I went at the lunch hour, where there are only snacks, brunch, desserts and drinks available. Most of the brunch items are sandwich items less a sausage roll containing a Bratwurst sausage. There are two items that are slightly different, but those are only available on weekends. Since I love my mushrooms I chose the Swiss Mushroom with Melted Cheese on Toasted Foccacia. A mouthful to order, but it is a simple sandwich that had Mushroom and a cream-based sauce under a layer of melted cheese. This essentially tasted a bit pizza-ish with the melted cheese being gooey and such, literally covering the whole top of the toast. Part of the mushroom’s earthy taste had also been neutralised with the sauce, good for those who diskike strong tasting mushrooms. The Foccacia was toasted to a crisp and pretty enjoyable. The fries were a bit off the scale as it came slightly cold though still retaining the crispiness. It was salted just fine, and would have totally hit the mark if it was warmer.

Classic French Vanilla Creme Brulee was indeed smooth and custardy inside, but the sugar coating seemed a tad too thick and hardened as the first scoop felt more like cracking an egg shell with the coating ending up in pieces like broken glass. The taste of Vanilla also seemed pretty minimal here, but other than that it was definitely a good plate of Creme Brulee.

Dropped by Lola's in the afternoon and was looking for a snack or some desserts. A pity they don't allow takeaways for their panna cotta, as I was looking forward to try it. I got the carrot cake for $6 a slice as it looks good. It was placed in a nice box and paper bag. Taste-wise, the carrot cake was alright, not heavenly but was a pleasant snack as it wasn't too sweet; prefer to eat it chilled.

I was deciding what to order from the menu and the staff recommended me the crab pasta, which he said was one of the most popular mains among customers; so I decided to give it a try. The sauce is tomato cream sauce - which was something I didn't mind because I'm not a fan of cream sauce, however, the sauce overwhelmed the taste of the whole pasta, and on a whole, the pasta was rather average, wouldn't recommend it.

This is a new cafe within walking distance from Kovan MRT, located just beside Charcoal Thai. I'm glad that I gave it a try. I loved the caramelized banana earl grey tart - slight earl grey taste and the tart is topped with crunchy pistachio bits - this is made on the spot and not on display. However, at $4.50, the tart is too small, not enough to share.

A glass door grants view of the entire restaurant interior. Utilitarian wooden tables with metal garden chairs for most part, with a rattan frame sofa right by the door for customers waiting in queue. What stood out most for me was the rows of empty black square frames on the wall that just gave that touch of chic to the entire place.

Herb-crusted Fish and Chips - $12.90
2 deep-fried breaded fillets served with a side of truffle fries and a pesto mayo dipping sauce.
Loved the fact that the fish of choice was haddock instead of the usual mushy dory. A richer, finer taste and less flaky. Herb mixed into the bread crumbs gave the fried fish a gorgeous speckled colour. The truffle fries were a tad of a letdown without much flavour.

Wild Swimmer Crab Pasta - $14.90
Spaghetti served with crab meat and a tomato cream sauce. The italian noodles were al dente enough, but the crab meat was so mashed that any taste of crab was overwhelmed by the tomato cream sauce. It could have been tuna for all I know. So taste wise, not quite satisfied for me.

A meal just wouldn't be complete without dessert, and at Lola's, there is quite a selection to choose from. Tarts, cakes, brownies and even exotic flavoured mousse concocted from stout.

Caramelized Banana Earl Grey Tart with Pistachio Topping - $3.50
I picked the Earl Grey Tart. At $3.50, it was about the price of a Frozen Cheese Tart from Glace or Flor Patisserie and I would expect similar quality. Flavour wise, it did pique my interest. The pale undertones of Earl Grey rounded out the sweetness of the caramelized banana slices. A contrast in textures of the crackling banana and soft mousse of the Earl Grey was great too. My only gripe - the crust which just came across as those pre-made ones you can find at any supermarket.

All in all, a good quiet dining experience in the Heartlands. I would venture a second trip, if just for brunch and a second go at the very interesting dessert menu.

I generally like this cafe enough to know that I would make another trip down so. It is cost-friendly and the desserts aren’t too bad! I have heard of a unique wasabi dessert which I cant wait to try it out.

Lunch and dinner is also served in this cafe! So if you are looking out for somewhere new to head to this Sunday, you might like to give Lola’s Cafe a try!
