Fika is a social institution in Sweden; it means having a coffee with one’s colleagues, friends, date, or family. When we got wind of Fika Café, we knew we had to give it a shot. How often do we come across a Swedish café (No, IKEA’s not counted) that is halal? It located right at the junction of Beach road and Arab street, a place that is popular with Middle Eastern tourists and Persian carpet merchants in the Kampong Glam area, it naturally made sense. We ordered Kopparberg Pear Cider ($7.90), Korvstroganoff ($17.90), Mushroom and leek pasta ($15.90) + Additional Meatballs ($7.50), Meatballs ($19.50), Mushroom crepe ($15.90) and Apple crumble ($9.90).Fika – it’s Scandinavian cooking that’s simple but homely and hearty – and we loved it. Meatballs are a must try! Please refer to www.ieatandeat.com for details review. 繼續閱讀

For more details, please visit http://www.foodesteem.blogspot.sg/2014/05/fika-swedish-cafe-bistro.htmlLocated in the area of the popular "Haji Lane", FIKA Swedish Cafe & Bistro, a Halal Café, is seen at the junction of Arab Street and Beach Road.First floor seems crowded to host a big group, thus we went to the upper level. So much cozier and and spacious!Mains: Grilled Chicken Crepe ($17.50) with cheese, sesame mayo and tomatoes topped with alfalfa.Mains: Tunnbrodsrulle ($18.90). Classic Swedish thin bread roll with mashed potatoes, grilled sausage, fried shallots, homemade bostongurka and tomato/chili sauce.Similar to a wrap, and I love how firm and yet squishy the sausage is when I bite through it!For more details, please visit http://www.foodesteem.blogspot.sg/2014/05/fika-swedish-cafe-bistro.html 繼續閱讀

Wanted to try Swedish food, hence went Fika's to get a taste of what its like. Been back at least once more, since then.We started with the Blueberry Soup (hot) - something that I had wanted to try during my last visit but did not get to. It was thick and sweet, with sour hints - I felt like I was drinking heated up Blueberry Juice or Syrup. In fact, if I had chosen the cold soup instead of hot, it would have made for the perfect dinner juice drink. Nonetheless, it was interesting - a hot, nutritious, sweet soup to kickstart the meal. For starter, I had the Swedish Homemade Meatballs - a palatable delicacy served with soft, powdery boiled potatoes and salad on the side. I loved the tender mincedmeat balls - tasty and loosely-knitted so that the texture was light and nearly fluffy. Well, as fluffy as meat goes. I have never tried Swedish food before unless you count the meatballs from Ikea. So one day I decide to head to Fika Swedish Cafe and Bistro, which also happens to be halal! My friends and I ordered Cheesy Potato Wedges ($8.90), Pannbiff ($19.90), Meatball Melt ($17.90), Aglio Olio with shrimps ($22.80) and Grilled Chicken crepe ($17.50).At the top, is the Pannbiff, which has a hamburger patty, salad and mashed potato on the side. While dining, we find that there is not enough sauce to go with the mashed potato. Thus we asked for more sauce from the staff and they obliged. (Talk about good service!)At the bottom is the cheesy potato wedges topped with melted cheddar cheese. Cheese goes great with just about everything and this made a good appetizer! (Warning: it may become too cloying if eaten alone so best to share!)I absolutely love this open-topped sandwich. The bread is toasty and crusty and the meatballs is so so good. When eaten together, its like a match made in heaven. The crepe looks plain but do not be deceived by its looks. Plain but really tasty. Talk about savory!Last but not least, the Aglio Olio with Swedish fresh- water shrimps. If you order the Aglio Olio itself, it costs $14.90, and you can choose from chicken, meatballs, smoked salmon or shrimps. I would highly recommend meatballs if you want to eat pasta and try the meatballs. This is because among all the dishes, the ones that left a really deep impression are the Pannbiff (hamburger patty) and the Meatball Melt (meatball sandwich). Therefore if you get the meatballs and pasta, its like the best of both worlds! The cafe is beautifully designed although the ambience is a little dim compared to the Millenia Walk outlet. Still it is a good place to go for Swedish meatballs! 繼續閱讀

When i told my swedish friend about how i loved IKEA meatballs, he totally pooh-pooed at me a and said that it wasn’t authentic at all! Imagine my shock. haha. I still love it anyway! But Fika is one that has gotten the stamp of approval from the Swedish community in singapore, and after dining there, I could see why! The quality of the food there is exactly what you would expect from the swedish – impeccable.Obviously a must-try when you dine at fika would be their swedish meatballs ($18.50) ^^ and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t! it’s simply darn awesome!! the meatballs are cooked to tender perfection such that they have just the right consistency (you’ll know what i mean when you eat it), and they are deliciously flavoured! smother them in sauce, or have them with the ligonberry jam on the side. i love how the sweet jam contrasts with the savoury meat, giving it a whole new perspective.while i had a tiny gripe about how the aglio olio pasta in it’s most basic form ($15.90) was well, really just pasta and nothing else (you can top-up for meat options), i couldn’t deny that this was a beautifully executed dish! the al dente pasta was smooth and springy, and the aroma of garlic emanated from the dish, making it so appetizing.there are so many dishes on the menu that you’d want to order, but save some room for dessert! i loved our swedish brownie ($8.90)!! a warm chocolate-y brownie, with a slightly chewy texture, juxtaposed against the cool vanilla ice-cream, and drizzled with fresh berries compote. this is chocolate, vanilla & strawberry all in one!
