Full Penny University review here: http://ivanteh-runningman.blogspot.sg/2015/03/penny-university.htmlSince opening its doors in November 2012, Penny University has established itself as a hip, vibrant coffee joint in East Singapore. Founder Mustafah Kamal styled Penny University after the 18th century English coffeehouses of old, a place where good, affordable coffee was served, along with the latest news and gossip of the town. While other coffee joints have since sprouted in the area, Penny University has held its own all these years, and is still going strong.Ambience at Penny University has a rustic, eclectic charm. Heavy wooden furniture lines the small floor space, while the decor is decidely retro industrial chic. Items from years past stacked upon shelves, dim designer light bulbs cast a warming glow. Seats are sturdy but hard. True to form, the place is vibrant and buzzing. I had the unfortunate experience of sitting at the bar, which is poorly designed, with little leg room, and rather cramped space, blocking the main passageway.Service at Penny University is semi self-service, where ordering and payment is done over the counter. This causes queues to form at the cashier, which also blocks the main passageway in the cramped floor space. Orders are served to your table, but staff don't seem too friendly. They do however, try to accomodate requests, and are able to make recommendations on pastries and desserts.Food at Penny University is a mix of Western and Middle Eastern influence. You're assured of getting pretty good pastries, cakes, desserts, and coffee at Penny University, as these are outsourced items, made by reputable brands. Food in the form of mains are another matter though, decent, not terrible, but not outstanding either, and ultimately, rather forgettable. Portions are nicely sized for 1, and prices are affordable, on the lower range for a cafe, budget about SGD $15 per person for a meal here. Overall, my experience here was semi-decent, but I doubt that I'll return. Loved their Spiked Muddy (SGD $6.50) which features their excellent muddy espresso with cold milk and gula melaka / palm sugar, served in a jar. You'll need to spin it around to mix it before drinking. The coffee is suitably strong and smooth, with a slight sweetness that isn't overpowering. The Turkish Eggs (SGD $8.60) are 2 poached eggs served in a bowl, topped with lightly whipped greek yoghurt, home made spicy Moroccan harissa sauce, and oregano leaves. It's served alongside several pieces of toasted sourdough bread. I find this poor value for money, as the bread portion is too little, and of the 2 poached eggs, I got one that was perfect, while the other was semi-solid. Overall, a very light dish, decent enough, but I wish there was more bread to go with this.

Having visited Penny University for brunch, I decided to head back there to try their offerings for dinner! As crowded as this looks, it's actually alot more empty compared to brunch! Alot of customers were getting cakes to go.And this was the end results, hardly any cakes left, compared to what I saw earlier in the day.Pretty much 50% of their menu were also sold out!1. Earl Grey Tea Cake $5I decided to quickly grab the last two slices of cake in the display and it was definitely worth my while. This was more like a pound cake that tasted like tea, with a hard sugary top coating. It was quite dense and great to share amongst two people.2. Tropical Earl Grey $6This is by far, my favourite cake. Do not like the layers of cream intimidate you, the cream isn't sweet, the cake is super moist and I even got two more slices to take home with me. Even with the cakes sitting in the fridge for 1-2 days, the cake remained moist! The tea flavour was present in every bite, and you can even smell it!3. Peppermint Iced Chocolate $5.50This literally tasted like an "After-Eight" chocolate in a liquid form, the peppermint flavour wasn't too overpowering and the chocolate was very real and not too heaty. My friend and I enjoyed this so much!4. Salmon Guacamole $9.50I feel that for $9.50, this was worth every penny! There was so much salmon, I couldn't find enough bread to eat it with the salmon! The salmon tasted great and the bread was very crispy and toasty. It stayed crispy even after 10-15 minutes.5. Affogato $7One dose of Affogato at noon wasn't enough, I needed a second dose! Ice cream, coffee and gula melaka! It's heavenly, I will definitely be ordering this every single time I step into Penny University! The smell of the caffeine, just wakes you up!Cakes and the Salmon Guacamole, a perfect dinner time treat, along with the Affogato, even though almost the entire kitchen was wiped out of food and we couldn't order anything else, I was still a very happy customer. Great Cakes, Great Service and Great Coffee = Happy Customers like Me

2 years odd old Penny University is definitely standing strong along the stretch of East Coast Road. Strong aroma of coffee brew welcomes you once you step into the cafe. A corner of the cafe is decorated with bookshelves making it like a reading chilling corner. & a thing to note is that the wait is crazily long during the weekends! You may wonder why with so many cafes around right now, but it’s just for 2 simple reason, Cheap & Quality food.Since the last time i tried a babycino i begin to fall in love with it, partly due to the mini marshmallow i must say. Babycino ($4) are basically frothed milk without the caffeine. & topped with mini marshmallow for some sweetness when melt in your mouth. As i’m not a milk lover, i find it a little too overwhelming for me, i’ll probably go for the chocolate flavor the next time i drop by there. As you may or may not know by now, Penny university do not really serve the typical all day breakfast where you can get it almost in any cafe. They had something simpler, not too fanciful, and it started all with toasts and croissants with scrambled eggs or something healthy like yoghurt with granola. And this Turkish Eggs ($8) caught my attention almost instantly. 2 poached eggs on lightly whipped yogurt, topped with homemade spicy Moroccan harissa sauce and oregano leaves, served with toasted bread. Very light and refreshing flavor, sourish yoghurt with the savory eggs. A very special and delightful combination i would say. You could add on smoked salmon or ham / turkey at some extra penny. We wanted to try their buttermilk waffle but it was sold out on that day, so we decided to go for their Brownie with ice cream ($5.50). Very chocolatey and nutty. It’s a little dry and crumbly too. Goes well with their generous scoop of vanilla ice cream nonetheless.Overall, a cafe still keeping their prices affordable and not compromising the quality of food all these while. It’s definitely commendable and worth a visit when you’re near the vicinity.http://poohlovesfood.wordpress.com/2015/03/01/penny-university/ for full review with pics

Penny University is a term that originated from 18th century coffeehouses in London, England. Instead of paying for drinks, people were charged a penny to enter a coffeehouse. But here in Katong, you don’t have to pay a penny to enter the cafe lah. There is no cappuccinos or lattes here. You just have to pick from the 3, 5 and 7oz. cup sizes and simply state if you’d like milk in your coffee. The place was bustling with cafe-goers especially on weekends. They source their beans from local roasters, serve specialist cakes and bread freshly baked daily in the area, support and collaborate with local bakers and aim to be a haven for people of the East Coast and beyond. I had a plate of Turkish Eggs ($8.60) for brunch. With lightly whipped yoghurt and topped with homemade spicy moroccan harissa sauce, it gives the eggs a spicy dimension. And there’s sourdough for dipping.Read more:http://www.misstamchiak.com/20-halal-cafes-in-singapore/

I paid my visit to penny university at east area during Christmas Day 25/12/2013 around 1pm.. The place was packed and we waited half an hour to get our seat. You place your order at the counter then you get your table no.. The cafe is quite small and can only fit not more than 15 table.. The food and service was good.. However, the poached egg were overcooked on the day.. The must try is hot chocolate which the taste is just perfect in my opinion.. Not too sweet..
