Abacus (S$8.50)
A traditional Hakka dish, with balls made of yam, stirred fried with mushrooms, garlic and shallots. The version here was great as one really can taste the yam in it.

Not forgetting its Soon Kueh (S$1), Ku Cai Kueh (S$1), Bamboo Shoot Kueh (S$1.30) which came in slightly translucent coloured and chewy skin. The bamboo shoot version was quite a rare find and came stuffed with strips of bamboo shoots in it.

Poh Cheu sells many kinds of handmade kuehs such as Ang Ku Kueh, Soon kueh, Png kueh, Ku Chai Kueh, Bamboo shoot kueh, Abacus seeds & glutinous rice. There are different fillings of Ang Ku Kueh ($0.80 each) like Yam, Durian, Peanut, Green tea, salted tau sar, Sesame, mango etc. My favourite filling is Peanut. It is very yummy with chunks of peanut bits & the sweetness is just nice to my liking. The Ku Kueh skin is soft, sticky & chewy. Salted bean filling is very yummy too.Soon kueh ($0.80 each)

Soon kueh ($0.80 each) are very tasty also with generous turnip fillings. Png kueh fillings are mainly glutinous rice with mushroom, dried shrimps & peanuts. The glutinous rice is of the right texture with a delightful softness & fragrance. It goes well with the usual thick black sauce & their special chilli sauce.

The abacus seeds are moulded into bite sized then boiled before stir-fried with ingredients like mushroom & dried shrimps to give it the desirable taste. It is then garnished with dried shallots & chopped coriander before served. This is my first time eating abacus seeds & I must really give a thumb up.

Overall all their kueh are really superb! We really love it except the long queue

so i settled for second best.

the soon kueh with turnip.

it's all handmade. the outer rice skin down to the fillings that are fried at the stall fresh every morning. now what;s the difference? the bamboo shoots are crunchier and have a much nicer bite. They also cost 20 cents more per piece. Otherwise, this one is also full on fillings, replacing bamboo shoot with shredded turnip and the rest is all the same, shredded red carrots and black fungus. mmm!

drizzle on their sweet black sauce and a dollop of chilli paste to boot.

simple and so satisfying.

In fact the whole shop to themselves. They are not able to commence business at this new outlet yet because they were not able to recruit more staff at the moment. I spoke to the lady who took my orders to reconfirm that they have a new outlet and she told me that its almost ready but lack of manpower. Also coming up with a few new snacks at the new shop. I hope to see it up and going by my next visit and try new snacks at the same time.

Famous for their handmade Ang Ku Kueh and Soon Kueh , Glutinous Rice, Abacus, Rice Cake, Yam Kueh etc .Standard of food remain unchanged. Queue still the same especially during peak hours.

When I arrived at the coffesshop there were about ten people ahead of me and it takes about 25 minutes
before my order.

The peanut filling is dense and every bite is full of peanut goodness. Crunchy sugared peanut bits. It's my idea of a perfect peanut pancake filling.

The skin is oily but thankfully so, because even after refrigeration, just thaw it and it tastes just like it does when first bought.

Don't try to microwave it. Spoils the entire kueh.

At just 70 cents. Kee chiew!

The soon kueh's filling is very fragrant and it is a mixture of shredded carrots, mang guang, black fungus and shrimps fried with garlic. The taste is really nice, the filling is not soggy and some of the mang guang is still crunchy. As for the yam kueh, it is also made with pure yam. There is no flour added. The mashed yam filling has shrimps and mushrooms and it is really tasty as well. It is very hard to find yam kuehs and soon kuehs of such standard any longer, so I will always come back to Poh Cheu to buy it. If you are not eating it immediately, it can be placed in the fridge and made hot the next morning.

Accompanied with the sweet black sauce and chilli paste.

Most of the rice cakes that we purchased from other outlets are factory made and the texture of the skin is thick and stodgy which can easily cause indigestion.

How do you distinguish a good "Peng Kueh" from the rest is when the rice cake is deep fried the skin does not break easily.

Poh Cheu handmade Ang Ku Kueh at Alexendra is very popular with foodies and for good reason. The ang ku kuehs were indeed excellent and have won rave reviews from many others. Besides the traditional peanut and red bean paste flavours, they also have black sesame flavours amongst many others. Priced at 70 cents, this is definitely a delightful treat for those who like sweet desserts. The ang ku kuehs were quite big as well.

My verdict for the AKK : Chewy thin skin filled with tasty green bean paste, sweet red bean paste, and they are generous with their fillings. Probably one of the best I’ve tasted.

The soon kueh was delicious, chewy and perfectly wrapped and packaged nicely with sincerity.

I would definitely come back again whenever I’m in the area!

Soon Kueh. I usually ordered at least 5 of them to have it packed nicely in a box. The size of the soon kueh is not particularly big. The skin is rather translucent with a certain level of chewiness. Auntie always scattered handful of sesame seeds on it after she done packing them in the box. There are 2 types of filling : turnips and bamboo shoots. I only and always go for the turnips filling as i could not quite appreciate the strange taste of the bamboo shoots. The filling consists of turnips and a handful of dried shrimps in it.

I ever ordered the bamboo shoot filling once but i did not like it enough to finish it.

This is definitely one of the better Soon Kueh i ever tasted.

Glutinous Rice Cake. Unlike the Soon Kueh, Glutinous Rice Cake has already been packed into 5 in a box. These boxes of Glutinous Rice Cake were displayed at the stall for self-service. The skin is not too thick with a desirable chewiness. The filling is mainly glutinous rice with mushroom, dried shrimps and peanuts. The glutinous rice is of the right texture with a delightful softness and fragrance.

It is served with the usual thick black sauce and their special chilli sauce. A request for extra chilli and black sauce would be charged for a cost. Same type of black sauce and chilli sauce are given with the Soon Kueh too. The black sauce is rather thick and slightly sweet in taste. I personally felt it complemented the Soon Kueh better than the Glutinous Rice Cake. The chilli goes well with both though.

Ang Ku Kueh. Their Ang Ku Kueh came in different types of flavor including durian, mango and peach. I tried it once for experience sake. Though no particularly strong like or dislike, it still got me to stick to the traditional flavors like the peanuts and salted bean. The skin of these Ang Ku Kueh is of the right thickness with just the right chewiness as well. The filling is nicely done too to give it a well-balanced sweetness. Both the peanuts and salted bean are equally good.

These Ang Ku Kueh are easily one of the best in Singapore.

Abacus Seeds. It is not a secret that i am absolutely crazy with their Abacus Seeds. These abacus seeds still retained a nice amount of yam taste. It is moulded into the bite sized then boiled it first before stir-fried with ingredients like mushroom and dried shrimps to give it the desirable taste. It is then garnished with dried shallots and chopped coriander before served. These abacus seeds came into 2 sizes : the really big box and the usual round container. As there is no one in the family enjoys eating it so i always ended up going for the smaller box.

This traditional kueh stall is definitely the gem of Bukit Merah estate.

The picture shows the durian, red bean, salted bean and green tea flavours. The green tea is always my favourite as I love all things green tea and their green tea Ang Ku Kueh has a very fragrant taste of green tea. The Ang Ku Kueh skin has green tea taste as well, so it is not just colouring added to the Ang Ku Kueh skin, but really there is a difference in taste.

The durian is also good, the filling has just the right amount of durian flavour without being overwhelming. Expect 20 - 30min or even longer wait if you go during peak hours.

The regular soon kuehs are meant to be made of bamboo shoot but are instead usually filled with turnip. The bamboo shoots imparted a firmer, springier bite and was much more interesting than the regular turnip types. Peng kueh was moist and fragrant. Ku chye kueh was smallish, and the filling finely chopped. All had delicate, thin skin harking to years of handmade goodness. Abacus was ok, I'd have preferred more yam and not so much oil to lubricate the base. Glutinous rice was on the firmer side. While I did not feel especially wowed by it, my colleague thought that it was more delicious than the overly sticky and soft kinds sold outside.

I'd be back again, if not for the fact that it's horribly far away. Parking is a breeze, given that Poh Cheu is located within an industrial estate.
