Havent been to Telok Ayer Street for dinner for a while and little i know that i have been missing alot of good stuff there. Especially this one! Located at one of the shop houses along Telok Ayer Street, this restaurant is opened by a Korean boss Will Jeong, a super friendly boss that served authentic and healthy korean food. So do i know that the food is authentic? Well, the chef is also a korean too! dining experience there really brings me back to my memories of my Korean trip!

Oh Neul Han Jeom is very well known for their Korean BBQ. But, i am sharing with you another dish that is not BBQ this time!

Budae Jjigae @ $35. It is actually stew with ham (luncheon meat), sausage, kimchi and toufu! it comes with Ramen but u need to top up additional $5 for it. but trust me, the ramen is really worth it! it is so yummy that you will ask for more! the stew is served in steamboat style ( with korean pot) and i can tell you, it is flooded with alot of ingredients so it is totally worth every single cent! The soup is super good and i super love it! it is not too salty nor it is too sweet. I think the chef must know that we are super hungry so the noodles is already more or less cooked so it just need to get heated in the steamboat and we can just dug into it! did i also mention that i love their fish cake? lolx

Haemul Pajeon @$20 bucks. this is highly recommended by the waiter and i tell you. you will never regret ordering this cos this is the best korean pancake that i ever had so far! the pancake is cripsy on the outside but soft on the inside. Filled with alot of ingredients ( not like others that you find nothing inside but starch and miserable veges).

and never to be missed is the refillable side dishes..i love the side dishes! especially their kimchi and also the salad! is soo good...that i ask for second serving but i stop after the second one cos the food we ordered is too big servings and we need to ask for takeaway (for the pancake).

Kimchi Jjigae, Hot and bubbling red colored kimchi soup packed with the goodness and flavor of the crunchy fermented cabbage (kimchi) and thinly sliced succulent pork belly.
Jeyuk, Mouthwatering stir fried pork in chili sauces tantalized my taste buds even before it was place on the table as I can smell the aromatic sizzling chili cooking on the hotplate used to dish the food. Spicy pork was tender and appetizing. Would recommend to order their set meals if you have a budget and wanted to have True authentic Korean food.

Oh Neul Han Jeom uses the infra red technology of BBQ stove which reduces the smoke and smell from the BBQ session. The BBQ stove is in build on a table of 4. After making our orders, the lady switched it on to let it warm up.

Eggs are cooked and served in the mini claypot with bright color of greens (spring onions) on top - a special method of serving eggs. Soft and spongy egg with burnt smell within the eggs. Eggs /food sticking on the walls of the claypot are burnt ("Chao Ta").

Woosamgyeop (Beef Brisket). Yammy!
Skillfully sliced and placed onto the plate in circular manner with some ganishings over it.
Presentable looking and most importantly service is a must especially when having Korean BBQ.
Costs: $25

Ginseng Soup (Bangyetang) is quite peppery at first but after added the given salt, there are more taste. Soup is not as cloudy as expected, few balls of glutinous rice can be found when I stirred till the bottom. As the essence has gone all to the soup, the chicken meat are tasteless, not very sweet and the strong frozen taste tells you straight away that it was once frozen. I would prefer something stronger in ginseng taste.

Costs: $15

Yangnyeom moksal (Marinated grilled pork) that comes with mushrooms are great too!
Meat are carefully cut with a pair of scissors by the lady before placing into the BBQ pit. Cubes of tasty grilled meat are well marinated by the Korean lady who served us. Juicy and goes very well with the sweet korean chilli sauce.

The overall spending for our dinner for 2. Decent pricing for a nice Korean dinner.

Recommendations and Tips
Closer to the kitchen, there are a stretch of seating which are more enclosed, it is suitable for group gatherings especially. Another place added to my list of gathering places!

I know of many who dont really enjoy korean BBQ due to the stinky smell all over the body and bags after the meal. However Oh Neul Han Jeom had took the effort to reduce the smoke and smell, it is a definitely another korean place not to be missed.

Quality of the food is good too, and fresh. You will not missed the freshness and well marination of the meat. Though a bit pricey and they doesn't have the buffet menu (ala carte only!), I think it is worth it for the fact u are getting back the quality of the food not quantity.

Try their magic cup filled with Korean beer! Definitely will blast you off on how refreshing and light it taste.

We ordered loads to share. Unfortunately I cannot remember any of the names of the dishes so I hope pictures will do for now (one of the things I struggle with for Korean cuisine). The pork belly (first image) was very good and they were generous with the slices. The pancake (second picture) was actually so-so, but it was quite forgettable. Not to say it was bad or anything though. We also ordered some beef thingy which tasted superb (third picture). Some other items that were not captured include Budae Jjigae soup (stew with ham, sausage, kimchi and tofu) and more beef stuff.

The portions here are actually quite small, so much so that we had to order a second round of meat. I was still hungry after, but then again I have a huge appetite! ONHJ's also on the pricey side but the food's definitely worth the price. I want to come back!

Upon entering the restaurant, one can see that the restaurant is divided into half - a modern and a traditional corner - rather interesting concept in a Korean restaurant. The owner also imported a famous 4m x 3m painting by Shin Yoon Bok which is about the 'Duan wu feng qing' where the folks will bathe in the river to get rid of bad luck. And the owner explained that the big wigs are women who work in the ktv.

The owner recommended jokbal which is pork feet as it is good for the ladies and there is alot of collagen in it.

One of my fav side dishes other than the marinated onion chunks. This restaurant goes the unconventional way and serve interesting side dishes which i've never seen it before in any other places.

This is the magic cup which the owner specially imported from Korea. I am not a fan of tiger beer but because of the magic cup which keeps the beer temperature cold, i had a few cups. Even the rice wine taste better!

Went to a few more other Korean restaurants after this visit and i find that Oh Neul Han Jeom serves much better food as their soup is made from scratch and their sauces are of quality. Oh lastly, the service is the best as the owners will talk to the customers from time to time, checking if the customers like the food.

We also had some Korean Rice Beer that was served in unique tin cups that kept the drink chilled even after leaving it on the table for 30 - 40 minutes. The boss explained that he had these "magic cups" specially flown in from Korea and that you wouldn't be able to find a similar cup anywhere in Singapore! It was a great evening spent with good company, over GREAT FOOD and the drinks were awesome too!

Most important after the meal we all dun smell bad at all. The price is reasonable and affordable. The place is really nice and comfortable. The toilet is really clean unlike most BBQ places i went to. The waitress and waiter there are really friendly and are all willingly to serve you to make your experience a good one.

The sight that immediately greeted us was a decor unlike most other Korean BBQ restaurants we've been to such as Sampo (see our Sampo review, lah), which tended to border more on the traditional. The first "Oh My Goodness!" of Oh Neul Han Jeon (ONHJ). Here's what you can expect:

As you can see, ONHJ smacks of a blend of the old and new, but the boss, Will, assured us that the food was authentic - which we would stamp a "double confirm" to. This brings us to the second "Oh My Goodness!".

Korean foodies will know the near-unlimited heaps of side dishes that come with each order, as well as the variety. At ONHJ, we must say that they don't disappoint in quality and uniqueness (not your usual fare of kelp, ikan billis, etc.) although the variety was a little toned down. The sides that found our way into our bellies included steam egg, two versions of kimchi(yes kimchi lovers, we're not talking about different vegetables like cucumber and cabbage, but two different kimchi styles), and tofu (there were also marinated onion chunks, but we didn't really fancy these). Mind you, when we say that these weren't the usual side dish fare, we don't mean the base ingredients per se, but are talking about the preparation and style. The bottomline was that the quality and uniqueness of the side dishes more than made up for the lack of variety. But the side dishes, as they were meant to be, were to be mere supporting casts to the main highlights: BBQ meat and other delectable mains.

We were treated to hearty potions of Galbisal (Premium Beef Short Ribs), Woosamgyeop (Thin Sliced Beef Brisket Marinated in "Secret Sauce" -> we tried digging this out of Will like the interoggators we were but failed miserably), Yangnyeom Moksal (Marinated Pork Collar Neck with Soy Sauce), Haemul Pajeon (Korean Seafood Pancake), Jokbal (Pork Knuckle Braised in Soy Sauce), and Kimchi Jjigae (Kimchi Soup with Pork and Ramen).

What made the meat grilling experience so different was that the grills ran on infra-red heating units instead of your conventional stoves (or charcoal stoves at some places we've been to). Will explained that this helps the meat cook more evenly and also at the right temperature since the unit automatically switches off upon reaching a certain temperature after a duration of time. Although he added that this helps removes smoke (and therefore fulfilling the important task of not making you smell like a piece of grilled meat), we still ended up smelling like Galbisal, allowing us to recapture the scents of an otherwise fantastic meal as late as 11pm after reaching home. Regardless, the food and side dishes deserved the third "Oh My Goodness!" of ONHJ (when your none-pork knuckle eating other half wolves down fat, skin, and everything else save bones of said knuckle, you know it's that good).

As usual, the proof is in the pudding and the sizzle is in the meat:

Will, deserved the fourth "Oh My Goodness!" not only for his hospitality, but generosity as well - having personally saw to the grilling, demonstrating the craft of savouring the Yangnyeom Moksal with wrappings of lettuce and bean paste sauce, and also offering us cups of Soju which he professed "complements excellently with the meat" akin to a perfect mariage of Pinot Noir and sweet meats. "Yah what, it's a food tasting session mah", is what everyone might say, but it's actually pretty easy to differentiate service from the heart from paid obsequious service solely meant to cast the restaurant in a good light. Will's service was consistently good, probably stemming from a well-placed pride in his establishment. We actually tested him out by shamelessly asking for more helpings of side dishes and soju pourings, but he aced them all. Lastly, we observed how he treated other customers that were not part of the food tasting and saw that the same service levels extended to them. Even if he really did "dress to impress" (which we didn't think so, of course), he would have deserved full marks for such meticulosity.

The fifth and final "Oh My Goodness!" went to Estelle, our host, and the great company we had at our table. As the saying goes, "Money can't buy you everything". Truth be told, we've dined in some of the fanciest outfits in Singapore (Au Jardin, Lawry's, Salt Grill and Sky Bar, among others), but the whole social atmosphere we experienced at ONHJ was priceless literally. It felt like a home thanksgiving meal that warmed the heart as much as the grill did.

We ended the session on as high a note as we had when we first started, maybe even more. Although we had an additional "Oh My Goodness!" in the form of a $50 parking ticket (yah, parking at Telok Ayer is crazy), the five pleasant "Oh My Goodness!" experiences truly made this one of the finest pancies in our repetoire of foodie fancies.

Five thumbs up!!

Saeng Moksal, or pig's collar bone, is best consumed the traditional way. With lettuce, kimchi, sauce, onions and 2 clove sliced garlic. Oh, make sure you gobble up the whole wrap if you have a mouth as big as mine!

What's korean food without KIMCHI RAMEN! Well, the actual name is Budae Jjigae, stew with kimchi, tofu and sausages.
The dish is not as spicy as it looks, just right for my liking
. If you prefer a stronger flavour, do request for extra spicy soup base. But please, for my sake, try it first with the original base. What more can i say? Its my favourite dish from Oh Neul Han Jeom.

Ambience wise, the restaurant is filled with warm and soft yellow lighting. Its like the owner has chosen it on purpose. It makes every dish served looks appetising! Not to forget it's kind of romantic, every lady looks gorgeous with candle light (or yellow light LOL). Great for couples! -star star-

Did i mentioned the name of this restaurant is actually One Piece of Meat in english? Goofy, huh? I definitely had more than one piece! I'm sure you all will love it as well!

Much thanks to host Estelle Lee, and the friendly korean family, for such good chow.

Ps- For those travelling by train, exit G at Tanjong Pagar station and walk along Telok Ayer road. Just a 5 minutes walk.
