Merlion Wayfarer had been wanting to try out Grin Affair since she saw it on Bryan Wong's variety show, Share Something (我爱公开), which showcased a different blogger in each episode. To her, cakes stored in glass jars were well, kinda cool. Plus all the names given, and the brown tag given for each jar returned to get a discount.

The first time that she went there was the day after the broadcast of the episode. It was only 2pm in the afternoon and the cakes were sold out. (The outlet closes at 8pm daily.) There was another family outside who had seen the show and wanted to try the cakes. Both the groups walked away disappointed.

So it was with great excitement when Merlion Wayfarer went on a Sunday and found the shop open!

Homely shop sign, albet a bit mouldy as it was made from corkboard and left exposed to the weather elements...

When she entered the store, she was served by an elderly uncle. Initially she was surprised, as it was a different person showcased on the TV show. The scene did feel a bit surreal as Merlion Wayfarer had just stepped in from the bright 35-degree sunshine outside into a darkened shop in an old housing estate and the old man was threading cardboard squares. Was he going to pull out some old spell?

Just a while later, the back door opened. Was the witch going to appear with some spell from a musty back cupboard?

No... It was just a Yando (handsome guy) in a tight-fitting T-shirt. He seemed a bit sullen. Oooops, did they wake him from his afternoon sleep?

(The Yandao's head got in the way of this pic - He is too tall!)

The beautifully-wrapped jam jar cakes. Oooops, they forgot to give Merlion Wayfarer another tag. Would she be coming back again?

Costing S$4.80 a jar, the Honey Lavender tasted like - well, normal. The cake was an ordinary sponge cake. There was no trace of the "lavender" at all.

As for the Dark Chocolate, it was... indescribable. It was the first time that Merlion Wayfarer tasted a SALTY Chocolate Cake. It was so salty that she could not eat beyond 1/3 of the small jar. The mousse was excessively creamy and the cake dry. OMG... and it warranted a visit to the toilet. No more, no more!

Mrupupup visited this little dessert shop known as the 'Grin Affair' at 3 Everton Park, #01-77a (Everton Park HDB estate). Grin Affair serves cakes in little glass jars and comes in many flavours. Mrupupup tried out the chocolate and honey lavender berries cakes. Mrupupup likes that the shop tries to be environmentally friendly by using pretty glass jars and recycled paper.

Situated in a quiet neighbourhood of Tanjong Pagar, Grin Affair is located at the void deck of a HDB estate. The moose cakes were contained in jars and chilled. Prices ranged from $4.80 - $5.50. Looking at the jars just made me so happy.
We bought them as take-aways as the shop has limited seating capacity.

We tried the strawberry custard and boy was it so refreshing! There were chunks of strawberry with a mix of strawberry moose and layered with vanilla sponge cake. Right at the bottom were crumbs which the texture was like oats-like? I personally didn't enjoy the last part, but overall it was an interesting combination.

Matcha and azuki bean moose cake wasn't what we might commonly see in menus and of course we couldn't miss it. There were chunks of azuki beans mixed with green tea moose and layered with vanilla sponge cake, topped up with walnuts. The moose was not too mushy and i thought the taste was acceptable, not too strong of a matcha taste which non-matcha fans can give it a try.

and of course, we couldn't have walked out without the dark chocolate and durian moose cakes!! Dark chocolate was so chocolately, and there was a ball-like chocolate at the top of the cake, with layers of chocolate moose and chocolate sponge cake. I personally enjoyed this the most and it was enough to satisfy my chocolate craving. Durian was a sinful but delectable one, as we both thought the durian moose was very rich and fresh, and of coursed layered over sponge cake as well. yumz

Owner said that as these are freshly made, it is best to not keep them for long. Customers are encouraged to return empty jars to her where she has this 'return jar' policy which entitles to redemption of dried fruits - check out her web for more information =)
