‘hires’ for photoshoots.)

No those fingers are surely not mine.
I’m telling you, that Fresh Mint Tea might seem the most bland and unassuming hot beverage ever, but boy is it rejuvenating, with it almost feeling restorative. Definitely one to go with the sweets. The most charming amongst the liquids (I’m referring to the creepy but adorable heart shape-faced smiley) however, tasted the most ordinary. I didn’t quite like (and it’s just about the thing I didn’t like at Carpenter and Cook) how the chocolate tasted artificial.

No GST and Service Charge here. Also here, you place your order at the counter, take a seat with the pastries and wait to be served with the drinks. Reservations are taken for groups of 6 and above on a weekday, while they only entertain walk-ins on a weekend. Parking can be a chore here though. But without a car, it’s kind of a pain to get here. So, you make the call.

I have to say that i felt a slight tinge of disappointment when i first stepped into this place because it didnt look as pretty as i’d imagined, but their food display…was mind-blowing
gosh, having to decide on all those lovely pastries, tarts and cakes on display was so difficult!

first up was the queen of hearts tart ($6.20). a luscious almond cream tart with a deliciously crisp buttery crust with lovely berries inside! they use the freshest seasonal fruits available, and the berries added such a delicious zesty flavour to it!

the pear almond eat me cake ($5) was a soft buttery pound cake filled with pears and frangipani
loved how fluffy it was!

had a really yummy sandwich but i can’t remember what it was called!
the bun was super duper fluffy! and slightly sweet as well, which went perfectly with the ham and cheese inside ^^

We tried two quiches!
have i mentioned how i love pies/tarts because of their crust?
it’s so yummy and flaky and crispy! yummmz
they’re $7 each. the peperoni quiche had sundried tomatoes in it. surprisingly actually preferred the spinach quiche.it was sooo delicious and eggy! haha. and i liked how the taste of the spinach didnt take centrestage, but rather complemented the other ingredients rather well. Definitely would like to go back here again! ^^

Amazing Quiche $7 A savoury pastry crust with fillings that absolutely could not be missed! There were 2 variations available that day and we ordered the bacon quiche. Served warm, savour it slowly with the salad at the side. The dressings of the greens gave it slight taste and further enhanced the flavour of the quiche when you pair them up together. Oh so yummy!

Lemon Drizzle Loaf $5 I really love the sweet and tangy flavour of the lemon which was yet not overwhelming. The cake had a dense and moist texture and was slightly spongy.

Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel $6.50 The sweetness of the smooth and creamy chocolate complemented well with the salty flavour of the sea salt. The caramel taste was subtle which I loved because I am not a fan of anything caramel. The light flavour of the tart was a great combination with the strong flavour of the chocolate. The tart was flaky yet it could hold well and did not break easily. Iced Mocha $6.50 It tasted bland and diluted. Thankfully, the desserts were really good so they managed to compensate for the lack of quality in the coffee. I would not be ordering their iced coffees again but I would probably give their hot coffees a chance.

Refreshing fruit tart topped with sweet 'flamed' meringue is a delightful sight and a delectable taste.

Sweet and tangy raspberry bundt is really pleasant to taste.

Carpenter & Cook is one of the few vintage themed cafes in Singapore. My group of friends & I ordered a few of their tarts, drinks and a quiche to share among us. Beneath the chocolate ganache lies a layer of gooey and yummilicious caramel! The Lemon Curd and Passionfruit Meringue tart are the next best ones while the Lemon Drizzle Cake and Frangipane Fruit Tart were quite disappointing. However, different people have different taste buds as one of them likes the Lemon Drizzle Cake! For the Frangipane Fruit Tart, we were all struggling to finish it. The quiche came with a side salad and it was tasty! I am mega disappointed with their coffee though as one would expect good quality coffee to go along with such nice pastries. Anyway, this cafe have a really good ol' vintage feel to it.

I love the decor and each piece of furniture is unique. We actually used this sewing machine which they cleverly transform it into a tabletop! All their cakes and tarts are freshly baked daily and I will surely visit this cafe again most probably to try their carrot cake, scones and savoury items like the brioche bun etc.

Travelling 30 mins via public transport may seem like a short journey to some , but it does seem a tad far for me at times. I have been spoilt badly. Staying near town makes going places like Chua Chu Kang , Woodlands (you know, the far end of our island) seemed like eternity. Comparatively, going to Bukit Timah that day seemed like a piece of cake...quite effortless The company and food were the draw! I was on my way to lunch and coffee with a dear friend. The company and food were the draw! I was on my way to lunch and coffee with a dear friend. I really love the decor of this cafe.. The furniture used are all restored and you are able to purchase them too! You will be smitten by what this cafe has to offer, just like how my friend and I were!

The downside of this place is that it can get very noisy when it is packed. Also, the service staff may appear to be somewhat curt and 'cold' when you ask for food recommendations. We received a rather hostile vibe from her. Plus, it is after all a a cafe cum vintage fitting outfit, so there are not many tables available. You may have to use the big communal table (seems common these days at such cafes) so your heart to heart talk may be overheard by other table mates

But really, you will be won over by the vintage items they have stocked in the shop and those pretty tarts and cakes waiting for you in the display shelves!!

Frangipane Fruit Tart ($6.20)

As pleasing to the eyes, hints of the fruit aroma surfaced from the almond cream tart and this was definitely one of my favorites from the cafe. This crowd did provide a significant enough impression with its pleasant tart notes and we spooned up every bit of it within seconds.

Passionfruit Meringue Tart ($6.20)

An elegant- looking treat that lived up to its expectations, I was so tempted to try it out as personally, I LOVE PASSION FRUITS! Over by the sharp passionfruit curd snuggled within the shortcrust shell. One of the more memorable numbers from Carpenter and Cook, the contrasting textural layers of the pastry comfort.

Savoury Brioche Bun ($6.50)

A gratifyingly soft, squishy home- made bun with slightly crispy edges around the sides, went along fine with the seasonal ingredients that were topped in the centre. For the overall pleasure as derived from it, this is definitely a little too pricey for the serving.

Ham and Cheese Quiche ($7.00)

Notoriously hard to get it right at times. Held together by crumbly buttery pastry crust, the light and fluffy cheesy custard filling was appropriately stuffed with bits of ham. My only complaint would be that it could have been warmed up for a longer period of time since it became chilled a little too quickly.

There’s not alot of seats but 3 communal tables where you will need to share with other people during peak hours and several other tables for 2s . They have quaint furniture and not all the sets of cutlery, plates and cups are the same, which was quite unique!

Mushroom quiche was nice! But there’s onion inside so I’m not such a big fan of it... But the quiche was soft and crispy and I like it! We tried lemon tart as our dessert and it's just quite sour but the crust of the tart was awesome! Free flow of water available near the counter, self service!

This was a winner. Passion fruit Meringue tart. I had lemon meringue tarts before at some famous place, and I had a bad experience thanks to the over sharp lemon taste. This was da bomb! Passion fruit smells very mouthwatering, and has a sweet taste that balance well with its sour part. The tart was crisp and good.

I think I will come back here. To da bao, cos a seat is really difficult to get.

Latte.
With a heart that's meant to be broken.
A chocolate chip cookie that was crumbly with grit and tasting like Famous Amos.

Raspberry topped berrylicious bunt cake.
Soft and delightfully spongy topped with tart berry perserves.
A tad too sweet for me though.

Scones.
Everytime I see it,
I think of those rock buns I used to make at Home Economics classes.
But this buttery crumble speckled with raisins was yum!
Clotted cream and berry preserve.
Phoebe tells us that the preserves change depending what fruits are available.
Whatever the chef decides to churn out from the kitchen

And they also sell their preserves if you fall in love with them.
Just if.

That day they had orange marmalade, fig and pear, mango and passionfruit.
Oh all these flavours just sound amazing.
