Hifumi is a cheerful new Japanese Restaurant on the top floor of Plaza Singapura's newly opened extension Atrium at Orchard. The restaurant offers a wide variety of Japanese set meals with rice and miso soup. The highlight is the inclusion of unlimited visits to the self service appetizer bar. When it first opened, free flow of hot and cold non alcoholic beverages from the self serve drinks bar was included in the price of the set meal. Now one needs to top up $1.90++ for unlimited access to the
It is obvious that the restaurant is understaffed but if the waiters and waitresses were overworked, kudos to them for not showing it. They managed the queue and seated the customers efficiently. My friend was happy with the Saba Fish Set $11.90++. The Pork Tonkatsu Set was also great value at $12.90++. A nice touch was the provision of a mini mortar and pestle for me to grind the sesame seeds to add to the tonkatsu sauce. The chef turned on the heat too high so the tonkatsu was not evenly coloured and parts of it were a bit dry. The cabbage could also have been shredded more finely. However, at these prices it is unrealistic to expect fine dining. The food quality is above average and comparable to other popular Japanese restaurant chains like Ichiban Boshi and the bentos at Sakae Sushi. As it was 30 minutes to the time for last orders when we had a table, some of the popular items in the appetizer bar were already depleted - such as the cheese fondue, marinated jellyfish and agedashi tofu. I was happy they replenished the petit chawanmushi, and helped myself to the rice crackers, eggplant, sliced pumpkin salad and stewed radish.
Hifumi is a great place for lunch or dinner, and 90% of the rice sets are priced lower than similar sets at Ichiban and Sakae. Worth a few more visits to try the other sets as it is a matter of time before they adjust their menu prices to reflect demand.
