In the Chinatown point has this very nice and cosy Japanese restaurant which is one of my favourite venue to grab some Japanese cuisines. Service here is also warm and fast. Love their Black pepper chicken don ($5.80) per bowl is quite generous in portion and the Japanese rice is fragrant and soft. Chicken is cooked with lots of black pepper sauce which is very flavourful and appetizing. As for the Oyako Don ($5.80 too) is alright but not my favourite.

So we first got ourselves our Root Beer Float ($3.80) and they were generous with the big scoop of vanilla icecream, not too gasy nor sweet.

Then I've got to order my favorites from their menu, the California Roll ($3.80) and Dragon Roll ($3.80). The avocado were freshly sliced and tasted so great in our mouths, a must order!

If you haven't been to Genki Sushi already, one of the reason you'll love this place is the orders' train, where every orders you placed on the ordering pad will zoom out from the kitchen to right next to your table! Well except for some dishes that are hot like the Unagi Rice or Udon etc.

Then we've spotted something new on their menu called the SS Shrimp Roll ($3.80) which is basically a nice paper-thined roll tucked with fried tempura shrimp and fresh raw salmon, wrapped crabmeat along with some greens for mixture of texture and flavour. It compliments well with the ketchup that comes with it too, interesting combination!

And here's the rest of our table of Genki Sushi loves. From the centre there's the Tamago Sushi ($1.80), Egg Salad Sushi ($2.30), more California Roll ($3.80) and Dragon Roll ($3.80), Deep Fried Gyoza ($3.80), Kamikama Maki ($2.30) and lastly the favorite Deep Fried Squid Arm ($3.80).

At the end of the day, another thing that interests me is the hole for customers to insert the plates, so that we can always have a nicely cleared table! This is new to me since I didn't see it at the Orchard Central's outlet. Kind of fun actually!

Overall, Genki Sushi will always be in my favorites list for sushi cravings. Not only am I in love with the concept, the efficiency in orders, friendly staff and interesting ambience, the great menu have also always kept me satisfied throughout the way. Highly recommended place!

Instead of the normal sushi belt, Genki Sushi adopts a train kind of service in which you would first order your food with the Ipad provided, your orders will then be sent directly to the kitchen and lastly the train will transport your food over!

Not only that, after eating you would have to slot the empty plates into the mechanised sushi plate-clearing system. Every 8 plates cleared will actually earn you a jackpot chance!

Dishes that i will never missed whenever i am at Genki will be their Spicy Salmon/ Tuna sushi and all those fresh Sashimi!

After ordering the food arrive in a bullet train on the conveyor belt ... this really attract my girl a lot! Is really cool and food serve really fast too! Love the root beer float it is refreshing! Green tea is free flow and is a DIY version they serve the green tea powder on the table and you have to mix it yourself! Great to have mix it on your own liking! Chawanmushi very smooth, chicken terriyaki don is really good. Generous sauce and chicken is tender best is they serve in kid's side for kids! My girl finished everything!!!

Sushi is machine made so the sushi is a bit loose when it is pick up but cannot complain much after all is quite cheap overall we spend $30.

The Fried Chicken ($1.80) is just one of the many creative sushis that appears in Genki Sushi’s menu. Unique to its own, it takes a fried piece of bite-sized chicken and places on top of sushi rice wrapped in seaweed with mayo squeezed on the top. The chicken remains to be particularly fragrant though lacks crispiness. The rice is just nicely sweet and seemed pretty tightly packed as it held on firmly. While not the most delectable sushi served here, it holds as one that gives a stronger impression and a kind of novelty to have.

The Salmon Triple Flavour ($3.80) is one of the sushis that I will always go for. It is essentially the mix of three different flavours of Salmon sushi that are all served in the menu. The plain jane Salmon sushi remains as the simplest of the lot, with a fresh piece of Salmon sitting on the firmly packed rice that melts on the mouth. The one in the middle is Salmon with Black Pepper, which comes with mayonnaise and cracked black pepper. The crunch of the black pepper is distinct, with its smoky taste but surprisingly not spicy nor choking, though heavy on the taste of Japanese Mayo. The last one is Salmon with Pollock Roe which is like a mentaiko sort of taste and remains to be one of my favourites in the trio of flavours.

I don’t recall having Smoked Duck ($2.30) in the outlet at Orchard Central; could have been one of the menu items that is exclusively sold in the Chinatown Point outlet. The Smoked Duck is pretty savoury but a bit tough compared to the ones I had in other places though still pretty decent. We just did not like how it felt like the duck was just thrown on the top of the rice because it came off from the sushi rather easily.

Edo Style Egg ($2.30) was a sushi with rice stuffed in between a huge slab of tamago. Do not mistake the tamago here to be from the regular Tamago Sushi. The tamago here is cooked and served warm, and despite it having the usual sweetness in tamago, it also was pretty custardy inside.

Fried Gyoza ($2.30) is available in both sushi form and ala-carte form where it is being served in threes alone. The sushi version is depicted here where it sits on top of sushi rice and drizzled in mayonnaise. The Gyoza seemed to be fried upon order which is the reason why it takes a bit more time for this sushi to arrive. The Gyoza is served piping hot and is crispy on the skin yet filled with firm meaty goodness inside. Normally we end up dissecting the Gyoza from the rice while we eat the sushi because we would not want to risk our gums getting hurt by the sharp edges on the skin of the Gyoza. Besides that, it is also seemingly too tall to fit inside the mouth in whole. While this is another one of those sushi that has a novelty factor to it, it is seemingly better executed than the Fried Chicken sushi.

Grilled River Eel ($3.80) is also the name of the Unagi Sushi sold here. The usual sauce that comes with Unagi Sushis elsewhere is being served separately in a packet where you can opt to drizzle the sauce on top of the Unagi if you wish. The sauce in the packet is salty yet sweet which fits with the grilled eel perfectly, while the grilled eel is a bit scaly that night, though it seemed rather reasonable.

To end the meal, we have decided to order dessert. The Brownie ($5.80) itself blew us off with its quality. The crusty exterior that leads into the slightly sticky interior. A fact that I like about this Brownie also is that it does not contain nuts which meant that the texture was consistent. The Brownie also held itself quite well without crumbling down and that it was served warm; the way we liked it. It was definitely something we did not expect a sushi restaurant to offer.

Genki sushi needs to expand; having only 2 outlets in Singapore is not enough. It's arguably one of the best affordable sushi places around (other than the one at citylink mall which I haven't tried), and definitely much better than sakae. I got their soft shell crab handroll which was good, hot and crispy, and not to mention the must-try pollock roe sushis - either seared salmon or ebi, both are good. Also had their surf clam sushi and fried tofu. Very value for money.

And unlike other conveyor belt sushi restaurants that actually have plates of sushi rotating round all the time, undoubtedly affecting the freshness and quality of what you eat, sushi here at Genki Sushi is prepared upon order and delivered right to your table in the form of the most adorable Shinkansen bullet train. There are three train tracks running concurrently so you do not have to worry about a possible 'traffic congestion' even with the lunch or dinner crowds.

Orders here are taken on the iPad, where you can scroll and swipe through the various selections of each category on the menu before placing your order. And in line with their mechanized system for fast and efficient service, customers are encouraged to drop their empty plates into a slot at the side of the table which is linked to a plate-clearing system and brings it straight to the kitchen for washing. How convenient and fuss-free!

Hot green tea (ocha) is also self serviced, with the green tea powder and hot water dispenser at your table for your convenience. Matcha lovers can make a thicker brew by varying the amount of green tea powder while others will find that one teaspoon will suffice for a decent cup.

The Scallop Carpaccio Sushi $5.80 is a new item on the menu and one of the 'Haru Select' offerings which have been launched to mark the coming of Spring. Fresh whole scallops simply prepared, allowing the natural sweet notes to titillate the taste buds and a splash of soy sauce to pull it all together. Seafood lovers will find this one particularly endearing and enjoyable.

One of my usual orders at Japanese restaurants is the Soft Shell Crab Handroll. Genki's version featured a generous portion of crisp crunchy soft shell crab which sat well with the creamy avocado slices and proportionate amount of rice. The seaweed (nori) used to wrap the roll however, was lacking and too chewy.

My favourite of the day and also a signature dish here at Genki Sushi, the Cream Cheese Premium Shrimp Sushi $5.80 is a must order especially for cheese lovers! The layer of seared melted cream cheese with bits of Parmesan on the large sized shrimp was quite unforgettable with the creaminess and contrast of textures.

Dessert options are few on the menu but the ice-cream served here is from Meiji so you can only expect great quality with intense flavours. My vote goes to the Sesame Ice-cream which had that authentic richness of black sesame paste. Simply scrumptious and delightful.

The Genki Sushi chain has indeed brought sushi dining to a whole new level while ordering, in sushi preparation and serving up quality food efficiently with pocket friendly prices. Kids will definitely enjoy watching their plates of sushi being served via the Kousoku (express) system and 'depositing' their plates into the slot system. Eating sushi just got a lot more fun and interactive.

I love the interesting conveyor belt concept here! The food that we ordered will arrive in toy trains which is so cute to watch. They have a ipad ordering system which is really efficient! within 3 minutes your food will come in those toy trains. Love it Food wise it is up to stardard too. I love all the salmon dishes that i have ordered. They are so fresh and yummy. The scallop is good too. But the sauce is a bit too sour. Overall, i really love this sushi place and will definitely visit again

Genki sushi is a good alternative to sakae sushi if you are craving for some sushi; it is reasonably priced although not that cheap compared to nihon mura. I had a few plates of sushi and a handroll, the soft shell crab handroll which costs $3.80 - not that fantastic as the crab was a rather small piece, and was quite oily. The sushi costs $2.30 on average, and the seared salmon sushi, lobster salad, were good, among many others. Cream croquette at $3.80 wasn't that good, quite oily.

Secondly, the convenient way of ordering food. I always have trouble flagging down a staff for assistance in some restaurants.. Is asking for a refill or enquiry about my 40-minute late order a problem? Huh? Huh? With the iPad, I can order what I want when I want to.. Please note that if you buy take-outs, you order with iPad too!

Thirdly, the combination of first and second reason.. I can clear my own table and make space for more food! Hahahaaa..

I was shocked to find bones in my salmon sashimi.

I seldom dine at commercialized sushi conveyor belt restaurants in Singapore because these places are infamous for frozen sashimi, low quality sushi and Japanese food. I decided to give Genki Sushi a try because of many positive reviews from the local food blogosphere like:

http://www.misstamchiak.com/genki-sushi/
http://danielfooddiary.com/2013/03/21/genkisushi/

(No offence to these respected bloggers, I believe that their entries are true to their real-life experiences but unfortunately my personal dining experience begs to differ)

It was public holiday for Labour Day, yet I felt my hard-earned dollars were terribly wasted on dinner at this Japanese sushi restaurant.

Food and Customer Service

Nothing fantastic. In fact nothing good. The swordfish belly was tough and half-frozen. The deep fried soft shell crab was very greasy and oily. Similarly, the cream croquette was greasy and resembled something I would get out of those frozen packs of party food at the supermarket.

The very first salmon sushi my friend bit into, had a 1 &a half-inch-long bone in it.
I was shocked that a bone of such considerable length could be overlooked in such a thin slice of fish.

I raised my hand to alert a “crew” member (At Genki, there are waiters/waitresses in light brown uniform and a couple of staff in black t-shirts that read “crew” at the back. I’m guessing the “crew” are the managers? Do correct me if I’m wrong) who did not stop when passing our table but instead waved a (brown-uniformed) waitress over to us.

After 5 mins, a Chinese waitress came up to us. We explained the bone issue to her calmly and nicely. She was more concerned about the fact that the “crew” staff who waved her over to us should have been responsible for the bone problem, not her. She said she would tell the kitchen but it would be better if we do it ourselves so she wouldn’t be blamed for the bone problem. Also, the “crew” member should be dealing with this, not her, because we alerted him initially.

Nope I am not impressed.

The flashy iPad minis that you can order your food and monitor your bill from? The first one we used was on 4% battery life. It died on us in the middle of the meal. We alerted the staff, who took it away and nothing came back even after 15 minutes. We requested for another, from a “crew” member who hastily walked away without waiting for me to finish my sentence. Then we got another iPad mini with a 7% battery life. WOW thank you Genki, I am so impressed with the 3% increase, this is an emotional moment for me.

I saw at least 20 iPad charging stations at the entrance and a couple of iPad minis unused and sitting idle in their docks.

We stopped ordering because we realised the bill has totalled up to S$54+ when we were only a third full from the meal.

When I was about to pay for my meal, I politely asked if they had a customer feedback system I could use. She was hesitant and said that the office was not fully set up, there was no feedback forum/ email/ whatsoever.

Visited Chinatown Point branch on 1st May 2013 for dinner.
