Lemon White Chocolate Cheesecake ($8)

Recommended over carrot cake, this thick slice sported a simple baked lemon slice on top. Fluffy like a Japanese cheesecake and citrusy like a lemon drop. It is incredible how lemon and cheese go so well together. Hardly any of the cloyingness that a rich cheesecake has, this was as delightful a tea item as a dessert.

Truffs Earl Grey Chocolate Tart ($13)

Attempt this only if the dessert compartment is empty or if you are an absolute chocolate fan. I have been dying to try Truffs for the longest time now so it is a surprise find to have them stocked here! Buttery smooth chocolate summed this tart up, no sign of pastry except for the equally delish crumble on top. It does get too much at some point but no chocolate is enough for a diehard.

Iced Coffee ($5)

Not so much a coffee place, for the caffeine fix yes but not to silence any cravings.

Five and Dime is cosy and quaint. While I would recommend it for a first date, perhaps just a dessert date.

The cafe's setting is very cute, like an old white colonial house! Inside the cafe, it is very bright and the staffs were very welcoming. I did like the design of the place. The eggs benedict was good. The egg not under or over cooked, with a nice yellow runny yolk. It is possibly one of the best I have ever ate in Singapore. The cafe sells a lot of comfort food, price range between $20-30.

Five & Dime Eatery opened to much fanfare last year and getting a reservation on weekends have been near to impossible until recently. Located along River Valley road, this charming white-washed two-storey shophouse is almost hard to miss, and surprisingly accessible with the bus-stops strategically situated nearby.

The first floor is decidedly more chic as compared to the second, with a minimalist bar where the cocktails are concocted and diners can choose between the stylish stools that line the bar counter or the lacquered wood tables with matching chairs of brown and seafoam. My favourite spot in the day would probably be at the tables beside the windows, where a ray of sunlight enters and falls onto your food so naturally.

The French Toast $15 came highly recommended by the server and it was good! That piece of fried toast with a slab of butter melting so conspicuously and lathering the entire surface was simply a standout. The best part would be munching down the middle section where the bread has soaked up all the butter with sticky notes of syrup. While it comes with a choice of pork bacon or chicken chipolata and fruit salad, the french toast is really all you need on the plate.

Possibly what Five and Dime Eatery is most popularly known for, their Mentaiko Pasta $18 is yet another dish seen on almost every table. The spaghetti was cooked al-dente and tossed in creamy mentaiko sauce before being topped with more cod fish roe. If you are those who shy away from dishes with a 'fishy' aftertaste then this is probably not for you. Apart from that, I liked how it was not overly heavy and brimming with umami. This is one creamy pasta you will not find difficulty finishing on your own.

We could have probably stopped after a salad, two mains and dessert but after seeing how almost every table had a platter of Fish and Chips $20, it was hard to resist ordering it as well.

I liked how the deep fried battered catfish, cut into smaller pieces, gave the illusion that there was more fish. It was flaky, crisp and extremely fresh. While I am hardly the best judge of Fish and Chips, I thought this one was possibly one of the better ones I have had. Extra points for presentation and the overall rustic feel contributed by those chunky cut fries as well.

Ordering the dessert from the blackboard was not the smartest of ideas because the prices were not written next to it. And let's face it, $15 for this Tiramisu Affrogato Parfait is quite a stretch. With that said, the deconstructed Tiramisu did admittedly hit the sweet spot and comes with a shot of Affrogato served separately on the side so you can regulate the intensity you want.

Overall, I am glad I finally paid a visit to Five & Dime Eatery, which has been on my radar for quite some time now. While the food does come in relatively petite portions and is not exactly cheap either, I can understand why this eatery continuously draws the crowd. Simple, uncomplicated and comforting, I definitely foresee a second visit in the near future.

I find Five & Dime a little inacessible, but my friend was raving about it so I decided to give it a try. One should try to get reservations during weekends as it may get crowded. The eggs benedict was good, but not the best I have tried; the hollandaise sauce it not that tasty compared to prive's. It also comes with seared beef. At around 16 dollars, this is pretty standard pricing, and portion was good.

Crispy battered fish fillets seems to be tougher than the usual dory from what I read on the menu it was “shark catfish”, but it still was juicy. Not much seasoning, you still would need to eat it with a dip such as tartare sauce.
“Handcut fries” were wedges-shaped, was crisp.

Seared Salmon –
It seems to be a little overcooked as the meat was dry. Coated with a savoury and creamy mozarella and parmesan cheese, the overall combination was more on the saltier side. Mashed Potatoes were a little lumpy , and there wasn’t any gravy. Salad was ok.

Mentaiko pasta –
The only nice dish out of these 3 , spaghetti was cooked al dente, generous with their cod fish roe, the mentaiko sauce was flavoursome.

I find the food to be so-so only but I guess the service, decor and ambience of the place make up for it. I will be back again most probably to try out their dinner menu! I heard the mentaiko pasta is good!

Heading there for weekend brunch, it was a lovely ambience, perfect for catching up with friends and chilling over a cup of coffee. Pity that they close for a break at 3pm though, and there aren’t any dessert places within walking distance around, so you’re pretty much left with leaving for somewhere else in town or around Great World City if you’re looking for an extended chilling time.

This was one satisfying dish we had, with a mix of almost everything you would associate with a sumptuous breakfast. We chose scrambled eggs for this and thought it was done pretty well. Creamy and milky enough for our palate, well complemented with the slightly sweet and crisp thick toast.

This would be the most classic brunch item on my list, and we were all disappointed to see the small serving portion they had. We were still hopeful initially and thought perhaps it was goodness in a small package, but our impression was made worse after doing the eggs ben test, and uncovering a layer of cooked yolk surrounding the rich orange flow. The accompanying hollandaise sauce was pretty alright, though I would have preferred a more generous serving of it.

Served on warm brioche instead of the usual muffins or toast, I found it a little too soft for my liking and it lacked the varying textures to have in a mouthful. Other reviews that we’ve googled spoke about the beef that was used that made it special but the one we saw only had smoked ham and it pretty much tasted like a normal eggs ben to me.

Good thing was the spiced potatoes they had on the side, which had a home-made feel to it. It comes with a fruit salad too, basically a combination of different fruits placed in a bowl. A refreshing good-to-have!

The huge slabs of pancakes with a rich buttermilk smell caught our attention immediately when it was served. Expecting it to be quite dense with the rich creamy fragrance, we were quite surprised to cut open to a pretty fluffy version. This was definitely to my liking and I found it good to even have it on its own without the butter or maple syrup. An ordinary plate of pancakes done well in our opinion!

Brunch is never complete without a cup of coffee to go along! Opting for the milder version, I decided to settle for cappuccino and this managed to please my palate perfectly. I liked how smooth it was, and wasn’t too bitter for me. It left a nice mild lingering taste.

I’m no coffee expert, and found it pretty strange to spot more bubbles appearing after leaving the coffee to settle. My friend told me it was due to the different frothing of the milk, hence the top layer began to turn from fine froth to bigger bubbles and then ‘cavities’. cy and tmcy also said that perhaps the milk has been over-frothed, hence too much air within. Any coffee guru who can enlighten us on this?

A great place to chill over the weekend, it’s usually packed despite how ulu it is. Known for their Mentaiko Pasta, we didn’t manage to try it as it seemed a little too heavy for brunch with its rich creamy flavours. I would probably return for its pancakes and to give the Mentaiko Pasta a shot!

If not for our friends, we would never have known about Five & Dime. It's one of those places that's flown so below the radar despite the fact that it's been around for at least a year. A tiny but cosy hole-in-the-wall premises along River Valley Road, Five & Dime oozes a casual laidback vibe. We like it for its unpretentious and easy ambience. In line with the eatery's relaxed atmosphere, the food served up is simple, no-fuss western favourites with an asian twist.

Reservations is a must - we were there on a Wednesday night and they were full from dinner to supper.

Generally, dinner was a hit and miss affair. Some were memorably great in their simplicity and boast a familiar, comfort-food element about it, but some were disappointingly lackluster.

We had:

1) Fish & Chips ($20): one of the better renditions that we've had in a while, and a quick glance at the other tables proves that the classically British fare is quite a popular hit. Thin light crisp batter, fresh, fleshy, flaky shark catfish fillets and thick handcut fries that are coated in the same flavoursome batter as the fish, these were delicious

2) Chicken Wings ($7 for 3 wings and drumlets) is an absolute MUST-TRY. Next to Ikea's version, these are the best chicken wings this side of town. No more braving the long queues at Ikea whenever the craving for chicken wings strikes. These had a old-school quality about it, like those 70-cents wings that you used to enjoy in your school canteens. Deeply marinated with 9 different asian spices so the flavour soaks right to the bone, lip-smackingly juicy and wonderfully crisp skin.

3) Mac & Cheese ($15): an acquired taste. In addition to the lobster sauce infused into the 3 cheeses (cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan), the distinctive flavour of mentaiko is layered upon the already rich seafood base. This is where the chef's Japanese cuisine background has obviously influenced this dish. A bit too cloying and rich, if you ask me. That said, this would be great if you love everything mentaiko, but not so much, if you're like me, who prefers the creamy pollock roe in small doses

4) Char-Grilled Ribeye ($28): a slab of 200gm of NZ grain-fed red meat, served with grilled vine tomatoes and asparagus, was entirely forgettable, insipid and generally lacking in finesse. No smoky elements of a great grill, and not robust enough in flavour

Five & Dime serves one of the best brunches in Singapore with dishes, such as their highly acclaimed Eggs Benny (S$17) - an orchestra of hollandaise-drenched poached eggs set upon slices of smoked ham and toasted brioche, alongside with the complementation of breakfast potatoes, vinaigrette-tossed mesclun greens and fruit salad in a cute orange ramekin.

Take comfort in their sandwiches as well, like how their classic Egg Mayo & Bacon Panini (S$12) sent oohs-and-ahhs to my buddy who devoured this in minutes. Savoury, flavourful and a burst of textures within slices of perfectly toasted panini. Oh, and it comes complete with a potato salad.

One's meal is never complete without desserts. A friendly staff recommended a towering dessert of strawberries and cream set upon some crisps (can't remember name) which is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. To be honest, not very "wow-inducing" for the hefty price though..

In a nutshell, Five & Dime Eatery definitely makes it up to one of my favourite brunch places with its extensive variety of brunch and dinner dishes. Although slightly overpriced, why worry about spending a few extra bucks on an occasional splurge?

The katsu curry is average also with the curry served separately but taste a little like the instant packs ones. Drinks wise nothing much to shout about but the mocha on mars is the kind you can taste actual coffee bits, not sure if that was intentional though. I guess this place you will visit it for the ambiance and nice setting. I also saw some old school food snacks like hiro cake on the shelf but disappointingly none was offered to the guest, its meant for decoration I suppose.

So chocolate yourself out guys.
Earl Grey chocolate tart.
I love all things Earl Grey and this was not an exception.
Thick and rich chocolate infused with the smell and subtle taste of Earl Grey,
topped with cinnamon crumble and a lonesome berry.
The crumble wasn't buttery enough for satisfaction but provided a distinction from just pure chocolate decadence.
Or end your dessert here.
The nutella brownie with Fig and Honey ice cream.
So have the ice cream. And maybe two scoops of it.
Bits of honey and fig in a deliciously creamy vanilla ice cream base.
I didn't like those chocolate pop balls because they weren't -that- crunchy.
I'm really picky with dessert it seems after our Parisian adventure.
The nutella in the brownie was only evident on the top layer and well, that's just it.
I put a scoop of nutella on a slice of brownie cake.
Hmm.
Just a note though,
we realised too late that you could request for the brownie to be served warm and they'd very conscientiously put the scoop of ice cream on the side when it's served.
Maybe that would've impressed me more.

It was noon, but we were there for breakfast on a lazy Sunday. Yes, they serve all-day breakfast. The menu is extensive for breakfast items but not country-specific like Wild Honey. Traditional (but modernised by them?) English platter, pancakes (savoury or sweet), waffles, toast and both Croques make decision-making a while longer.

And when the items came, I found them to be plesantly sunny in arrangement and presentation, salad leaves are fresh, and servings good for sharing. The counter and serving staff are young, and so are the patrons (who are youngish if you include me).

Even though I'm not used to forking out nearly $20 plus taxes minus drink (I asked for free tap water) for breakfast, I find it a good place for a catch-up with friends instead of the usual pb crawl or late suppers. It's an occasional splurge, but on breakfast, that should be well worth it. Afterall, there's a saying: "Breakfast is golden."
