As I went into the cafe, I was kind of shock with its crowd. Just imagine a place without signage, this cafe is surely doing good! The place was furnished in the industrial theme, dimmed but cosy with Menu attached to the wall. If you are looking for a great variety of food, then this place isn't quite for you as their menu is short and sweet, straight forward.

Be prepared to share tables with someone as I was told that the place was bustling with Cafehoppers during the weekends especially. Long Black is served in Hot and Cold with a dollar difference. Long Black has nothing to rave about as it quite ordinary. Perhaps we should have ordered their signature drink "Wicked".

While the non coffee me prefers Matcha-Toned, it reminded me of my capsule drink from Dolce Gusto. The fun part about this is that those Green Matcha were sticked onto the wall of the glass and in order to experience the drink fully, I have to make a good stir in the cup.

Choice of Toast can be chosen, either Sourdough or seeded with Butter & Jam Lady Jam. We had something kind of mix and match on the menu with Eggs on our toast, scambled added with Pork Sausage and Portobello mushroom. Pretty ordinary.

Dirty Ronin does look dirty spreading on the Sandwiches and I guess perhaps this is how they name it after. These are quite challenging for fork and knife and I decided to use it bare hands. Sandwiches ingredients includes Chorizo (pork sausage), Emmental Cheese, soft egg, Miso Mayo and lettuce. The sandwiches wasn't quite for me as it was quite hard.

Overall, I felt that the place is more for coffee lover and nothing much about the food as menu was not extensive for us.

Cafe's lightings are dark and comfortable, with yellow lights shining on wooden tables. One gripe is that they do have uncomfortable chairs which make you feel like you're sinking down into the seat. But I got used to it pretty quickly.

Nice stool seats for 2-3 people lining the corner of the cafe. These seats are more comfortable than those at the proper tables.

Warning: It gets really crowded from 11.15am onwards. When I got there, the wait staff shared that the cafe was only open from 10.30am.

The wait staff shared that their signature food items included the Brioche French Toast, Scrambled Eggs on Toast, 'Big in Japan' Curry Rice and Dirty Ronin Sandwich. All are substantial servings. Unfortunately, we weren't able to try the Curry Rice as it was not available at that time.

Instead, we went with the Brioche French Toast ($14.50) and Scrambled Eggs on Toast ($9). (I LOVE breakfast.

For my scrambled eggs on toast, I added the portobello mushroom (add $3.50) and the Pork sausage (add $4.50). It was a very satisfying breakfast. But the bread was somewhat not toasted well enough.

My friend went with the Brioche French Toast which contained braised apple, bacon, hazelnut butter and syrup. Does it sound very sweet?

It is. My friend said it was too sweet, but the salty bacon made it better as it balanced the sweetness better. But overall, the toast was nice and fluffy. This dish is very good for those with a sweet tooth, but I do have to warn that this dish is really sinful!

For the drinks, we took their signature Matcha-Tone (Green Tea latte, $5.50 - image below) and Wicked (Minted Mocha, $5.50).

I had my Wicked to-go. Although I'm a green tea latte lover, but to be frank, I did prefer their Wicked over their Matcha-Tone! While the Matcha-Tone was not too sweet (which was just great for me), the mint infused mocha (image below) had been so refreshing and delicious that I might have just branded it as one of my favourite drinks!

The drinks were smooth and I did enjoy it very much. This was the point-scorer for me in this cafe. I highly recommend the drink, it was really wicked!

(Haha, geddit? Geddit? Wicked is wicked!... ok, sorry.)

My Iced Wicked - aka mint mocha (SGD$7.50) was served first - a delicious concoction of my favorites - coffee, chocolate and mint. It was a refreshing drink - chilled and the hint of cool mint was a welcome anytime.
The highlight was my food - the Brioche French Toast with braised apple, bacon, hazelnut butter and syrup (SGD$14.50). The thick slices of French toast were respledent of the buttery flavor, and I loved the soft-sweetness, having been draped in mouth-watering syrup. The bacon slices were dry and crispy - exactly the way I loved them. The braised apple was soft and sweet, and the hazelnut butter added a touch of delight to my bread. It was yummy.
Now, *Katherine's Scrambled Eggs on Toast add Pork Sausage (SGD$13.50) may look deceptively simple, but the toast slices were crispy. The scrambled eggs were scattered with a coat of black pepper, adding a touch of spiciness to its smooth wholesomeness. The pork sausage was a surprise - it was chewy in a fresh way, and it was delicious without the "fake meat" flavor most sausages sport.

Stepping into Ronin, I felt that I was entering another world. I described it as entering a black hole in the wall. The cafe has a relatively dark ambience with ceiling lights and filament bulbs to light up the place. The concept of the cafe is like modern industrial themed. At the centre of the cafe, there is a huge round table, inviting patrons to dine in communal style. They do have smaller tables around as well. I really like the whole vibe of the cafe.
Ronin did not have a physical menu when we were there. So, the staff verbally told us what they served. Besides toasts, sandwiches and eggs, they also have a variety of desserts for those who are looking for some sweets. They are displayed on the glass display in front of the counter.
We ordered a Flat White ($4.20) and Wicked Mocha ($6.50). The flat white is quite fragrant and aromatic. Wicked Mocha is actually Mint with coffee and a dash of chocolate. The mint flavour was really very strong! I would say the drink is of an acquired taste - really wicked. Do give it a try if you're up to try something really different.
We ordered Scrambled Eggs with toast ($9) and added Portobello Mushroom (additional $3.50) , Sausage (Additional $4.50) and Avocado (additional $3) as the sides. The scrambled eggs was one of the best we have ever eaten. The eggs were so fluffy, had the right amount of butter and was really good! I especially like the portobello mushroom. Okay, I guess I am biased. Because I am a huge fan of portobello and having a whole slice to myself is just too awesome!
Salted Caramel Brownie ($4) was our chosen dessert. We liked that the brownie was slightly crispy on the outside and moist within. It's a good brownie but we couldn't really taste the Salted Caramel flavor.
We feel the prices of the food are quite affordable. With no GST and Service Charge, I will think Ronin is really value for money. I do hope that their standard of food remains to be good and I look forward to my next visit to try their Matcha Latte!

Ever since I moved to Singapore from Hong Kong early this year, I have been missing bits and pieces of Hong Kong. A friend who I've known for more than a decade visited me recently and since she had visited all the tourist-worthy places of Singapore, we decided to settle for a cafe that has no signboard, no food and drink menus, no website and no telephone number located along the Hongkong Street and started our never ending conversations.
The same folks behind The Plain and The Bravery, opened their third cafe "Ronin" in Singapore and the name actually refers to a samurai with no lord or master. When we walked in we were ushered by a friendly staff to our table. The rather dark and mysterious atmosphere led me to ask the staff, "What is the name of this place?", just to make sure that I am at the right place.

After we sat down, the same friendly staff came to take our orders. Our natural reaction was to request for the drinks menu but he replied that they don't have a drink menu and he started listing the various drinks they serve. Personally, I find that it is quite a tedious affair for customers to carefully listen and spot what we want through his long sentence. We ended up ordering a cup of flat white and green tea.

After taking our drink orders, I further asked for a food menu. Again, he claimed that they don't have a food menu and began mumbling his long list, this time it's a lot harder as the list contained a lot more ingredients and it's just like playing a memorising game. At last, my friend was quite impatient and decided on the first one he mentioned which was all-day-breakfast. Not criticising on his service nor not having a cafe menu, but rather it would be more appreciated if they can inform us beforehand that they don't have food and drink menus.

The moment when the dish was served, I was quite surprised with the variety of food that was on the plate. While I should be seeing some mushrooms, sausages, tomatoes, etc that an all-day breakfast should contain, I only saw scrambled eggs and three different slices of bread that were made with different ingredients. Surprisingly, the toasted bread went perfectly well with the half-cooked silky soft creamy scrambled eggs especially when you consume them together. I must say they looked very simple but everything was done correctly. However, does the price of $9 do justice on the quality and quantity of food?

I was amazed by the beautiful latte art that was served in front of me. Ronin brews the same Genovese coffee blend as the other two cafes and I particularly loved the full bodied brew with balanced acidity and bitterness in the coffee which were neutralised by the velvety milk.

Green Tea - $5/-

I didn't get to try the green tea, but my friend said it tasted like normal tea.
We visited after the peak lunch period on a weekday but surprisingly the cafe was almost full. The patrons who came to order their brew seemed to be really familiar with the place and were not quite half as clueless as us when we first step foot into the cafe.

I went to the cashier without knowing how much the food and drinks were, and we were actually asked by the staff about our orders. I can't imagine how the cafe would survive during its peak hours as it would be super labour intensive when the staffs have to repeatedly explain their menu and forget what the customers have ordered which I think this is not cost efficient at all. They seriously need to look into this issue. Nevertheless, Ronin is a cafe worth visiting in terms of food and drink quality, especially for the working adults who work around the area to treat as a little getaway from the hustle and bustle of their work stations.

Ronin uses the same Genovese blend as The Bravery and The Plain. Low acidity, super strong and aromatic. Love the crema. Latte goes for $4.20.
Do not miss out on the Matchatone ($5.50)! This is by far my favorite matcha drink. It is actually an intense matcha paste served with steamed milk. I love scrapping the green tea sludge and eating that instead of mixing it all in. Slurps.
We had the famed Dirty Ronin ($12). Hard sandwiches are so in these days. I enjoyed the crispy panini which has a nice crusty shell but it still maintained that fluffy porous texture inside. Servings are huge by the way. So this comes with a lightly spiced salty chorizo. How they get the meat so soft i have no idea but it is really more like spam (not the chinese Ma Ling sorta luncheon meat though). There's some miso mayo, fried egg and cheese in this. Taste wise it's not bad, though a different kinda lettuce would have been better.
The scrambled eggs ($9) have this amazing taste and texture. It's extremely milky but it's not the runny sort. However, it wasn't like the eggs were dry. Well.. it's like an egg pudding? Anyhoo, you gotta try it for yourself. It's perfect with the nicely buttered crunchy toast. Add on the freshly made sausage ($4.50) which comes in pork or lamb to satisfy your meat craving. Avocado and Portobello available as add ons too.
If you, like me, enjoy a sweet and savory combination, have the French Toast ($14), a fluffy and eggy brioche topped with fried bacon and crunchy and tart Granny Smith apples. Absolutely adored the maple butter! I could do with more bacon though. Oink.
We really enjoyed brunch at Ronin though it's really packed during brunch time. The waiting isn't too bad because the service is pretty good. The girls are really chirpy and friendly so it's great.

RONIN’s design theme supposedly seems to be of a feudal Japanese style with old rustic wheelbarrow-like tables and weathered wooden cabinets, though seemed a tad confused with industrial elements included as well. Currently it runs without a proper menu, but most items offered are sandwiches ranging from the sweet to the savoury. Also alike The Bravery, there is no obvious signage for the cafe. Coupled with the darkness within the cafe itself, it can be quite an easy to miss the place if you are not looking hard enough for it.

Dirty Ronin ($12.00) is one of the specialties of RONIN. A sandwich packed with vegetables, cheese, spicy chorizo and egg with creamy miso dressing, it is definitely a sheer enjoyment for one who loves savoury sandwiches. The spicy chorizo though slightly dry and a wee bit thin, gives the dish a good degree of fiery kick that would be much appreciated by those who fancies spicy food. The crispness of the toasted bread just adds on to the overall goodness.

A quirky twist from the usual French Toast ($14.00), caramelized apples and bacon are also added to the dish. The bread was fluffy and accompanied by the maple syrup it was drenched in makes a combination that does not even come close to sickening though it may seem sweet. Large chunks of caramelized apples are included, and gave it a great chew with its sweetness and juiciness. The inclusion of Caramelized Bacon may not hit with some people, but I thought it gave the dish a interesting dimension of taste where sweet meets savoury.

No different from The Bravery and The Plain, RONIN uses the same Genovese blends as the affiliated cafes. Do expect the same quality coffee served at The Bravery and The Plain, as per the Flat White ($4.20) and Mocha ($4.20) we have ordered.
