Aside to that, the pandan chicken also makes it to the top 5. Juicy meat wrapped in pandan flavor. The meat seems to have been seasoned as it is very smooth to the mouth.

Honey chicken is a must have for my son too! Sweet, crispy and juicy chicken is always a crowd fav!

I have no space to put the fried tang hoon but it is also worth mentioning as it has the wok hei!

If you are here, leave some spaces for desserts too. We sampled all 3 and they were all great! I esp like the mango with sticky rice as the mango is very fragrant and smooth.

Located within walkable distance from Hougang Bus Interchange or Kovan MRT, Nakhon is one of the top Thai Cuisine recommended. Known for its popularity, we were prepared to wait in the queue for dinner but we were lucky to grab hold of the last table before the crowd moved in. For those who are thinking of reserving, I'm afraid that there are no such privileges.

Indoors and outdoors seatings are all available. Help yourself with the condiments and the toilet roll given on the table. Cheers to their efficiency, although we had order quite a number of dishes, they all did come within 10 minutes to ease our appetite.

Dinner started with carb intake from the deletable plate of black olive fried rice with minced chicken. Each grain of rice was consistently coated in the dark sauce and every mouthful gave a good crunch with the onions as well as the cashew nuts. Do remember to squeeze the lime juice over it to enjoy its refreshing taste!

Opted for the clear type of Tom Yam out of 2 others which were its thick and with coconut type. This dish which originally gained us some hype before the meal turned the other way round. Though it was clear, the spice had fully shot up to my threshold for spiciness as i had my first mouthful, with tears welling up. Nonetheless, the seafood ingredients were not any lesser and truly Thai!

A consecutive hit of surprises after the incredibly spicy dish, the green curry color was another out of expectation. It's green was way off artificial in its lime color with aplenty of essential ingredients like brinja and peppers adequately added to its flavour. Beef slices were tender but for not-so coconut milk lover like me, I find that the dish was kind of overdose with coconut milk.

How can one leave the stomach empty without such staples drink like Thai Iced Tea as well as the Iced Fragrant Lemon Grass Drink? A few sips or two of these cooling beverages in between the meal were simply amazing as it aids in reducing the spice from the food ordered.

This fiery dish had its spice comparable to Tom Yum Clear Soup. Avoid the chilli padi to skip your tongue from getting numb. A typical Thai appetizer with grated green mango, fish sauce added to its taste topped with a handful of cashew nuts.

Searching for "Wok Hei" in Thai's Way of Hor Fun? Sorry! There's none here. The starchy gravy and sticky hor fun that lump altogether with its typical ingredients like prawns and vegetables were more of less the same to a typical plate of Hor Fun from a Zi Char Stall, less the Wok Hei smell.

Fancy tearing off the dried pandan leaves that wrapped those yummy chicken up? Well, one simply cant wait any longer to check them out. These tender meats were processed in turmeric powder and have a good infused aroma in it. For me I would like to taste the original instead of dipping them into the sweet & sour chilli sauce which would eventually covered up its flavour.

We will never let go of the vegetables, thats my kakis style of dining! We had the sitr-fried asparagus with mushrooms. This was one of the few dishes with no spice included and suitable for children. Simply love the sweet tasting gravy over the crunchy asparagus and carrots.

Dinner ended well with Red Ruby as the last dish shared among 4 of us when it was supposed to be Mr Chua's dessert. Everyone had enjoyed his/her lion share and of course the thinly sliced fragrant chempedak on the heap of snow mountain with the starring red rubies burried underneath.

In summary, I would say that the level of spiciness is not of the average and definitely not for the faint hearted. For those who have taken a closer look at their menu, the dishes cost an average amount of $6 which is pocket friendly as compared to those overly expensive ones in the malls. There are only 1 kind of serving throughout without complicating matters. For those who want to enjoy this cost saving Thai Cuisine, be early to avoid the queue!

Was there to try out its food after hearing many many good comments about this restaurant.

The restaurant is in the HDB Area, but it will attract queue almost every night. The ambience is great as well.

Tried its Clear Soup ($6), also its Tom Yam Soup ($6) and also its Phad Thai ($5).

The clear soup is suitable for those who cannot take spicy food. The ingredients inside are also very fresh, and they are also very generous on the ingredients.

As for the Tom Yam Soup, its suitable for those who can take spicy food. I meant real spicy food. The soup broth itself is already very spicy, the tom yam smell is very fragrant.

Phad Thai is my favourite amongst all. There are many ingredients including prawns, tang hoon and peanut. The Phad Thai is nicely made, also very generous on the amount of ingredients.

Condiments such as chilli flakes, peanuts and lime were readily put aside on the plate. The noodles texture really remarkable, heavy flavours of sweet, sour and spicy was in a harmonious balance. Fried rice on the other hand was fancifully sweet-tasting and well-done with generous dollop of pork floss. Both were $6.00 per plate. In summary, I quite satisfied the prompt service, delicious food and most importantly decent price. I would definitely recommend to my friends.

I stumbled upon this dish when I was looking for something new to try and I never regretted it. Moist, fragrant and sprinkled with ingredients, I will unknowingly finish the entire plate in a blink of an eye!

***

This location is a little hard to find as it is tucked away from the busy crowded portion of Kovan Central. But the long snaking queues daily will definitely catch your eye if you drive past the area.

This entire meal came up to $24 for 3 pax and we thought that this is way more worth it than to go to an overprice cafe to pay for atmosphere and lousy food.

This trusty gem of a neighborhood eatery is what most of us Hougang peeps turn to when we're looking for a quick Thai fix. That the restaurant is staffed entirely by Thais should be an obvious sign of authenticity.

At dinnertime, there's almost always a 30 minute wait to be seated at Nakhon Kitchen, even on weekday evenings. I wouldn't dream of coming here for dinner on weekends, so I don't know how crazy a Saturday or Sunday queue can get. Once you're seated, however, service is prompt and your dishes are served in no time.

Pineapple Fried Rice, $6.00 - One of the few non-spicy dishes on the menu, the pineapple fried rice here at Nakhon Kitchen is lightly curried, sweet, and nicely complemented by raisins and a light sprinkle of pork floss. Pretty average, but nevertheless useful to have this on hand if you're ordering the tom yam soup.

Black olive fried rice with minced chicken, $6.00 - If you're not a believer of fruits in your rice, you've got another carb option in the form of olive fried rice. I actually prefer it to the pineapple rice, as the salty fragrance of olives and siew dam (a dark, syrupy Thai soy sauce) pervades every grain of rice in on that plate. The accompanying chopped raw onions and cashew nuts add a welcome crunch to each spoonful of rice as well.

Tom Yam Soup, $6.00 - Ah, the tom yam soup. Where do I even begin? If you're one of those people who have no problem at all with spice, by which I mean you're capable of eating baby red chillies without breaking into a sweat, then you'll enjoy this. Objectively speaking, this is very good soup - it's filled with the distinctive aroma of lemongrass and has a satisfyingly tangy taste due to the addition of tomatoes. Generous serving of fresh seafood within as well.

Thai vermicelli salad with seafood, $6.00 - Don't be fooled by the deceptively mild appearance of the yam talay here. I used to find this salad incredibly spicy, but after drinking the tom yam soup this yam talay seems to possess the spice level of a Happy Meal. That metaphor doesn't even make sense, but I trust you understand what I mean. Sour, fiery and refreshing, this vermicelli salad functions as an excellent palate cleanser and whets your appetite for the dishes to follow.

Kang Kong Belachan, $6.00 - When my conscience is niggling from all that pigging (wa I'm a poet), this stir-fried veggie dish is something I always order to try and make myself feel better. Like oily vegetables will negate the effects of the other dishes from hell that I'm eating. The kangkong served at Nakhon Kitchen is crunchy and nicely infused with the fragrance of fried garlic as well as the shrimpy flavour of belachan. Only gripe is that it could be a little less oily.

Stir-fried minced pork with basil leaves, $6.00 - This dish is a must-order for me every time I visit. Basil leaves are an acquired taste for most, and to me they taste wretched when consumed in isolation. They remind me of liquorice, which I happen to be terrified of. I do, however, think they're excellent when they lend their flavour to stir-fried meats. Nakhon Kitchen's rendition of pork and basil is one of the best there is.

The more observant among you would probably have noticed that the dishes reviewed in this article all cost $6.00. Split between three, it works out to a reasonably priced dinner. Plus the food's great, which makes this place is one of my favourite Thai eateries in Singapore. Just a gentle heads up, in case you haven't realised what I've been repeatedly driving across - the spice level here isn't for the faint-hearted. This is value-for-money Thai food that packs a lethal punch, and I'd advise you to come prepared for your stomach lining to bear the consequences of your meal.

There are two branches of Nakhon currently- one in Kovan (the first branch) and one in Bedok North. We have been visiting Nakhon at its Kovan branch since it first opened. Since we have not tried all the Thai food in Singapore, it is difficult to conclude that it’s the best. But, it is definitely our top favorite from what we’ve tasted.

I've seen a few negative reviews on Nakhon and I think you really have to choose the right dishes!

So here's the ones we love...

A must-order is the Thai Iced Milk Tea ($3). Thai Black tea infused with condensed milk makes the drink really good. It’s different from the Milk Tea you get from bubble tea shops. Do try it if you have never had a cup of Thai Iced Milk Tea; take caution in craving for more!

Tom Yum Soup ($6) comes in either clear or thick base (with coconut milk). We have tried both. I guess for those who prefer the pure tom yum flavor with a spicier kick, pick clear base! The coconut milk sort of neutralizes the spiciness of the tom yum soup. Personally, I prefer thick base.

Stir-fried Mince Pork with hot basil leaves ($6) is a simple dish that appeals to us because of his tasty flavor. Besides its spiciness, it gives off a nice basil fragrance that’s not too overpowering. So for those who don’t really like basil, no harm trying!

Homemade Thai Fish Cake (4 pieces for $6) is my personal favorite! It is especially so when it is served hot and fresh. It is less spicy than Otah and the spices that they add into it makes it really good!

The Stir Fried Kang Kong Belachan ($6) is another dish we would always order. We can’t do without vegetables in a meal and what better choice than to order something spicy and tasty? What we love about their Kang Kong is that it is well-cooked and the belachan flavor is consistent throughout the dish.

However, my family has the kind of love hate relationship with Nakhon Kitchen, every visit to the restaurant was luck of the draw, a dish could taste real good in one visit but a total disappointment in the next, the inconsistency in the food quality was validated in the few visits to the restaurant. An area the restaurant may need to do some reflections and find way to improve.

Apparently the best seller at Nakhon Kitchen is the Pandan Chicken, with every table ordering at least one portion. It was sold out during lunch! We only manage to have a taste of this dish on the next day when we came back during the evening. I can already smell the fragrance of spices-infused chicken while unwrapping the pandan leave. Although it’s deep fried, but it’s not dry at all, and in fact it’s really tender. I can see why some customers ordered a second or even a third portion and why it’s sold out.

Always see a queue whenever we pass by as we stay in Hougang and this is a Authentic Thai Food place in a heartland area. The place is abit cramped and crowded but very nice Thai food. worth the queue and must try if you love Thai food. Always see a queue whenever we pass by as we stay in Hougang and this is a Authentic Thai Food place in a heartland area. The place is abit cramped and crowded but very nice Thai food. worth the queue and must try if you love Thai food. The thai food is really good better comparable to the ones in golden mile. and importantly its authentic thai.

On the weekends, expect a long queue of customers waiting for their turns to have a fix of traditional Thai food. For Little Devil ('LD') and I, it is more like a game of cat and mouse game. If we passed by Nakhon and don't see any people queuing, we will quickly turn to the car park and grab a quick bite there. However if we see a long queue, then we just keep going.

All along, we find all the food here is delicious and authentic. The reason is simple, they bring the same basic ingredients, sauces and condiments direct from Thailand. Majority of their cooks and service staff are also Thai, therefore you can not only taste but also feel their authenticity.

Our favourite dishes here are: Pad Thai ($5), Green Curry Chicken ($8), Stir-fried mince pork w/hot basil leaves ($6) and Pandan Leaves Chicken ($6).

Nakhon Kitchen Pad Thai has a nice balance of sweet and sour. The rice noodle has a springy texture and combine all the ingredients and texture such as bean spout, chives, eggs and crushed peanuts beautifully.

Every time I have green curry chicken here, I will more likely end up with extra serving of rice. It has subtle spiciness, fragrant green curry, and richness of the coconut milk are just too inviting. Although the carnivores will feel that the meat in the curry is lacking, I will add the meat from Pandan Leaves Chicken to satisfy my cravings as a carnivore. The Pandan Leaves Chicken is well marinated and fried to perfection with the wrapped pandan leaves. The chicken remain juicy and succulent, with a lovely pandan flavour.

The Stir-fried mince pork is very spicy combined with fragrant basil leaves, this dish really open up your appetite. The saltiness of the dish is just right with a little tingling of sweetness, entice you to keep scooping for more even though the chilli is numbing your tongue.

The Thai Ice Milk Tea here is the same as the one you get in Thailand. The upside of it, it has less ice than what you normally get in Thailand. The downside, it is almost triple the price you pay in Thailand.

The service here is friendly, efficient and fuss-free. Your first dish will normally be served within 10 minutes after they take your order. If you just want to order take away, you just need to approach the service staff. Decoration is minimum and please be considerate of the other people waiting for your seat

Overall, for those who never been to Nakhon Kitchen, consider this as a hidden find. One of the cheapest and most authentic Thai food you can find in Singapore. Cheers!!!

As for the Tom Yam Seafood Soup, it was a bit too spicy which overpowers the sourness and there were a lot of ingredients like seafood, mushrooms and vermicelli. Next, the pineapple rice which looks appetizing with the soft pork floss floating on top. The rice texture is just nice with strong and fresh pineapple aroma. As for the deep fried garlic chicken, i find that is a bit too hard but still very crispy with nice garlic flavour and tender chicken. Lastly, what I love most is the Mango glutinous rice dessert which was awesome, very authentic and sweet!

The Price
Reasonably priced at around $30 for the final bill.

Overall
I will definitely come back again and highly recommended to try this!

In any discussion about where to find the best Thai food in Singapore, Nakhon Kitchen always comes up. Having built their reputation for serving tasty, authentic Thai dishes with fresh ingredients at reasonably low prices, Nakhon Kitchen commands a constant queue of diners waiting to get in on a daily basis.

Ambience at Nakhon Kitchen is simple, rustic, and functional. People don't come here for ambience after all... They come for the food. However, I do like that they provide complimentary tissue paper (toilet rolls actually) on every table. Decor is minimal, though suitably Thai inspired. Prepare for a slightly warm, noisy dining environment.

Service at Nakhon Kitchen is brusque but efficient. Don't expect to get much conversation out of the staff. As most of the staff are Thai, expect to converse in either English or Thai with them. Because this place is constantly packed, expect to wait about 10 - 15 minutes for your food, even after being seated. And to be seated, you'll first have to queue for about 20 - 30 minutes. This 'queue to get in' is actually part of Nakhon Kitchen marketing strategy, purposefully implemented by the owners.

The fiery, spicy Tom Yum Seafood Soup has a nice kick, and the ingredients are fresh, though the plain and unassuming presentation lets it down slightly. Beware, looks are deceiving!

Overall, Nakhon Kitchen is an excellent place for Thai food. But I personally feel that sometimes, it is over hyped. While I don't mind waiting up to 30 minutes for the food, anything longer isn't worth the time and effort.
