When it first opened, free flow of hot and cold non alcoholic beverages from the self serve drinks bar was included in the price of the set meal. Now one needs to top up $1.90++ for unlimited access to the drinks bar which is still great value.

It is obvious that the restaurant is understaffed but if the waiters and waitresses were overworked, kudos to them for not showing it. They managed the queue and seated the customers efficiently. My friend was happy with the Saba Fish Set $11.90++. The Pork Tonkatsu Set was also great value at $12.90++. A nice touch was the provision of a mini mortar and pestle for me to grind the sesame seeds to add to the tonkatsu sauce. The chef turned on the heat too high so the tonkatsu was not evenly coloured and parts of it were a bit dry. The cabbage could also have been shredded more finely. However, at these prices it is unrealistic to expect fine dining. The food quality is above average and comparable to other popular Japanese restaurant chains like Ichiban Boshi and the bentos at Sakae Sushi. As it was 30 minutes to the time for last orders when we had a table, some of the popular items in the appetizer bar were already depleted - such as the cheese fondue, marinated jellyfish and agedashi tofu. I was happy they replenished the petit chawanmushi, and helped myself to the rice crackers, eggplant, sliced pumpkin salad and stewed radish.

Hifumi is a great place for lunch or dinner, and 90% of the rice sets are priced lower than similar sets at Ichiban and Sakae. Worth a few more visits to try the other sets as it is a matter of time before they adjust their menu prices to reflect demand.

the staff in the restaurant were really RUDE. Which staff would clear off the tray without even asking customers if they would still want the food? Right now, my last friend that arrived, still have at least half a bowl of rice and thankfully, she doesn't want it anymore and the staff just come and clear without asking. What if she still wanted it? What kind of service is this? Yes, I know it's alright 10pm+ and you guys want to go home. However, being in the service line, isn't "customers always first?" Not only did she just clear the 2 tray outside, I was staring at her most of the time looking at what she was doing. One of the menu was some-what wet (probably due to the cold water) and she just wipe the water on our table before throwing the menu to another table! Is this what a staff should even be doing in front of customers? After clearing the outside tray, she came back and cleared the tray opposite me. Somehow, I've no idea why she did not bother to clear my tray. Maybe she knew, I was staring at her or maybe she don't. Well, I'm not sure.

The Japanese restaurant flaunts a mostly wooden facade and pine wood furniture, reminiscent of ancient Japanese architecture. Despite the dinner crowd flocking to try the new eatery, we were ushered to our seats in quick order and shown the menu which featured various set meals categorized into groups such as Healthy, Pork etc. Each set meal comes with a bowl of rice and miso soup each, as well as unlimited visits to the appetizer bar offering a range of popular snacks like the Shrimp Chawanmushi, Japanese Rice Cracker with Crab Sauce, Tofu Gratin with Japanese Pepper and many more. At $11.90 for my choice of the Baked Chicken Set, it seems very much like a good deal! Diners can also opt to top up an additional $2 for free flow drinks, choosing/mixing from a list of hot/cold beverages.

My order of the Baked Chicken Set gave me mixed feelings when it was served. The presentation was lacking, with so much paper wrapped around not all that much chicken. But I was definitely won over by the wafts of aroma from the sauce - I'm guessing a wicked combination of sesame oil and some light Japanese spices to add that zesty touch. I would strongly recommend drizzling the sauce over the rice for better flavour.

At $18 per pax, Hifumi certainly let me walk away with a much value-for-money experience. Definitely looking forward to try the other dishes in the future.

Katsu Curry Set - The Pork Cutlet was lean and tasty. The curry gravy was expected to be thick but it was a bit watery as compared to some Japanese curries served at other restaurants. Nevertheless it tasted good but would be nicer if the gravy was thicker. ($13.99)

Maybe because it was newly opened but the staff were all extremely inefficient. There were so many empty and uncleared seats and the queue was 15 tables long! So frustrating to see that happening!Where we were queuing, there was a glass panel where we could look in and see the chefs preparing the food. I really don't know why they do that unless they are as clean and efficient as Ding Tai Feng. Seriously, after staring at them preparing the food I wasn't really impressed and decided not to look

Where we were queuing, there was a glass panel where we could look in and see the chefs preparing the food. I really don't know why they do that unless they are as clean and efficient as Ding Tai Feng. Seriously, after staring at them preparing the food I wasn't really impressed and decided not to look anymore in case I lose my appetite.

I saw how the frying was done so I avoided ordering all the fried stuff. The lady used her gloved hands to clean the sink and then just put her hand under running water for like 1 sec before going back to preparing food. Omg.

Bara Chirashi (Mixed Raw Fish Set) S$17.99

This is one of the worst Japanese meals I ever had. The prawn was NOT FRESH at all. The salmon was not cold and it wasn't tasty. Why serve raw fish when you can't keep the items fresh? It is really quite disgusting.

I would rather pay S$12.99 for the same set (but a whole lot more delicious) at MOF without all the appetizers! You know how sometimes when you eat something and you know whether this dish was prepared with love and passion? This had nothing. This was like very bad fast food.

To summarise, the only good aspects about this restaurant is the potato salad and the cheap drink bar (S$1.99 for free flow). Otherwise, nothing seemed worthy of another visit.

You've been warned! Now I experience truly for myself that long queues doesn't mean excellent must-try food. And the total bill was S$44.70. Totally not worth it.
