Ordered Yakitori don and chicken hotpot. The decoration is quite unique of Japanese style.

Finally our food arrived, hotspot soup still require to be cook about 5 mins. One quick sight and it is really fresh and served with prawns, tofu, chicken piece , meat ball with lots of vegetables. The special soup is so shiok when warm. It also came with rice, streaming eggs, Miso soup and overall portion can be for 1-2pax.
Yakitori don was also tasteful with teriyaki sauce and 3 stick of Yakitori stick. The sauce have made a nice combination.

Overall food presentation was very professionally. The service is good as assistance and clearing of plates without any request. Must try.

We opted for healthier choice, of course the set included their signature grilled fish. Beautifully presented in a wooden boat platter, some pickles and Miso soup came along side by side. Colourful classic mix of sushi, the combination was appealing enough to attract my taste buds. Unfortunately, I found the fish was a little dry yet the sauce went well with sushi. I must say the Salmon was fresh, Tempura and Ramen did its part well. Overall was simple and enjoyable. Reasonable portion for reasonable price, it costed at $24.99. Sharing by two of us, it was satisfying meal indeed.

The food portion looks seemingly small in the pictures so I picked out about 5 savory items and an Onigiri as the carbo dish. The drink and a small complimentary appetizer was served right after placing order.

The spinach cold dish was nice and refreshing. However, I was kinda disappointed that they have stopped serving complimentary skewered seafood as complimentary starter dish which I had on my first visit.
Grilled Onigiri w/ miso paste $3.99++, this was lightly grilled over charcoal fire to bring out the smokey aroma of the miso paste. It was very tasty and the chef did a good job of making sure the rice is still soft and moist despite having gone through the grilling process.

Grilled Asparagus wrapped w/ Bacon $4.99++, this is a no brainer pick on my part as it is a guaranteed yummy dish. Who could resist anything made with crispy bacon?

Grilled Chicken meatball w/ half boiled egg $4.99++, I had this before and I'm having it again, as this is way too delicious to not order again. The marinated minced chicken meat slow cooked on a large wooden spoon was extremely juicy and flavorful, and dipping it into the creamy half boiled egg just takes it to a whole new level. Must try!

This is something new, Grilled Miso paste w/ fresh vegetables $4.99++. The Miso paste is the main focus here even though it was supposed to be the dipping sauce for the freshly cut veggies. The miso paste has added bits of finely chopped veggies to enhance its flavor and the grilling process gave it a really nice smokey fragrance. It was quite tasty but a tad too salty for my palate.

Grilled Salmon belly $11.99++, another dish that I had previously and don't mind having it again and again. The restaurant has limited servings of these daily and it gets sold out pretty fast. It is not hard to figure out why it is such a popular dish. Being the softest part of the fish, the tender and succulent meat was oozing juicy goodness from within...simply divine!

At this point, I already knew I had over-ordered for tonight. All the dishes served were really larger in portion as compared to what I saw on the pictures. It didn't help that my last dish was also a big portion one. Tonpei Yaki とんぺい焼き $7.99++, a Japanese Izakaya styled omelette with pork belly slices and chopped veggies topped with savory tonkatsu sauce and creamy mayo.

This was a truly mouth-watering dish, there were generous amount of juicy pork belly slices in the omelette. I was pleasantly surprised that they are charging only 8 bucks for this dish! Definitely recommended.
I didn't manage to finish all my food in one seating so I packed them back for dinner next day. The pork omelette and the salmon belly remains very delish even after sitting in the fridge and being reheated after one day!
The service level here definitely scores high points in my good books, very professional and polite like in every authentic Japanese restaurant. Coupled with reasonably priced and fantastic food, this is Hamanoya's recipe for keeping their customers happy, and coming back again and again.

Skewed Scallop - FOC
Without ordering anything, they brought us the Skewed Scallop for starter. While slowly grilling the scallop over a warm charcoal, waiting for our food to be served. What a great idea. Watching the scallop been cooked and enjoying the conversation with my family.

They simply brush the scallop with soy sauce. We were able to taste the slight sweet of the scallop.

Hokke - $16.99
We love this fish. It was 'semi-dried' and grilled until the color turned brownish. Squeezed a wedge of lemon to counter the fatness from the fish. The chef was able to seal in all the juice. When we 'tackled' it with our chopstick, the fat from the fish just oozed out. Very well seasoned.

Sashimi - $16.99
Only 5 piece costed $16.99. It tasted really good. We can felt the texture of the fish. It was slightly chewy, thus we were able to taste the flavor clearly as the fragrant of the fish spread through our mouth. However, it was too expensive.

Mixed Skewers - $12.99
There were 5 different skewers consist of pork, chicken and beef. Seasoned with sweet soy sauce. The meat weren't too tough. However, it was slightly bland. Interesting idea to dip the meat in the egg yolk, causing a smoother texture.

Kawasaki - $7.99
Slightly overcooked and the fish head was frozen. The chef simply seasoned with salt and grilled until high heat. The taste was OK. Compared to the rest of the dish, it wasn't too expensive.

The Price was slightly high but the experience was good. However, the floor crew still need more training. We asked for the filling for green tea before they responded. The restaurant still unable to handle big crowd.

Hamanoya's Shoukadou Bento ($24.99++) is set meal that has a bit of everything. There is tempura, sashimi, aburi chicken char siew, omelette, agedashi tofu, whelk, fruits, charcoal grilled scallop and prawn, rice, miso soup and pickles.

Interesting is the sauces that served with it. There is matcha salt which the staff recommends dipping the tempura with. Greenish in colour, it tastes like salt with a hint of green tea. Coupled with the crispy tempura, it tastes rather unique. If you like it spicy, you try the other yuzu sauce, which looks like green chilli paste but tastes with a hint of yuzu. Overall it is a very nice offering by the restaurant.

Potato Salad with Smoked Saba ($5.99++) is quite a big serving. There is a lot of vegetables in this dish that it ends up tasting more like a coleslaw. It tastes quite creamy and sweet. But the saba on top tastes quite salty and a bit tough.

The meal total costs $36.50. Overall it is quite a nice and relaxing restaurant. The staffs are quite eager to please. The prices on the menu are quite reasonable. But it is quite sad to see there is not much people dining in this restaurant. Maybe it is still new.

We've walked past the new Dining Edition at Marina Square several times, not knowing exactly what to eat with the variety of choices available now. Finally settling on Hamanoya, an atas-looking restaurant that looked pretty intimidating with the golden mirrors and a dark interior, we decided to give it a shot since cy was feeling generous to splurge and treat us!

Warmly welcomed and served by their polite and courteous service crew, we were impressed with the strong understanding of their menu, knowing what to recommend and introducing their seasonal fresh catch with such fervour. With an appetite for adventure, cy happily told the service staff 'I'll leave it to you to choose our dishes'.

Specialising in robatayaki, or robata in short, it's a trending style of cooking in restaurants, where traditionally seafood and vegetables are slow-grilled over hot charcoal. Subsequently, most dishes that are suitable are also placed on the grill. Slightly different from the usual where diners would seat round the grilling area (like teppanyaki style), this had comfy seats where food was served to you fresh from the grill.

Grilled Squid and Scallop on Stick

First served with hot towels and complimentary amuse-bouche for a taste of their warm hospitality, we were pleasantly surprised with the charcoal-grilled squid and scallop on sticks. Fresh and tender, it was grilled just nice with a slight bounce in the flesh and a light taste of seafood lingering in your mouth. Simple yet nicely done to start off our meal with great anticipation!

These two were their seasonal catch, painstakingly introduced at each table for every diner by their service staff holding a tray of their specials going around. Sparking off a photo-taking frenzy when served, the presentation of it won us over already, impressed by the amount of effort they put into display given the price tag of it. Extremely fresh with its meat coming off the bones easily, it was very fine and tender, without any of the fishy taste that I'm always afraid of for fish dishes. Cooked just nice so that it didn't get too tough, it was served without any sauces and covered only in salt, it gave the natural taste of the fish, with its freshness shining through. Cy is usually picky about his fish, but this managed to satisfy his picky palates!

Chawanmushi ($4.99)

Smooth silken steamed egg, this is one that's pretty hard to go wrong, yet difficult to impress as well. Instead of the usual minced meat for that added texture, this was served with crab meat, topped with yuzu slices. I was expecting the surimi kinda crabmeat stick to go as that's typically what's served with chawanmushi but this gave quality fresh crab shreds, adding a dash of seafood sweetness and the bounce in each mouthful. The citrus twist was also refreshing, adding a subtle fragrance to the dish with a tad of bitter aftertaste. Satisfying cup of warmth indeed!

Okonomiyaki ($7.99)

A classic Japanese dish, a first bite into it got us all nodding with satisfaction. Japanese pancake with mainly cabbage, eggs, Japanese mayonnaise, topped with bonito flakes. The vegetables were cooked soft enough for my liking so that you don't taste the raw juices of it flowing as you bite into it, yet retaining a slight crunch to it.

We loved the generous serving of bonito flakes for that added savouriness and it had just enough mayonnaise to make it sweet and creamy, yet not jelat. A classic dish done well!

Tonkotsu Hotpot ($16.99)

Craving for some hot soup to go with our meal, we decided to go with the Tonkotsu base, another of their all-time favourite hotpot selection. First mouthful got us cringing at the taste of it and exclamations of 'whoa this is super salty!' came along. For ramen lovers, this would taste pretty similar to the tonkotsu ramen soup base. Though good to go with ramen or some rice, it was too salty for it to be taken on its own. The base was rich and flavourful, and blended very well as we dipped rice into little bowls of soup (somewhat like porridge). We expected the flesh of the pork ribs to come off the bones easily, however they were a tad too stiff.

Steamed Clams in Sake ($6.99)

This caught our eye immediately when we were told of the sake in it. First tasting the clams on its own, it was fresh and juicy, without the fishy seafood taste. It wasn't washed very thoroughly though, tasting crunchy sand bits with every mouthful. The broth, however, more than made up for it! Served warm, it was lightly sweet with a tinge of sake taste to it, warming your stomach with comfort soup, yet not overpowering the taste of the fresh clams. Would have been perfect if the clams weren't that sandy!

Assorted Skewer ($12.99)

Fickle and spoilt for choice, we decided to go with the mixed platter with beef, chicken, wings and minced meat skewers. Well marinated, it was grilled to a tender soft perfection and I especially loved the grilled wings with just slightly charred skin for that added fragrance! The accompanying sauce was just right, savoury enough for our liking!

Shishamo ($6.99)

Grilled instead of the usual fried version, it helped retain more juices within and a taste of how fresh it was. I liked the contrast of the softer insides with a slight crisp skin, grilled to perfection. Cy is a big fan of shishamos but he preferred a much crispier skin. For a slightly healthier version, this definitely did not lose out to its fried counterparts!

The grilled ayu $14.99, which belongs to the same salmon family scientifically, tasted brilliant too. With just a sprinkle of salt, this river fish is revived and offers more meat to chow through than the mini-sized mackerel in nasi lemak.

But the same thing cannot be said of the King Crab $14.99. The meat was sorely super-glued to the shell, perhaps because they had been frozen for quite some time.

Grilled corn $3.99 does not sound terribly exciting but these ones are truly sweet with a heady aroma of burnt honey. Meanwhile, those who are afraid of onions should try the Grilled Onions $3.99. Before you start worrying about onion breath, these ones here are slow roasted till tender, and what is left behind is pure caramelized sweetness.

Unlike most Japanese restaurants, the Eggplant $3.99 stays away from miso and is presented as a lightly vinegared, healthy dish topped with dancing bonito flakes. Would prefer if there is more of the chef's special sauce.

Besides the grilled robata and vegetables, there is also a Hi-mono section, which usually includes familiar dried fish such as Kinmedai or Mackerel. Instead of fish, we opted for the Shio-Kouji Chicken $9.99, which came surprisingly as the size of half a spring chicken. The most delectable part was the crispy, slightly charred skin with hardly any grease clinging on the surface. Below is the juicy meat that has been imparted a rich savory depth by the Shio Koji (fermented rice salt marinade).

From the Otsumami Section, items offered are side dishes or deep-fried snacks that one can have as appetiser or simply with a good bottle of sake. Under the canopy of shallots and onions, the Scallop Tataki $15.99 (lightly grilled semi-raw scallops) were spectacularly fresh. For an enhanced sweetness, try dipping it into the shoyu or salt.

The dessert choices are not many and so we swept two out of the three items on the list. The Matcha Trifle ($9) is a boat-shaped dish filled with volcanoes of bite-sized green tea-flavored and plain pancakes around a scoop vanilla ice cream and red bean paste. This resembled a deconstructed upsized dorayaki and highly recommended for sharing

For a super rich indulgence, try the custard pudding $4.99, which is creamy yet dense with a substantial amount of dark brown caramel sauce that perches delicately between the sweet and bitter. The texture is definitely not like any creme caramel or panna cotta.

Just when you think this restaurant may break your bank, prices go with the casual attitude at no more than $20 (Except for crab). Visit any robatayaki at Roppongi and one is prepared to fork out more than hundred for a meal. Here, one get to enjoy not only fresh seafood from Japan but also a bewildering array of comfort dishes such as Tonkotsu pot, Unagi Toji and even Okonomiyaki! Though opened barely for a few months since July, all signs looked positive are clearly hitting all the right chords with the lunchtime crowd.

Introducing The Dining Edition, a new $15M revamped dining enclave at Marina SQ with 16 mid to upmarket international culinary offerings to entice well traveled diners. Hamanoya, one of the 8 new-to-market brand names made its debut into the SG dining scene, offering Traditional Robatayaki 炉端焼き, a 'Fire-side cooking' dining concept originating from northern Japan where food on skewers are slow-grilled over hot charcoal.

Traditionally, Robata restaurants will have diners gathered around a pit of charcoal fire to enjoy food freshly grill over fire on the spot by chefs. However, this concept has been modified to suit the Singaporean preference of dining in aircon comfort. The food is prepared and grilled at the open-concept kitchen and delivered piping hot to the diners table in a speedy manner.

The restaurant is decorated in a modern chic style with clean lines from wooden, glass & metal furnishings and leather lined seating.

The menu. Effort has been put into creating a menu with photos (and descriptions) of every item listed in the menu (accept for drinks) so that diners will have a clear idea of what they are ordering. Most of the seafood and meats are freshly imported from Japan on weekly basis to keep the taste authentic.

Once I've settled down at my seat, the waiting staffs served up a hot towel, ice water (upon request), a complimentary item of the day (scallop & squid skewer). Then, they will bring over a tray of fresh imported seafood-of-the-day (not found in the menu) and explained in detail what's on offer for the day. I've decided to just order from the Ala carte menu. One thing worthy of mention is that the staffs will take orders from you kneeling down so that they can speak with you at eye level...something that I experienced only in Japan! Kudos to the restaurant management who have trained their staffs well.

Now, lets shift the focus to the FOOD.

The complimentary Scallop & Squid skewer. This is lightly marinated with Jap soy sauce and grilled over hot charcoal. The seafood is very fresh and retained its natural flavor.

Grilled Chicken ball with poached egg $4.99++. This was served in a large wooden spoon alongside a perfectly poached egg with runny yolk.

At $5, I expected it to be a smallish serving but I'm wrong, the spoon is pretty huge. The minced chicken meat was well marinated and had generous bits of veggies inside giving it a nice bite. It tastes very good on its own and even better when dipped in the creamy poached egg. Very delish!

Yakikamaboko (Scallop fishcake) $6.99++. This was overcooked, the fishcake is dry and chewy, I couldn't really taste the whole scallop hidden inside...bummer.

Grilled Salmon belly $9.99++. Lightly grilled to perfection without being overcooked, the salmon belly was melt-in-the-mouth goodness retaining its pinkish interior and juiciness. The slightly charred skin added some crisp that completes the divine dish...this is a must try!

Saba Misaki (Grilled Mackerel w/ miso paste) $8.99++. Half slice of a mid size saba grilled till skin is crisp and meat is tender, topped with thick miso paste and chopped scallions. Another well done dish.

I've ordered one portion of udon in plain soup to go with the savory dishes. Inaniwa udon (稲庭うどん) $7.99++ is a thin type of udon variant from Akita Prefecture. It has smooth and springy texture and is a delight to eat with the seaweed in the sweet soy sauce broth.

I had a wonderful dining experience here. Hamanoya offers fabulous food and impeccable service at rather reasonable prices. The 4 savory grilled dishes and a bowl of udon cost me less than $50 including taxes, great value for money! Definitely worthy of multiple visits.
