Full Paul Boulangerie Patisserie review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2014/12/paul-boulangerie-patisserie.html

Paul Boulangerie Patisserie, more commonly known as PAUL, is a French franchise bakery cafe. Established in 1889 in Croix, within the Nord-Pas-De-Calais region, France, Paul Boulangerie Patisserie specialises in homemade baked goods and confectioneries. Paul Boulangerie Patisserie opened its doors in Singapore in March 2012, staying close to the original French / France recipes for their menu.

Ambience at Paul Boulangerie Patisserie is consistent worldwide, a simple, non-descript, black against white visual aesthetic. Furniture resembles those found in typical Paris / Parisian street cafes, featuring small round wooden tables, and either hard wooden chairs or soft comfy sofas. Lighting is typically dim, although Paul Boulangerie Patisserie does get quite a bit of natural light. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating.

Service at Paul Boulangerie Patisserie is efficient and proactive. Staff take notice of diners, checking if you're ready to order, and are able to carry a conversation. Most are also knowledgable on the various items in their extensive menu, able to advise accordingly if questioned. Very good service, but not truly outstanding yet.

Food at Paul Boulangerie Patisserie revolves around traditional French favourites. They have an extensive list of baked goods, breads, pastries, and dessert confectioneries, most of which I find to be very good! They've also got a small selection of main courses, salads, and sandwiches. Portion sizes are decent for one, although prices are slightly high as befits their premium status. Budget about SGD $50 per person for a full meal, or about SGD $15 per person for pastries and desserts.

The Grand Café Crème (SGD $5.40) is a classic French coffee, sold in nearly all Paris / Parisian cafes. It consists of regular coffee that is typically pulled longer than an espresso, made from coarse ground coffee beans. Despite its name, it actually doesn't contain cream, rather, a small amount of milk and foam are added.

The Hot Chocolate (SGD $6.90) here is among the best I've tasted, rich, thick, and deep with chocolate flavour, but not overly sweet. Hot and satisfiying!

The Éclair Paris Brest (SGD $7.50) marries 2 classic French pastries, the Éclair, and the Paris-Brest. A soft, oblong choux pastry, filled with smooth, sweet hazelnut cream and candied hazelnuts, this excellent albeit decadent dessert isn't too sweet or heavy. Highly recommended!

The Longe De Thon (SGD $29.90), or Seasoned Tuna Loin, features a thick, fresh, fillet of tuna fish loin, quickly seared under high heat such that the outside is cooked, but the inside remains pink. An acquired taste, I loved the crunch of the sesame seeds and the flavour of the cooked meat, but the thick cut meant that the raw tuna was chunky, which I didn't quite like. Served with a delightful medley of roasted vegetables / ratatouille including carrots, zucchini, and summer squash, with grilled asparagus, and a seasonal sweet cranberry sauce on the side.

3) Crepe with chocolate sauce and whipped cream $8.50. The taste of the crepe was quite strong as compared to other places but doesn't really seem to be worth the price.

4) Cafe au lait $5.60++
Coffee taste was quite strong and fragrant but it doesn't look attractive as there's no coffee art. It's good though!

The ambience is lovely and i love the furniture and decorations. we actually chose other desserts but almost everything was out of stock already when we were there at late 8+ so we had to settle for these 3 desserts.

Mini assorted macarons $19 - The flavours are not stated at the counter. I've tried all flavours and I think their flavours are pistachio, caramel, chocolate, coconut, raspberry and chocolate. My favourite has got to be the chcoolate flavour. In all, their macarons taste average only and I had to arrange the macarons nicely for a photo as some of them had really little fillings in them (barely filled half). They should make the effort to be more consistent with their standard.

I was really excited that the west side of Singapore has become a food heaven especially when one of my fav dessert cafes has opened at Westgate. To be honest, the lemon meringue tart doesn't taste as good as the one at ngee ann city (flagship store) but the chocolate tart and strawberry mille-feuille definitely had satisfied my cravings.Do remember to order a pot of tea to go along with your desserts because it will be really refreshing! The ambience of the restaurant is quite high class with chandeliers.

While walking back from a shopping/eating trip at IMM, I decided to pop by Paul Bakery. This time I got the Tartelette Citron ($7.30) which is essentially a lemon cream tartlet. The cream on top seems to be made of meringue since it is quite light tasting. Meanwhile the lemon curd that fills the tart inside is super sour. I like the crumbly base as it adds some texture to the whole tart. Overall it is a sweet and sour tart, with the sweet cream and sour lemon curd. The bakery has a small alfresco

The bakery has a small alfresco dining area for patrons, while there is also a restaurant next to it for customers who are dining in. I think it is a bit different from the Ngee Ann City outlet where dining area for both the patisserie and the restaurant is combined together. However the staffs here were quite friendly and helpful.

The pie costs $5.50 and has a crumbly texture. The inside is also has this filling but I was unable to discern what it is made of. The tart is not too sweet and is a nice treat for those who dislike sweet stuffs. The serving is also quite big in which the tart almost filled the entire box.

I had be back to try more of their desserts and also their main course dishes!

I bought the Benoîton Canberry at $2.30. Benoîton Canberry was a breadstick with cranberry.

The Benoîton Canberry was really hard to chew, I was not sure how the French ate this bread. The Benoîton dough was very stiff and almost airless. However from the hard dough, I could taste the sweetness of the dry cranberry fruits.

Overall, I still prefer to eat fluffy bread from local bakery.

Now that there is a branch closer to home, it made the trip to Paul all the more inevitable! Unfortunately, the first time I went with a friend, the restaurant was not opened for business. I only managed to get to try the food on my second trip to Westgate a week later with my mum.

The bakery is separated from the dine-in restaurant and is located just next to the restaurant. The bakery is for takeaway although there are also a few seats in this area if you want to sit and eat. This was where my mum and I had our afternoon tea at. According to the staff, there is no service charge to eat in this area since it's basically takeaway (they give you the food in takeaway carriers instead of serving them on a plate unless you're dining in the restaurant). Even so, we decided to stick to our decision of eating outside at the bakery instead.

This is because here, you can find the display of their bread, viennoiserie and pâtisserie range across a spectrum of prices such as the Croissant ($2.70), Palmier ($3.60), Pain Chocolat Amandes ($4.20), Chouquettes Fromage ($5.80), Éclairs like the Éclair Vanille ($6.60), as well as Tartelettes like the Tartelette Citron Meringuée ($7.30). I nearly died at the sight of their display counter with all those big eclairs, large tarts, huge macarons.... If it weren't for the staff eyeing us and waiting for our order, I've have been contented just to stand there and take my own sweet time soaking in the lovely sight of all the freshly baked breads, pastries and confection!

Espresso ($3.50)
This espresso had a a thin layer of crema on top and was quite bitter to taste. I wasn't too particularly keen on this although it got the thumb up from my mum who liked the bitter taste. She didn't even add any sugar to it!

Croissant ($2.70)
This pure butter croissant was quite buttery! It was also very crispy on the outside and was quite flaky with bits falling off as we bit into it! My mum liked the crispy and buttery taste which was just right for her, although I prefer my croissants to be slightly more softer.

Pain au Chocolat ($3.00)
The addition of two chocolate bars to the croissant was a nice treat for people like me who want to have their pastry with something sweeter. Like the standard croissant, this was also quite crispy and flaky. The melted chocolate was not very sweet but it was chocolate-y enough for me!

Tartelette Chocolat ($6.90)
This tartelette was my favourite among all the items we ordered. The tart base was buttery, slightly moist, and crumbly but yet strong enough to hold together without falling apart upon picking up. Velvety smooth and wickedly rich, the dense but not overly sweet chocolate filling worked well the buttery, crumbly tart to deliver a luscious, melt-in-the-mouth chocolate treat that simply hit the spot on every bite! Oh my Paul, this was simply divine! I'll admit to shamelessly hoarding this for myself!

Pure Jee ($8.88)
We were a tad full after the food, so we took this pretty little dessert home instead. I must admit that I did have rather high expectations for this after the Tartelette Chocolat. After all, the shiny and silky smooth Pure Jee is the darkest chocolate dessert in their range and is made of bitter chocolate (70% cocoa) with a crunchy hazelnut base and rich chocolate mousse with a sprinkling of chopped nuts around the sides. I didn't find this to be very bitter nor was it overly sweet. What I did love, however, was the heavenly combination of smooth chocolate mousse with crunchy hazelnut base and bits! Chocolate and hazelnut is a combination that simply can't go wrong! But while this was also a delightful treat, I still found myself preferring the Tartelette Chocolat more for its thicker chocolate taste.

Overall, our bill came up to $24.98 for 5 items. Admittedly, the price can get a tad steep especially for their pâtisserie range, although I think it is more or less in line with the prices from other specialty desserts cafe or restaurants. My mum though, wasn't sold on the price. Service was also a tad lacklustre, at least from the bakery side. There were no warmth nor were there friendly smiles, just somewhat stoic staff doing their jobs. Considering the price and reputation of the Paul brand, we had expect something a little better.

We may not have tried most of the items in their range but so far, based on our limited sampling, I found myself leaning towards their pâtisserie items more than the viennoiserie items. I am certainly a converted fan of their pâtisserie range, especially the Tartelette Chocolat, and I highly recommend the tartelettes from Paul Bakery. It is good enough for me to wonder if a return trip for a proper meal at the Paul restaurant may be next in order. One thing for sure, I will definitely come back again for the Tartelette Chocolat as well as to try the other bakery items like the breads and the other desserts in their pâtisserie range like the Millefeuille Chocolat, which also seem like something worth checking out in future!
