Homemade Iced Lemon Tea - $5.50

Homemade iced lemon tea which really lived up to its name! Love how refreshing it was especially on the scorching Sunday I went.

Break Of Dawn - $22

(Pork bratwurst + Pork bacon + Cherry Tomatoes + Breakfast Potatoes + Scrambled Eggs with Chives + Mesclun salad with almond + Lemon Vinaigrette + Double Orange Salad + Sourdough)

This, my friends, is definitely one of the most scrumptious breakfasts I've had. I mean, it's comparable to the one from AnthesisThis, my friends, is definitely one of the most scrumptious breakfasts I've had. I mean, it's comparable to the one from Anthesis, just that it's not as expensive. Variety and portion wise, it was abundant and I was so stuffed by the time I managed to scrape it all off my plate. However, taste-wise, I have my doubts. The pork bacon was waaaaaaay too salty and the scrambled eggs were a little dry. Thumbs up to the pork bratwurst though!

Salmon Florentine - $20

(Norwegian smoked salmon + Sauteed baby spinach + Poached eggs + Homemade hollandaise sauce + Toasted brioche)

One of the top favorites! The eggs were perfectly poached while the hollandaise sauce was delicious with the perfect creaminess. Smoked salmon was great too.

Paddle pop cake - $9

We were really intrigued by the looks of this cake and since we were craving for something sweet, we decided to go for this. The cakes at Maison Ikokku are sadly, not baked in-house. I really liked the cake batter though I couldn't taste much of the paddle pop flavoring.

Service:

Service was rather slow that day, but okay it was pretty crowded when we went. Do make reservations before heading there because it can get really packed on weekends!

Atmosphere:

The cafe was rather small so it might feel a little claustrophobic if you're planning to go there in a big group. Other than that, I loved the vibe it exuded and it was perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

------------------------------

I was supposed to post this post weeks back, but it has been sitting in my drafts since forever and I finally had time to edit it. I finally finished my midterms today (hehe my one and only) and presentation so I finally have time to take a little breather.

Met my dear tako for lunch on a fateful Sunday and as usual, we spent our day lazing around and chilling indoors because the sun was a killer.

My friend, Hannah, introduced this cool place to me! As I went in the evening, I couldn't take a good shot of the exterior, hence I used this image instead, from google maps.
What can I say about this place - I love its coffee! Honestly, I like coffee which is light and not too acidic.

Well, this place has one of the best coffee I ever tasted, at least for people like me, who just wants a cup of nice, smooth coffee brew without having to feel so sour at the end of the day. This is their menu! Just a one page food menu. But their specialty is coffee! So my aim was not to be so fixated on what they have to offer on food.

Hannah says they serve good sandwiches. But I'm on a diet (ackhem), so this time, I ordered salad instead. (What? Seriously? Salad?)

The salad turned out to be WONDERFUL, okay? We had the Caprese Salad ($16). I loved the mozzarella and everything else about the salad. It was light on the palate and was delicious.

Hannah has a sweet tooth, I realised. Haha. So we ordered a Molten Lava Cake ($7.50) and a Red Velvet Cake ($9). If you only can choose one cake, order the molten lava cake if you're up for a thick, rich taste. It was very nice.

The red velvet cake was nice too, but I would still choose the molten lava over it anyday. I felt the taste texture of the white chocolate flakes on top of the cake could have been further improved, while the cake itself was fluffy and light. The amount of cream was just right too.

I seriously thought that the decorations on the plate were mustard and ketchup, under the cafe's lighting. HAHA. Of course it's not, hello! Its raspberry sauce and something else, I forgot.

Hannah had the Signature MI Latte ($6), which turned out to be a very good choice. Halfway through the drink, the foam was still in the cup and did not dissolve. That's some nice barista skill right there.

Here's my Brew V60 Pour Over Coffee ($6)! I ordered it over the counter, where there were 2 flavours (Ethopia Konga and Guatemala San Antonio) for choosing. I went with the popular choice, Ethopia Konga (and now I do understand why it IS the popular choice). It was very smooth - ever have coffee just glide down your throat nicely? This is THE ONE which will totally satisfy your coffee craving. It has a floral aroma and the coffee has a strawberry cocoa finish.

Because I loved this so much, I looked around the shop and saw they had the V60 coffee machine up for sale too - but the total cost (filters, machine, etc) came up to about a few hundred bucks. I rather travel here for a cuppa and to chill out!

It is really nice to go to a place and find something you really like - which in this instance, I did. I really like this coffee and only have good things to say about it. Well, okay, the only bad thing is that the cup is not big enough for me! hahaha. Wish I could have more

Did I also mention they have a bar on the second floor? Maybe next time I will check that out too!

Directions:

Take train to Bugis MRT Station (Go to Downtown Line), go up exit C. Walk along the road of Rochor road (You will see Bugis Junction right in front of you). But instead of going to Bugis Junction, turn right and go down North Bridge road all the way. When you reach Masjid Sultan Mosque (which will be on your right hand side), turn right and walk further down. It should take you about 10 minutes (max) to get there from Bugis MRT Station.

Here's how I got to the cafe (see red highlighted path).

I also had the Smoked Salmon and Avocado Sandwich (SGD$16.00) with wholemeal bread. The bread was crispy, and the dill sour cream was thickly distinctive in flavor. The smoked salmon was springy in texture and buttery avocado added to the overall explosive texture of the scrumptious sandwich.

The Buddy had a slice of Chocolate Fudge Cake (SGD$5.50) - a rich slice of chocolate heaven - a little hint of stickiness and solid fluffiness all made of bittersweet chocolate - a delightful indulgence anytime. The chocolate flakes sprinkled atop adds a tinge of crunchiness to the delectable dessert.

When I first heard about Maison Ikkoku, the first thing that came to my mind was the manga and anime series of the same name. The lifestyle destination has nothing to do with the popular Japanese romantic comedy; it’s a cozy shop house with a café on the ground floor and bar on level 1. There used to be a menswear boutique stocking indie labels but unfortunately it ceased operations in February this year.
The café is quite small; reservations recommended to avoid disappointment. Décor is a mix of vintage industrial. We would have loved to sit around and chat, but there was a queue outside, hence we left as soon as we were done eating. Its self-service here (no service charge), you’ll have to fetch your own water but food will be brought to your table.
Maison Ikkoku is well known for their quality coffee. G was pleased with her fragrant and not overly sweet Caramel Latte ($7).
The café is also popular for brunch items. G’s Instagram-worthy French toast with Caramelized Bananas ($15), arrived quickly despite the crowd. Inch thick brioche French toast with cinnamon soaked up the mouth-watering home-made caramel with sea salt sauce, with a dollop of sour cream and toasted walnuts. I suspect sour cream was used in place of traditional whipped cream to balance out the sweetness; however, the combi didn’t sit quite well with us.
Twisted French Omelette ($16) with spinach, chives, bell peppers and mild cheddar was not spectacular, but nonetheless appealing. Tangy cherry tomatoes, breakfast potatoes, salad with roasted almonds and sourdough toast complete this hearty dish. My only gripe? Potatoes were cold.
My slice of summer! The sight of rainbow cake never fails to brighten my day. We struggled to finish this massive Rainbow Cake ($10) which was served on a chilled plate. At the first bite, the cake was a little rough, but the moistness came through as we chewed. Texture-wise, it’s dense and slightly doughy. Unfortunately, there was lingering artificial aftertaste. Wished I had ordered the salted caramel cake instead.

Besides the range of coffees, Maison Ikkoku serves home-brewed tea as well. I, myself is not a huge tea lover, but those who had their teas, raved it. For coffee lovers, you're in for a big treat. You can have your coffee brewed in one of the seven methods, namely Chemax, syphon, ice drip, V60 pour over, woodneck, eva solo and aeropressz. Don't know which roast to go with? Fret not, simply approach the friendly baristas and I bet they are more willing to give some professional advices.

Recently, we were there again to celebrate one of our friend's birthday, and guess what? The friendly staff at Maison Ikkoku even dimmed the lights for a few moments and sang the birthday song with us. How lovely was that. Their S'more pie is a huge favourite amongst us. Soft and chewy marshmallow on a bed of rich, bitter-sweet chocolate is something that you would not stop at one mouthful.

Some of the recommended signature cakes include Blueberry Cheese Pie and Chocolate Banana Cake. The former was slightly too moist and lumpy, but the latter was a sinful combination of rich and flavourful. If you love dense cake, go for the chocolate banana cake, you won't be disappointed. Unfortunately, red velvet was out of stock the night we visited, but trust me, they got one of the best out there.

wish i could have tried some desserts, but we were stuffed after our brunch haha. they had a rainbow cake!!!! i wanna try that!!

because i already had an overdose of eggs that weekend, i decided against the range of eggs benedicts/florentines etc even though they sounded so delicious! there were so many of them to choose from that got me all excited ^^ instead, i opted for the french toast with fresh berries ($18), and it was absolutely delicious
two thick slices of fluffy toast, drizzled with a generous amount of maple syrup ^^ i loved the berries that came with it as well! they were so naturally sweet and not undermined by the maple syrup at all! you might want to ask them to leave out the cream though. it was thick and grainy (something like icing sugar?) and way too sweet.

yummy iced chocolate ($7)!
kinda pricey but it's such a big glass! quite worth the price for its rich flavour, without being too thick (if you don't like the italian chocolate kind).

sis got the salmon florentine ($18). it looked a little sparse and sad on the plate, but the taste more than made up for it!! it contained a delightfully flowy yolk, and i especially loved the homemade hollandaise sauce!! can't figure out what the special ingredient was, yi suggested garlic (?), but it stood out from your typical sauce and was soooo delicious!

perhaps a healthier option to the above dish (without hollandaise - omg i just found out how unhealthy it is >< and it's my fav brunch dish!!!) would be the smoked salmon scrambled ($18). i actually quite liked this dish as well! (: i love scrambled eggs ^^ this kinda looks a bit more like an omelette, but i guess the good thing was that it's not so

other sis had the hangover omelette ($16) - real comfort food ;) the omelette was oozing with cheeseeeee. yummy! and i love their salad here
the dressing was delicious and it came with sliced roasted almonds which lent both a crunch and nutty flavour which i love! (:

mom ordered the croque madame ($15), which turned out differently from what we thought it would be! it seemed more de-constructed, but no less tasty ;) the bread crust was a little tough (i had SUCH a hard time trying to cut through it -.-), but other than that, it was yummy!

I love my entire experience in Maison Ikkoku and I see myself back there very often! I would have to admit that getting to the place takes quite a bit of walking from Bugis MRT and if you drive, parking can be quite a problem. But the taste of the cakes there? Definitely worth it!

Prices for cakes range from $6 onwards, not really cheap but I am definitely willing to shelve it out.

Rainbow Cake ($10) – My very first slice of rainbow cake and a good one! This cake made me so happy, it was as though it dropped down from heaven. The layers of vanilla sponge were light and fluffy – aptly accompanied by the cream cheese frosting. I loved how the rainbow dots added crunch and the generous side of chocolate and strawberry sauces brought in different flavours for the cake.

This is a picture taken from the counter of Maison Ikkoku bar! Spot all the fresh ingredients and bottles and bottles of spirits! This bar has no menu as all cocktails are customised according to your requests – a really cool “mixology” concept. You just have to inform the bartender on your preferred taste for your cocktail as well as your choice spirit – be it spicy, salty, refreshing, fruity etc., the end product will be one that tickles your tastebuds with pleasure and stretches your imagination while dissecting the layers of taste. A wonderful and clever concept if you ask me!

Maison Ikkoku is tucked away shophouses near Arab St -you can get lost pretty easily amongst the rows and rows of shophouses so if it your first time there you may want to use a map! The cafe seems to have Japanese influence (hence, its name) but there are not many traces of this in their food served. They specialise in coffee & cakes, but also serve a small range of pastas and salads, as well as a decent sandwich menu. The interior of the cafe is really cosy, but unfortunately the space is terri

The cafe seems to have Japanese influence (hence, its name) but there are not many traces of this in their food served. They specialise in coffee & cakes, but also serve a small range of pastas and salads, as well as a decent sandwich menu.

The interior of the cafe is really cosy, but unfortunately the space is terribly limited!! They do have alfresco seats but I wouldn't suggest sitting there in the day, it can get really warm
Ordering and payment is at the counter, (prices are all nett!!), the food is served to you, and iced water is self service.

On the day that we went, the sandwiches were out of stock (the ingredients hadn't been ordered, i think?), so we were left the pasta and salad choices. We ordered a Nicoise Salad ($14) and a Pasta of the Day, which ranges from $14-16, but the Mushroom Pomodoro we ordered was $15. The pasta and salads came with complimentary drink of value $5 or lesser, and any more than that will require a top up. We ordered an Iced Vanilla Latte ($7) and a Cappucino ($5).

The mushroom pomodoro was mediocre -the tomato chunks inside provided a nice texture, unfortunately, the sauce wasn't creamy enough. As a result, it had a tart tomato flavour that was offset by the cheese -but we rather that the sauce was creamy enough to be eaten alone. The mushrooms were sidelined in this dish -I wish it had a bit more focus, after all, it's a MUSHROOM pomodoro. But on the whole, pasta was well cooked and definitely decent!

Surprisingly, the Nicoise salad was the show-stealer (it wins the coffee hands down!!!). Served with a generous dollop of tuna, perfectly cooked eggs, fresh greens and a handful of anchovies -this salad is perfect. The dressing wasn't too sour, yet it was tangy enough to be a refreshing dish good enough to be eaten on its own. The ratio of the ingredients was perfect and I can safely say that the $14 is well worth spent.

The cappuccino was slightly disappointing. The acidity of the coffee did not sit so well with me and on the whole I felt that drinking the coffee just wasn't "smooth" like I'd liked it. I suppose it's the milk and the steaming of it, but I wouldn't say that this was up to my expectations at all.

The vanilla latte was even more disappointing. The milk and the coffee did not go well at all, the coffee tasted sharp and slightly (?)sour in my opinion. The sugar and sugar syrup is self service so you can customise the sweetness of the coffee to your liking. On the whole, the vanilla latte did not have the luscious, smooth taste I was hoping for, and the aroma fell flat.

The cafe has a magazine rack too -a very homey touch.

On the whole, I would say go for their salads and maybe their hot coffees. We didn't have a chance to try their sandwiches but we'll definitely be back to give it a try. The cakes are hits and misses, I've been told. I'll be back to try more, though. This cafe may be largely hit and misses, but its definitely home to hidden finds. Prices are also reasonable and they serve breakfast items (which end around 11.30 so you gotta go early!)

The Signature MI Latte pales in comparison though. I thought the coffee taste wasn't strong enough and my mum mentioned it was bitter. I've to agree with her as I had to add sugar, which I usually don't at cafes.

I was constantly attracted by the table next to us as they were having eggs benedict! My favourite! I was soooo tempted to order one to try as I saw the oozing york as the guy cut open the poached egg. *wipes saliva*

Didn't get to try the cakes as we were full from dinner. And the coffees came in a bigger size than usual. But I've heard that the cakes were really good so I'll definitely be back again!

There were so many dishes we wanted to try, but we settled on the French Toast with Banana. And for that additional order, BACON!!! not the turkey bacon but fatty and oh-so-delicious pork bacon. When it come, both of us just had one word in our minds: WOW! There were two big and thick slices of french toast. On top of these were generous slices of bananas and walnuts. Then it was drizzled in caramel sauce. To balance the sweetness, there was a scoop of yogurt plus 6 pieces of bacon. It was sinfully good, the bread was soaked just right with milk and the caramel complemented it really well. The bacon was crispy, but not to the point where it's hard to chew/bite.

I heard that coffee here is the best. My friend ordered it and he said that it's better than most coffee chains in SG. Maybe next time, I'll try it as well.

Maison Ikkoku is not just an ordinary cafe, there are three concepts to it. Level 1 is the coffee place, level 2 is a lifestyle boutique combining mid-high end international menswear retail and on level 3, it is a semi-alfresco cocktail bar. The cafe is located 2-3 streets away from Haji Lane & Arab Street, about 10 minutes walk from Bugis MRT station. You have to look out for a white shophouse, as I almost missed it if not for my friend who spotted it.

I ordered the Eggs Benedict and Caramel Latte while my friend ordered the Twisted French Omelette. I'm always a fan of eggs benedict largely because I love hollandaise sauce. It came together with sautéed asparagus which was so full of flavour. The art on my Caramel Latte is so pretty! The twisted french omelette consist of cheddar, spinach, chives, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and potatoes. Price wise, I felt that the eggs benedict and omelette was over-priced. Still, I'll head back to this cafe to try out their cakes, iced coffee & their famous MI pork bun!
