Sundae Hatter ($6)
$2.50 for marshmallow rainbow ring waffle cone.
$3.50 for a single scoop of cookie and cream ice cream
Sounded quite expansive for a single scoop of ice cream but it was quite a big serving. The waffle cone was lined with a ring of marshmallow coated rainbow colored cereal rings. The cereal was easy to remove from the cone. The waffle cone was light and crisp.

Hatter Street Bakehouse and Cafe is highly accessible as there are many HDB parking lots around the area and a bus stop right in front of the cafe. As the café do not have much seating space, it is usually packed with people. We have waited for about 30 minutes before securing our seats.

Since it has gotten its name after alice in the wonderland, the café was also decorated with scene of the fairytale.

Some of the cakes like brownies are placed in the cake display on the right to catch your attention. After looking, you will be tempted to order more than you need.

“It’s So Kumquet” is basically a lemon tart with sweet cream. It has a buttery, crunchy crust filled with delicious sweet-sour lemon custard surrounded by sweet cream. For sour lover (like me), you will find yourself enjoy this tart greatly.

It’s so Kumquet (SGD$6.00)

YOLO was the new addition to the café cake selection. It consists of cream cheese, chocolate fudge, chocolate ganache, chocolate frosting, chocolate cake and vanilla cake. You will be overdosed with chocolate. The cake was slightly hard, but it was surprising not overly sweet.

YOLO Cake ($7.50, i think)

Whoaffles ($8.90) were their best seller. It was meant to “wow” you with their waffles. Since it’s their best selling items, we have order the waffles with chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce and the Pandan ice-cream with Gula Melaka. We have to wait for about 30 minutes before it was served. After a long wait, we can’t resist eating after smelling how fragrant the waffles were. Thus we started eating the chocolate waffles without waiting for
the Pandan version.

The waffles were crispy with a strong “egg” flavor. The chocolate ice cream was rich in chocolate but tends to be too much after eating for long. For the pandan ice cream, it was aromatic and rich in flavor while the gula Melaka drizzled on top of it was really sweet.

Hatter street serves coffee, ice cream and waffles and a small selection of cakes. Some of the cakes like brownies are placed in the cake display on the right. But fancier cakes like rainbow cake is placed right at the cashier, to catch your attention. They're around $7.50 per slice of cake.

While making payment for my whoaffles, I decided to go for the vibrantly coloured rainbow cake. It wasn't part of the plan but, it was too pretty to say no to!

The top of the rainbow cake looked like it was painted with ink splattered all over the top covered with a glossy almost gelatin light layer. It was truly pretty. The top was mainly cream cheese. But since the cake didn't sit in the cake display which was a fridge, it may have affected the taste of the cake. My fellow gilr friends and I felt that it was abit dry and we didn't finish the cake at all. The cream cheese was dense and too sweet for my liking. The cream cheese did carry a strong sweet fragrance with it.

Upon the first bite into the whoaffles, I knew I was sold! The waffles were so crispy on the edges and yet light and airy on the inside. The waffle itself has a slight sweetness to every bite and had a buttermilk aroma. The pandan ice cream tasted literally like kaya and it was smooth, creamy with a dose of coconut sweetness. The waffles are served with some fruits on the side for decoration and the selection of fruits paired well with the waffle. I choose to go with butterscotch espresso so I had never tried such a sauce before. It was thick, sticky and definitely well-named. The name itself describes exactly how it tasted. The espresso aftertaste was very fitting for the pandan ice cream. Overall, this is my favourite combination!

The blue peppermint ice cream caught me eye at the ice cream counter right at the cashier. They are very generous with their scoops of ice cream and do not be afraid to ask for a taster before settling down on your choice of flavours. The staff are very friendly indeed! The smooth texture of the  peppermint ice cream had tons of little minty chocolate embedded all over.

The ice cream was drizzled with caramel sauce that brought the ice cream to a whole new level. The caramel sauce compensated the ice cream with its fragrance and aroma of caramel sweetness.

Overall :  A great place for really really really good crispy waffles and ice cream. Friendly staff to help you along the way of choosing an ice cream flavour or sauce topping. Not too ulu a location to get to

Opening everyday at 1pm, Hatter Street's main draw is their sweet offerings on the menu, scratched on chalkboard features on the wall. If you're spoilt for choice - you will - here's a handy quick list of their signatures: Smoked sawdust pudding (SGD5), Whoaffles (Pandan/ Vanilla/ Chocolate - SGD8.90), and Choco-tella (SGD6.80). You are forewarned, everything here is made to give you a no holds barred sugar rush and whirls of happiness.

Their whoaffles were surprisingly good... heh, I know, I have very low expectations when they are priced as such, which makes it doubly worth it. They were really crispy on the outside and eggy buttery soft goodness on the inside! I have a soft spot for pandan ice-cream, and it matches the waffles nicely.

Chocolate Hazelnut Tart ($6) - I love a good chocolate hazelnut tart and this was actually pretty good; Chilled, smooth richly yet not too sweet chocolate encased within a crumbly tart shell and topped with a hazelnut. Only gripe I had was that the shell was a tad too moist and could do with a little more stiffness.

Waffle With Pandan Ice Cream & Gula Melaka Sauce ($9.80) - This was a rather unique combination and it piqued our interest quite a fair bit. Crisp waffle (I found it a tad too hard for my liking though) coupled with a scoop of smooth, mildly flavoured pandan ice cream and drizzled over with a distinctive yet not cloyingly sweet gula melaka (palm sugar) sauce. Pleasantly nice local twist to a western dessert I must say.

Will I be back? Most probably, since I don't stay too far off. However Ciel Patisserie might still be my top choice for desserts in the same area as it's cheaper, has less crowds (although seating is even more limited) and quality as a whole is rather similar. Only downside is that they don't do waffles.

Nonetheless, the Vanilla Waffle with Salted Caramel Sauce (SGD$8.90) did not disappoint. The waffle was still crispy on the outside as ever, with the inside so good it melted in the mouth. The vanilla ice-cream was the "icing on the cake" literally, adding a touch of cold sweetness to the piping hot waffle. The salted caramel sauce was deliciously slathered around the waffle for flavor improvisation.

They were warm too when served, though they quickly got cold in a matter of minutes. Chocolate ice cream can never go wrong. Am not a huge fan of vanilla ice cream. But the salted caramel sauce was a good compliment to the waffle and ice cream. Priced at $8.90 per waffle, not too bad! Water was complimentary by the side, self serviced.

The tart is so so for us, but it has a unique sour taste that is very appetitising.

The deco of the place is based on the concept of Alice in Wonderland, dropping into a rabbit hole to find a dash of fantasy here. The owner tries to handpaint the concept here so it looks rather raw but you can appreciate the effort put in.

U can get free water here (self service). Food Service wise is good - friendly and cheerful staff. ;)

Hatter Street is a fairly new cafe nestled in the Kovan neighbourhood. It appears rather out of place amongst the old style kopitiams, neighbourhood shops. But again, I really like the idea of theme cafes sprouting in the sub urban, well at least you dont have to travel all the way to the town just to have a nice hi tea afternoon. Pandan Icecream with Gula Melaka Sauce - $8.90

I have eaten waffles at many places, but I have never seen such a combination before ~ pandan & gula melaka sauce? Really sound very local. I liked that the pandan icecream was subtle and not overwhelming and it was a good match with the gula melaka sauce. Probably tasted like shit if matches with the usual chocolate or caramel sauce. Hahaha

The waffles was also very light, just nice when you have a hearty dinner yet have a itch for something sweet. And the blueberries were sweet too!

This definitely ranks the top few waffles that I will revisit!

Having heard of this cafe for sometime, and wondering about their much-raved about desserts, we finally headed down yesterday after visiting some clients in the vicinity. Being a strictly desserts-only cafe / bakery, it was understandable that they only open from 1.00pm onwards.

Bearing an adorable interior with cats painted onto the walls, and other pretty ornaments strewn around, one quickly forgets that they are in a HDB estate cafe. The girls are friendly and the small cafe had delicious smells of waffles wafting through it.

In the end we decided to try one of their specialities - waffles (named "Whoaffles" herein). I opted for the vanilla one (SGD$8.90) as it came with salted caramel sauce. The waffles were amazing - crispy on the outside and then it just melted on the tongue like molasses. It was not too sweet, but the flavor was enhanced by the creamy vanilla ice-cream and my favorite salted caramel sauce. It was seriously good, we were tempted to get another one

We also tried a Kumquet (lemon) Tart (SGD$6.00) that came with a buttery, crunchy crust filled with a delicious sweet-sour lemony center lined with sweet cream. It was a refreshing dessert that perked up a sleepy and dull weekday afternoon.

The tiny cafe has a whimsical decor theme which sets it apart from the usual industrial themed decor of similar indie cafes. The cafe's name Hatter is derived from The Hatter, a character from the story Alice in Wonderland, who loves having tea parties in the magical wonderland. The menu is written on the whimsical wall murals, no physical menu will be presented at the table.

My Whoaffe with Pandan ice cream & Gula Melaka sauce $8.90. Whoa...the waffle smelt great when it arrived at our table. I was totally blown away by the crispy crust and soft fluffy center of the waffle, and the homemade pandan ice cream tasted heavenly with a very authentic pandan aroma. Thumbs up!

Please do not be deceived by the seeming small portion of the waffles in the pictures. The waffles was really quite big piece, probably the bigger scoop of ice cream contributed to the false impression.

Our drinks Ice Mocha $6.50 and Root beer Float $4.50. They both tasted average, nothing to shout about.

Hatter Street cafe is a nice little place to chill with small group of friends over simple desserts and drinks. They do not serve any sort of savory food or snacks, and no gourmet coffee available here...just really good desserts and regular drinks. Seating space is really tight, so my advice is to avoid weekends peak, and don't come in groups of more than 4pax!

aint the macaroons cute?! hulk and rilakuma! we ordered it just for photos sake initially but it taste not bad! Its quite unique actually! Its shan-zha flavoured macaroon! Its a lil sweet a lil sourish. We also ordered Its so Kumquat tart ($6), Waffle ice cream drizzled with salted caramel and waffle with the chocolate ice cream ($8.90 each). Its so kumquat, really lives up to its name! When you taste it, “its so kumquat” is really the first thing that come to your mind, strong citrus taste and its sourish with tinge of sweetness. Kumquat is similar to like oranges. The tart is good too, texture resembles those of fruit tarts crust. The waffles are the crispy kind and not those crispy on the outside but fluffy in the inside. The taste of waffle drizzled with salted caramel is quite unique. Personally i dont really like salted caramel as i think its too ‘salty’ a flavour for me, but being used a syrup for the waffle its not too bad a choice. It goes pretty well with the waffle and vanilla ice cream. Also, the waffles are top up with fruits! Not many ice cream waffles have it though. It just makes you feel a lil less sinful after eating it doesnt it!

For full review:  http://uniquelious.blogspot.sg/2014/03/hatter-street-bakehouse-cafe.htmlHatter Street Bakehouse & Cafe derives its name from the character Mad Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It is a new addition to Singapore dessert cafe which offers Artisanal desserts and coffee at Hougang heartland.

Came here to eat their waffles. My friend almost walk passby the shop withour realising it. Lucky I was there. I love the decor of the shop. Something like Alice in Wonderland feel. You can even play with the stufff toys there. The wall also shows what they are selling. So I went to the counter to order. Some of the desserts looked really tempting. However I was set on ordering the 'whoa'ffles already. I ordered the 'Whoa'ffles, Pandan Ice Cream Drizzled with Gula Melaka($8.90) and Vanilla Caramel

So I went to the counter to order. Some of the desserts looked really tempting. However I was set on ordering the 'whoa'ffles already. I ordered the 'Whoa'ffles, Pandan Ice Cream Drizzled with Gula Melaka($8.90) and Vanilla Caramel Dream($3.20).

The drink came first. It had hints of vanilla and slight caramel. But tasted like normal black tea.

Finally the 'whoa'ffles came. It looks really nice. So picture worthy. The waffles were crispy and fluffy. The gula melaka was really delicious. Just the right amount of sweetness. Pandan ice cream had a slightly familar tasted. A little like the Lapis Sagu(9 layered kueh) from beganwan solo. Somehow I like everything more when I taste them seperately then together. But overall it still a lovely dish.
Will be back for more of their 'whoa'ffles!

Hatter Street is a whimsical cafe located in a quiet HDB estate in Hougang. This might be the best waffle I've ever had so far. The crispy waffles were pretzel-like salted, which balances out the sweetness of the Gula Melaka. The blueberries also helped to tone down on the sweetness. A plus point, because the waffles don't feel too rich or heavy to finish. The Pandan Ice Cream is heaven - reminds me of those old school pandan kueh. Very uniquely Singaporean; a very good fusion dessert! On the down side, the waffles weren't exactly hot when served.
