Ala carte style. Expensive but comes with fresh food ingredients and refillable soup base.

What's nice?
1. Laksa Soup Base - Highly recommended!!
2. Porridge Soup Base - Recommended but the refill is mainly water!
3. Homemade Prawn Balls - Fresh and bouncy. However, I think they made the prawn balls smaller!

4. Marinated beef and pork - soft and tender!
5. Siew Mai - nice! Cook when only you are ready to eat immediately.
6. Pho - smooth and nice but they increase price!

Staff were efficient and polite. Good service!

Only downside is the price. Too expensive.

Tried the tom yam soup base ($4.80) which tastes ok initially but is slightly salty after cooking all the food. I would still prefer the herbal soup base which I tried the last time. Love the fried beancurd skin (as shown in 2nd pic). One does not have to cook it for too long, just dip the the hot soup for a while and can eat it. It is really yummy!

Both the jumbo pork ball and beef meat are handmade and taste good. However, the beef ball takes kinda long to cook. To avoid eating raw food, it will be good to cut the beef ball into half before putting it in the soup.

My favourite steamboat restaurant since I hate getting all sticky and smelling bad like those at Bugis. You get to make your own sauce using sesame oil, chilli oil, spring onion, leek, vinegar, their signature soya sauce and more.I would say a wide range of ingredients especially seafood. Great ambience, spacious and good service from the helpful crew. Not your regular steamboat place.

Love dining at Jpot as there is a huge selection of food and I love to mix my own sauce! For the sauce, I will usually mix lots of fried garlic with chili (the bright red and slightly sourish type). Yes, you will get bad breath eating so much garlic but it is worth it as the fried garlic really good! Ordered the herbal soup which is kinda tasty (not sure if msg is added though). As for the food, I will highly recommend one to try the fried beancurd skin, the yam and the fishballs.

The JPot steamboat concept isn't very different from Imperial Treasure. Like Imperial Treasure, you get a whole bunch of condiments (sesame oil, chilli oil, soya sauce, chopped spring onions, peanut sauce and so on) to mix and blend your personalized dipping sauce (the fried crispy garlic is awesome!), and the soup bases incur a cost of their own. Also, the ingredients are equally fresh at both steamboat places, and the pricing is about the same as well. However, while I felt that Imperial Treasure wasn't worth the extra dollars, JPot seems a lot more value-for-money.

Thing is, JPot is a lot more adapted to the local palate than Imperial Treasure. The varied soup bases, including but not limited to bak kut teh, laksa, tom yum, duck with salted vegetable, silky porridge and XO fish head are all already local favourites well-loved by Singaporeans. It's like going to your favourite laksa stall and customizing it entirely to your every whim. Except that you get to do that to not just your favourite laksa stall, but your favourite porridge place and bak kut teh eatery, and so on. It is the unique yet familiar soup bases that justify its higher pricetag.

Another thing about JPot is that their steamboat is portioned for 1 person, in order to give each diner their very own pot to deal with as they wish.

Since we like to share, we had:

1) JPot Superior Broth ($5.80): mix of both pork and chicken bones stewed for a very classic base stock. The lengthy simmering of this soup meant that it was already sweet enough to drink from the first serving. Because of its basic flavours, this was the one stock that went with everything

2) Laksa ($4.80) is one of my favourites, though not everything went with it. This was rich, spicy and creamy, extremely slurpworthy

3) Silky Porridge ($3.80), a very watery and smooth rice gruel that was most pleasant and comforting. The rice grains have all been sifted out so this doesn't ever get burnt, right to the last drop. This has enough flavour to also eat from the get-go

4) Wanton ($5): goes well with the superior broth. A lot of times, how good your steamboat ends up depends on whether you pair the right ingredients with the correct stock. Some ingredients just clash with the stock. I will state which ingredients go well with which stock. Of course, this is all based on my peculiar tastebuds and preferences

5) Marinated Chicken ($4.50): juicy and succulent. We love that a quail's egg was given with every meat to coat it. I think oil was used to marinate this for that smooth slippery texture. This went with all of the stocks

6) Marinated Beef ($4.50): reeked of artificial tenderizer taste, we didn't finish this. We might try the wagyu instead the next time

7) Hand-made Fish Balls ($4.50): bouncy and roughly textured, with a most pleasant bite. This went well with the superior broth and laksa soup

8) Mushroom Combination ($12.80) with enoki, shitake, shimeiji, king oyster, white oyster, was brilliant paired with everything

9) Japanese Beancurd ($2): smooth and wobbly and smooth, went well with the laksa and superior broth. Especially the laksa because its plainess contrasted well with the richness of the laksa

We wanted to go have steamboat, but not somewhere that will be too hot. So we decided on Jpot hot pot. They do have set lunch and dinner, and the ingredients given were based on which amount of set lunch or dinner you ordered. And for the soup base, you are able to choose from a few selection by them. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. Definitely a good place for steamboat with your friends and family!

Each person has an individual stove of which they can choose from seven different types of soup bases: JPot Superior Broth, Bak Kut Teh, Herbal, Laksa, Silky Porridge, Tom Yum and Vegetarian. The other soup bases were good but the Superior Soup Broth was especially outstanding. The Bak Kut Teh soup, on the other hand, was less than satisfying and way too peppery when boiled long enough. All soups can be re-filled as many times as you like.

So you need to ask the waitress to add more stock for you. The seafood was very fresh, so you go for quality rather than quantity. Overall, standard was good. Service wise very good as they served you promptly.

Steamboat aka hotpot...jpot is part of Jumbo seafood and that explains why the seafood we have at jpot is so fresh.

We had the superior broth and when we taste it without ingredients, it was simply sweet and delicious. After adding the ingredients like prawns, meat, vegetable, the soup started to taste a bit salty as the seasonings used to marinate the meat goes into the soup. The soup can be re-filled so just get the waiter/waitress ti fill it up when you want more soup. There is a station for you to mix your own sauces.

When our set arrived, it looked as if we will still be hungry after consuming all the food but surprisingly, we were very full when we finished up the plates. Quality is a thumbs up. If you prefer quality over quantity, this is a place for you.

Do leave behind some room in your stomach for the dessert because the snow ice dessert is not bad...cooling after a hotpot.

The restaurant is very clean and the service is good as the waiters/waitresess come to you as soon as you calls out to them.

This is a place for good quality food and good service.

Chinese New Year is here as well as the season for festive mass meals like hot-pots and yusheng. But unlike in the recent past, families that traditionally dine at home have taken to restaurants for a fuss-free reunion dinner. FreshGrads checks out JPot at VivoCity as a choice for the yearly reunion dinner.

THE FOOD:

Each person has an individual stove of which they can choose from seven different types of soup bases: JPot Superior Broth, Bak Kut Teh, Herbal, Laksa, Silky Porridge, Tom Yum and Vegetarian.

The other soup bases were good but the Superior Soup Broth was especially outstanding. The Bak Kut Teh soup, on the other hand, was less than satisfying and way too peppery when boiled long enough. All soups can be re-filled as many times as you like.

There is a wide range of sauces and suggestions for mixing them. We liked all the suggestions for mixtures and particularly liked the sweet garlic chilli sauce just as it is. There is only one sauce bowl per person in the table setting but servers will promptly dish out more when requested.

Now, finally to the mains. What JPot offers other steamboat outlets probably do as well but what makes it stand out is the amount of thought put into preparing the food and its quality. We felt that steamboat has never been so meticulously prepared at JPot. The well-thought presentation of their raw food and the interactivity required really made steamboat more fun. For one, fish meat is presented in a tube form and diners are encouraged to go the do-it-yourself way. For the lazy, ask and the servers will do it for you.

Quality is a highlight at JPot. There is nowhere else in Singapore you can get high-quality meats for hot-pots, such as Sri Lankan crabs, Wagyu ribeye and Kurobuta pork and more. As promised (and probably guaranteed by the price you are paying), the scallops are fresh, succulent and sweet, as were the Red Garoupa fish fillet, and only king-sized prawns were served. Spinach Tofu was pretty bland but passable when dipped in their delicious sauces. Beef the way we liked it - very thinly sliced. And they weren't kidding when they said Live Sri Lankan Crab. The crab was so fresh that it was still moving when we put it into the soup despite it being already chopped up. However, the Sri Lankan part about the crab was downsized quite a bit. And as mentioned, this is one of the few places you can find quality Wagyu Ribeye and Kurobuta Pork for steamboat.

JPot also offer a limited Dim Sum selection, which includes Shrimp & Wood Fungus Dumplings, Fried Fish Skin and Fried Wanton among others.

The set lunch is a pretty good deal starting from $9.80. Ala carte ordering tends to add up to more than you expect to pay. Be prepared to pay almost twice you have to pay for the typical Bugis street style steamboat for the food quality and hygiene, air-conditioned location, and ambience. Otherwise, it may be better sticking to the cheaper alternative.

THE MOOD:

JPot offers a nice harbourfront view of Sentosa and the construction it is undergoing right now. FreshGrads suggest you make reservations for the limited seats with a view though. Reservations could be made online at their website.

By its affiliation with Jumbo, it is no surprise the decor within is more classy than your typical road-side hot-pot restaurant. We liked the well-spaced out seating but are disheartened by the lack of communal dining tables - our group of six was assigned to two separate four-man tables. The food may be good albeit the steeper pricing, but if they run out of tables big enough to accommodate your family, it might be better staying home or dining elsewhere. After all, it is reunion dinner. Otherwise, JPot is a good choice for a hot-pot treat.
