Hirashi Chuka Ramen ($9.90)
Cold Ramen. Light and Refreshing.
Really cooling to have. The ramen was soaked in shoyu dressing, topped with shredded cucumber, omelette, crab stick, sesame seeds and seaweed. No matter how I mixing, the dish still tasted quite bland to me. The ramen could not soak up the flavour of the dressing.

However immediately after I had filled a glass of iced lemon tea from the dispenser, the machine was cleaned up for the day. It was not even 9pm yet. Felt being short changed.

The gyoza was served with a chilli oil shoyu mixture. It was juicy and meaty.
Overall food was just so-so. Just the place looked cute.

The colourful wall mural made up for an interesting eating experience and the ramen took about 6 minutes to arrive. The ramen noodle here was tender & chewy and it was good. Mrupupup got a choice of regular fatty or lean char siew meat. The wonderful thing was the shop gave one full egg with nice yolk inside! The soup was yummy and the best thing was it had no MSG!!!!! Mrupupup hates the after taste of MSG which makes one super in need of water after eating ramen. Some shops in Singapore selling ramen could have so much MSG that Mrupupup would be in need of water for the whole day!

Signature Tonkotsu Ramen - Mrupupup drank every drop. Slurp!!! Mrupupup felt not thirsty indicating that the soup was pure goodness without any silly short cuts in making the soup. Waaahhhhh, Mrupupup has changed to Ramen Monster!!!!!

With flatter wallets after all the CNY splurging we walked further into the mall to Ramen Monster for our ramen fix. The Pork Curry Ramen ($8.90 nett ala carte) was surprisingly good. Concentrated toothsome curry gravy with generous slices of pork that had been braised in the homemade gravy and big chunks of carrot, white radish & potato which added fibre and sweetness to the dish. It is obvious that the curry was of wholesome homemade quality - unlike many Japanese restaurants like Ajisen and Ichiban whose curry had a grainy residue and bits of carrots and potatoes, indicating that the curry had been prepared using factory produced curry mixes. Curry chicken ramen is also available at the same price. We topped up $3 for the set meal which includes three pieces of panfried homemade gyoza and free flow of green tea or iced lemon tea from the self service drinks bar. There is no service charge here and all menu prices are GST-inclusive.

after the meal. Here is a Japanese restaurant where nobody greets you when you step in or leave after your meal. There is no wall menu or anything on the tables & we figured we had to order at the counter which was staffed by a dour obasan with shoulder length wavy hair. When enquiring about the ramen challenge she pointed to a big empty bowl above an ice cream counter and said "equal to three normal bowls". The two guys went for the huge bowl ($20.90 nett) while the rest of us ordered regular portions which were priced between $8.90 and $12.90 each. Ok we can accept the nonchalant service if there's no service charge & GST on the listed menu prices ;-). Add $2 for self service free flow of iced lemon tea or hot green tea.

The colourful wall mural made up for the rather expressionless staff & we oogled at the wall of fame featuring glossy polaroid shots of those who proved themselves to be ramen monsters, grinning cheesily witheir vouchers & empty bowls.
Our ramen took about 15 minutes to arrive. Their regular portions are smaller than the bowls served at Ajisen, Menya or Kazokutei, so if you're able to eat fast, slurp soup quickly & coming with a growling stomach, the ramen challenge is perfectly doable, as the happy faces on the wall of fame have proven. So who says there is no free lunch in SG for non-China nationals ;-). My two friends did it, while the rest of us took our time to do justice to the ramen which was very delicious. The ramen here is less Q & chewy than that served at Ajisen, it was nice that we had a choice of regular fatty chasiu or lean chasiu, both versions were void of any awful colouring & were meaty without any porky aftertaste. The soup was creamy without being greasy and the

fact that I slurped up every drop is proof of its tastiness - as I usually eat the noodles, have only a few spoonfuls of soup (unless it is laksa gravy) & abandon the rest. The only other place where I finish till the last drop the soup that comes with the noodles is at a beef noodle hawker stall (Hainan Xing Zhou Beef Noodles). Even some of the tasty prawn osup at Beach Road Prawn Noodles Shop gets left behind. While all of us did not waste a single drop.of Ramen Monster's soup, the real test came after the meal: none of us felt thirsty indicating that the soup was free of any MSG & it was pure goodness without any short cuts.

I am seriously considering doing the ramen monster during my next visit; I can easily pack the ramen soup if If I fail the challenge.

Due to unforeseen circumstances and a last minute birthday celebration for a collegue, I patronised this dull ramen place. The service at the counter is good I must say, just that the food needs alot of improvement. The negi ramen is surprisingly better than the spicy ramen I had the last time, the soup broth is okay.

Ramen lovers, please avoid this place.

The soup is inferior compared to others. Not thick, no fragrance.
My spicy ramen was spicy due to the chilli padi added into the soup. Very chinese-like style.
The cha shu meat is dry and quite tough to bite, not to the extent that you must use alot of force but you'll know what I mean if you eat ramen long enough,
The tamago is a joke, it's a typical egg though it oozes a little. The egg was white in color

Stay far, unless you are into cheaply priced ramen going at as low as $8++. Oh, no service charge too at this outlet

Was on my way to TCC Novena Square when I was lured by the cute decor of Ramen Monster to take a second look.

I should have followed my instincts that "cute" and "ramen" don't go well together. But I admit, $7.90 for a tonkotsu ramen sounds tempting, I was hoping to find a cheap joint for that cloudy-bone-boiled-for-hours-soup that I so love.

There was no one else that the restaurant when I visited at 5pm. I ordered the tonkontsu ramen, which looked so appetising on the menu with a pair of beautiful onsen runny braised egg.

There are a choice of noodles: Kyushu(thin) or Hokkaido(thick and spring)and cha shu: Original or Lean.

I was impressed that I can have a choice of noodles. Add $3 and you can get 3pcs gyoza and free flow drinks. Added them up as I was hungry at that time.

The bowl of ramen presented to me, look nothing like the picture. The whole egg, uncut was dunked deep under the noodles, the cha shu pieces looks like pieces of unwanted meat, all irregular in sizes, with thick layers of fat and not braised.

I couldn't smell any aroma either, in fact it was so disappointing that I couldn't even bother to take a pic of my food (which i usually do) and proceed to dip my spoon in to try a sip of the soup. Salty, yet bland.

Next i put in my chopsticks and realised the noodles quantity is pretty small. A little disappointed as I was very hungry. Bite test was ok, but it tasted very alkali and just like the instant ramen i bought in Tokyo. Lousy ones I must add.

But I have to admit the gyoza is OKAY.

Food bad, service bad.

On a lazy afternoon, we were attracted by the adorable cartoons of ramen monsters by this little shop at the corner of Velocity, Novena Square. We dropped in Ramen Monster without much expectations and, fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised…

THE FOOD:

With a choice between thin and thick noodles, we chose thin for the char siew ramen and thick for the tonkotsu ramen. Both types of noodles were al dente and pretty springy.

First came the char siew ramen ($10.90) with pretty lean meat soaked in thick broth is nonetheless succulently delicious. On the other hand, the tonkotsu ramen ($7.90) was a tad disappointing – the meat was slightly too tough and not fatty enough.

Portion wise, the dishes at Ramen Monster are a tad smaller than usual but just right for us girls. Guys may need to upsize ($3) for gyoza and a drink.

We later heard that the Spicy Ramen is good from the table next to us and that there's no MSG in the broth – a rare treat dining outside.

In all, the ramen at Ramen Monster wouldn't be the best or comparable to that of ramen masters at Santouka or Ippudo. However, it is good enough as an affordable lunch nearby office.

THE MOOD:

The bright and colourful shop is peddled by the cute cartoon ramen monsters donned on the wall. Tables and chairs are basic, and easily moved to accommodate big groups by the helpful staff.

I went with my friend to eat Ramen at Ramen Monster! The Pork ramen at Ramen Monster is fantastic. The egg is well-cooked but soft to sink my teeth into. The most important thing, is the broth is splendid. I also like that the pork slices are rich, thick and succulent. I love ramen as it is springy and delicious. The combinationis just superb! It is quite affordable as it costs about $12.90. The seaweed is a great appetizer as it improves my appetite! Bon Appetit !
