I brought my girlfriend to Sarang Korean Restaurant for dinner to celebrate her birthday. The atmosphere was really nice especially at night. We opted for the outdoor seating, the wind was really strong so it was really cooling. We ordered some Korean chicken if I am not wrong the name is shooting star, very weird name they have. The chicken was kind of spicy, and the portion was not a lot. It was not inclusive of rice so we had to add another $2.50 for a bowl of rice and two side dishes. But it

With such nice scenery at night, it was worth the price!

Yes, there is this new Korean restaurant at Orchard Central, newly opened in late Oct 2010, called Sarang (사랑). I guess u know by now Sarang means "love" in Korean ;) Heard that this was the restaurant that catered food to all the Kpop stars & crew of the Korean Pop Nite concert recently. We reached there at about 9pm on a Saturday & it was packed! We had to take our seats at the bar counter for sometime before indoor seats were available. The outdoor seating didn't look comfortable, unless u don't mind sitting on stools (bar counter seats had backrest though) & could withstand the funky music played
. But of course if u sit outdoors on a cool windy day/night, the view looks good, overlooking CentrePoint & beyond.

Here's my verdict of the food & beverage we ordered:

Sikhae
It is a traditional sweet Korean rice beverage, usually served as a dessert. However, this disappointing drink, costing us $4++ each, didn't give me the sweet homemade feeling at all. It even tasted weird & bland.

Mandu Tangsu
This is actually pan-fried dumplings, with sweet & sour sauce dip. It's tasty, nicely fried but expensive, 6 pcs for $8.80++! We preferred to eat it without the sweet & sour sauce.

Under The Sea
It's actually seafood & silky beancurd hotpot. I had a bit of the soup & yes, quite tasty, with many pcs of tofu. This costs $12.80++.

Tteokbokgi
This is the spicy rice cake ($6.80++) which we thought is a must-try at Korean restaurants, just to "test their standard" hee. But well, it's quite disappointing. The rice cake was not chewy, but hard. The sauce tasted a bit weird too, not the usual traditional spicy rice cake sauce we are familiar with.

Budaejigae
It is Army Stew, famous in Korea, comprises of kimchi, sausage, rice cake & pork served in a spicy hotpot. Yes it was indeed quite spicy and delicious.

The disappointing fact of the food & beverage served was for the prices they charge, the portions were pretty small, e.g. the stews came in shallow hotpots, so u don't really have a lot of space for the soup or ingredients.

The good thing was out of 5 items we ordered, 3 were somewhat to our liking though it's not really traditional Korean food. In addition, there was 1 male waiter who exhibited good service skills, without us asking for when the Army Stew would be ready (all other items already came), he proactively came to us to say it'd b ready soon. Shortly after. the Army Stew really arrived.

All in all, I concluded that maybe this restaurant is trying to be innovative by "revolutionize" the traditional Korean food, so unless u don't mind the "revolution" with a not-so-wallet-friendly price tag, perhaps u may give this restaurant a miss. If not this may be the "hip" Korean restaurant for u to patronize.
