I used to think of Chinese traditional desserts as plain sugary soups with (possibly) miserable portions of ingredients (I'm not kidding - have you ever tried red bean or green bean soup that's full of water but so little beans?) until I chanced upon Dessert Hut in Chinatown one day while out shopping with my husband and I have been savouring desserts that I never used to like since then. This is served cold and is extremely refreshing just like a chilled pudding. It is so light and smooth that it just slips down your throat. Don't even need to chew or bite into it. It doesn't taste very eggy even though its main ingredient is supposedly egg. It just reminds me of a Chinese version of custard pudding or creme brulee with sugar syrup. Bring on some caramel! It makes a great dessert on a hot day. These chewy glutinous rice balls are filled with fragrant creamy black sesame. Though the peanuts are cooked soft and tender (and not mushy at all), they still maintain their original form. This is probably my top favourite on their menu. The yam is more liquefied (like a thick creamy soup) as compared to yam paste served in most Chinese restaurants. It is very smooth and I love how you can just slurp it down your throat. The thing I like best is its original flavour - that natural sweetness and fragrance. Surprisingly the black glutinous rice further brings out the flavour of the yam because it's chewy so it lends a different texture to this dessert. Perfect match indeed. With numerous desserts to choose from, I'm sure you can find one you like! 繼續閱讀

After having a hearty meal at Spring Court restaurant, we took a slow walk over to People's Park Centre. We had dessert at "Dessert Hut 甜品小屋". This place seemed to be very popular and had expanded to the shopfront opposite as well. Despite the expanded space, it was still difficult to find a seat as almost all the tables were occupied at 3pm on a weekend. On the other hand, "Tong Shui" cafe, also selling dessert, was rather empty. I am not sure why. Pricing? Taste?Hubby ordered yam with black glutinous rice, something that I would like to have if I were not so full. Although what was served looked very different from that in the menu, it tasted quite good still. Brother and I both ordered Egg Beancurd with Mango. It was quite tasty too.Dad ordered Mango Sago but he put aside all the shaved ice onto another plate. Mum ordered chendol and she was all thumbs up for that. 繼續閱讀

This dessert shop was discovered by chance. The shop took over the shop space directly opposite to use it to park more tables and chairs. I managed to find an empty pretty quickly. I went through the menu and decided to have the black glutinous rice with ice cream for $2.50. The waitress came over to take the order. It was served to my table in a bit. The waitress collected the payment right after. The black glutinous rice tasted surprisingly good. The black glutinous rice was cooked well to give it the right softness to desirable chewiness. The level of sweetness was just right with a rather sight taste of coconut milk. It was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A handful of roasted nuts was sprinkled before served. It was an amazing combination. The coldness of ice cream complemented the sweetness of black glutinous rice rather well. The crispiness of roasted nuts enhanced its texture further. This is easily the best black glutinous rice dessert that i ever eaten. I will definitely be back for more desserts. 繼續閱讀

Came here on a hot afternoon for dessert!I've been here a few times over the last few years, but NOT once have I seen this place not crowded. It's always packed full of people, with many customers just standing around waiting for the next available seat. Fortunately the turn-over rate is also quite fast, I never had to queue over 10 minutes. (You can also expect to share tables with others.)The service is really commendable - they work at lightning speed. The desserts usually arrive within a minute or two after ordering. I suggest that if you want a particular dessert which is popular on the menu, go there earlier because once it's sold out, they won't prepare another batch for that day.Orders for the day:1) Black Glutinous Rice2) Bubur Cha Cha3) Almond with Sesame Cream4) Tangyuan with Almond Cream5) EggcurdEggcurd for me.The liquid surrounding the entire eggcurd tasted like sweet syrup. I didn't like it because it was overwhelmingly sweet, not to mention it came at too much a quantity if the entire eggcurd was swimming in it! I couldn't distinguish any taste in my dessert because the sweetness covered over everything. To be fair, I've never been disappointed in their desserts before. In fact, I love most of their desserts, except the eggcurd! Everybody else at the table seemed really satisfied with their desserts too, finishing up really quickly. Here is their menu, complete with prices: 繼續閱讀
