I was so excited when I found Saveur's new location!! Thank goodness it has not closed down! ^__^I used to go to its original stall at this kopitiam (opposite 112 Katong) along Joo Chiat/East Coast road and was really disappointed to realize that it was no longer there. It may not have offered the best ambiance, but surely it dished out good and cheap French food that nothing else matters. I was feeling perplexed then when it 'disappeared' as I thought that it has a good number of followers. Pic

Pictures that I've uploaded here were taken when I visited Saveur at its old site. Dun worry, they are still on the menu! Heehee

Confit of Duck with Orange Segments and Saute Shittake

Can you believe that I took these pictures in a kopitiam? The presentation was really impressive, considering the pricing.

The duck confit was done perfectly with a crispy outer skin and yet with tender succulent meat that you probably wont need a knife. The mash potato was another killer, so smooth & creamy that you can just swallow it.

The chicken roulade was another delight. And if you are thinking that the rice was too heavy for dinner, nothing of the sort! The basmati rice was surprisingly light and yet flavorful.

Overall, it was really an enjoyable dinner full of surprises in terms of the presentation & quality and yet with such reasonable pricing that its totally unbelievable!

Saveur serves quality French cuisine at exceptionally low prices. For example, the Duck Leg confit is only $10.90 (WUUT?!), while their signature Angel's hair pasta with sakura ebi is only $4.90. The duck leg is crispy on the outside and tender inside. Pork Belly is also quite good, paired with runny poached egg but slightly gamey if you don't like the taste of uncooked egg. Portions are not very big, but definitely quite worth the price. The menu is simple and short, with premium dishes as well

Portions are not very big, but definitely quite worth the price. The menu is simple and short, with premium dishes as well like the Beef Tenderloin if you want to splurge.

Don't expect a large wine collection as well, as they keep their list very simple.

)

The awesome angel hair pasta with tiger prawn and lumpfish caviar ($6.90) is what I was raving about! It was cooked in the most interesting manner! The thin strands of angel hair were very unlike the silky version i’m used to – instead they were very al dente, with a firm bite, that was refreshingly delicious! the prawns were cooked really nicely as well. and the caviar OMG. they just explode with a burst of flavour in your mouth! and together with the little green chilis (i think they’re chilis, right? i couldn’t really tell), all the various dimensions were brought together beautifully. i had to keep myself from gobbling the entire thing down because i wanted to savour every bit of it properly.

The duck confit with orange segments and saute shitake ($9.90) was done beautifully as well. i loved how the skin was crispy with just the right amount of fat to make it juicy, while the meat inside was super tender! i wonder how they did it! I’m not really a huge fan of confit, so I wasn’t super crazy over it (unlike the pastaaaa
heh) but it was still good! The mushrooms were really juicy and flavourful as well. ohoh! and the mash ^^ nice and buttery. yumms.

The dessert sadly, was a letdown for me
but only because i dont like the taste of anything almond-flavoured. Sighhhs. Such a pity! the pistachio panna cotta ($6.90) sounded absolutely delightful. But it was just tainted by the almond taste! >
Ddon’t get me wrong, i love almond NUTS, but anything else with the almond flavouring (like almond paste/jelly omg…) is just not my thing. Okay i’m biased
But oh well! If you like almond, i’m sure you’ll love this!

Anyway, this place is super awesome. it’s a must try. God forbid even more people crowding up the place, but honestly I dont think it’s gonna make a difference because the queue is so long already! But dont let that deter you, try it!
Tell me how the chicken roulade is if you tried it!! That was something else I was interested in. By the way, the portions are slightly smaller than usual, but I quite liked how it let us try a greater variety ;)

Capellini pasta tossed with chili oil, fine-chopped konbu and sakura ebi with minced pork sauce. The pasta was cooked al dente and coated with just the right amount of sauce. For some strange reasons, the mushy meat sauce was reminiscent of a chicken mayo spread. That aside, the dried shrimps added a nice bite to the dish without overpowering it like how the usual hei bi (dried shrimps) can be.

Rib eye steak ($22.90 for 180g): Rib eye steak served on truffle mash. Well seasoned and flavourful, the steak was a decent considering the price. Unfortunately, it was a little too rare for medium rare doneness. Though it was a steak dish, the truffle mash stole the limelight. Creamy and fragrant, it certainly was a delight just eating it on its own.

Beef tenderloin ($24.90): Beef tenderloin with potato au gratin (pronounced grah-tan), carrot puree, button mushrooms, red radish, baby carrot and beef jus. The steak was well seasoned and sufficiently rested, evident in the juices that was retained despite being cooked to medium doneness (as requested by my friend).

Strawberries and cream ($9.90): Basil ice cream, macerated strawberries, meringues and strawberry leather. The basil ice cream paired surprisingly well with the sweet strawberries and doubled up as a palate cleanser too. The meringues were a nice play on the textures, and I particularly liked it with the strawberry leather.

Overall, this is the place to go for decent food with a French twist in a relaxed and casual setting. Not forgetting warm service and affordable prices too. That said, do go to the restaurant with reasonable expectations and bear in mind the amount you are paying.

The salmon literally melts in my mouth when i ate it. Duck Confit! It only costs $10.90++ and it is really delicious. As compared to other restaurant (eg. Saveur offers affordable French cuisine in a causal setting. The wait can be quite long during dinner or lunch times. The angel hair pasta was quite popular and I found it quite nice, having been tossed in olive oil and added mini shrimps. It is also reasonably priced at $3.90. The duck leg confit with mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms and orange ($10.90) was also pretty good with a crispy exterior and tender meat.

PORK: Pork belly served with creamy green lentils, soft boiled egg & natural jus.

Pork had a good crusty skin. If you arent the kind that like fatty meat...nah dont go for it. Lentils were good! But not feeling hence the meal is actually quite a small portion.

French cuisine for the masses, Saveur definitely lived up to its name. I was quite skeptical initially, thinking it's just another fad cafe without much focus on the food since french cuisine and masses were two that didn't seem to go along very well. Gosh, was I impressed after a visit to their Purvis Street branch!

A piece of advice, don't go on a super empty stomach unless you're going very early at about 5.30pm, before the place opens. We went at about 7ish and had to wait for about an hour still, and even at about 8plus, there was still quite a long queue outside!

The first dish up, having very high expectations especially since we've queued for more than an hour. It didn't fail my expectations at all! The poached egg was very well done, with golden egg yolk running out after giving it a prick and it blended very well with the beans underneath. The beans tasted very familiar, like it's been soaked in braised meat stew. Coming to the highlight of the dish, gosh, the pork belly was indeed very well done! The skin was so heavenly, crispy in every single bite, and it was roasted to the perfect level where there wasn't a bitter aftertaste and the 'jelat' feeling after eating it. The meat was also very well-cooked, perhaps over slow fire, where the juices were locked in and it remained very tender. I must say, I was very impressed by this dish alone!

This is my favourite dish so far! A first taste of the mash just got me so addicted that I almost forgot about the duck! The mash was very finely blended, melting in your mouth almost immediately and it was very well mixed with a slight salted flavour that it was good on its own, without any gravy. The duck was impressively well done, crispy on the outside after being slightly pan-fried I suppose and the insides were extremely tender! Not a fan of duck meat usually, I was won over by how well this dish was done, with very juicy and tender meat that doesn't stick into the gaps of your teeth at all (unlike the way duck meat usually does).

For the lazy eaters, don't worry, it's done so well that the meat is easily dislodged from the bones. Great news for mushroom lovers, don't underestimate the power of that small piece of Shitake. It's so fresh and well cooked that the flavour of every piece is locked in and bursts in your mouth! Overwhelming mushroom taste, I would say! Ohyes, don't forget about that piece of orange, it's really amazing. Eat it together with the duck and mash, it gives a refreshing burst of flavours and texture! A very good combination that I strongly recommend!

I was rather disappointed with this actually. Perhaps it was after two very impressive dishes that I had very high expectations already. The beef was done well, very tender and well-marinated. However, I didn't exactly like the parts of the beef used for the dish. It felt like the lousier portions that were minced together but that's just my preference for the chunkier beef parts. Also, I'd expected at least a little taste of wine for the traditional Beef Burguignon but there were no traces of that at all. An okay dish if you don't expect much, though I felt that it paled in comparison with the two dishes served prior.

Well, I'm a potato lover so this really sat well with me! Abit too salty initially but it gets you hooked. With well chosen potatoes used, it didn't have a tinge of the raw taste like some do even after cooking.. Thinly sliced and boiled to the right level, not too mushy nor too hard, it was greatly complemented by the thin crispy layer on top.

The very first thing that came to our mind was, where's the tiger prawn? Expecting the ones at the top to be a prelude to what we were going to find hidden inside the pasta, it was a downer to find that well, that's really it. It wasn't nothing like tiger prawns, in fact it tasted very dull and dead, an indicator of the freshness. Some bits were slightly more succulent but still disappointing.

The Angel Hair Pasta reminded me the likes of vermicelli or 'mee sua' tossed in olive oil. Expecting it to be al dente, it was a little overcooked, losing out the springy taste of pasta. I'm not an expert on caviar, just thought that it complemented the taste of the dish rather well. The price is probably worthwhile giving it a shot but not exactly a recommended dish!

A rather simple plate of dessert, I absolutely loved the combination! Made of different citrus flavours - a berries jelly, lime crushed ice, grapefruit, some odd flavoured jam and crushed wafers. Combining all these together, it was a very refreshing burst of flavours after several strong flavoured dishes! Indeed, the different textures made it surprising with every mouthful and every flavour of citrus was very well complemented. After a few mouthfuls, we decided to mix everything on the elevated side of the plate into the main 'pothole', making it seem like 'yusheng'. A very interesting dish with great refreshing combination!

Two awesome flavours together, how can I ever resist? A smooth paste of chocolate and hazelnut, it tasted somewhat like nutella but a less viscous version. Surprised with raspberries that were picked to add to the sweetness and a tinge of sour-ness, it was a great complemented with a different texture. Topped with coconut bits and nuts, it was a very interesting mix. Best of all, those are not chocolate wafers. A flake of very finely grinded crunchy bits (probably biscuits or digestives, it was too finely done that I couldn't really tell the ingredients used) coated with a layer of chocolate. Expecting it to break off into smaller parts like wafers, it melted in my hands almost immediately. A mouthful of everything was the absolute heavenly experience, with the plethora of textures and flavours bursting in your mouth. Take time to savour this dish, I was surprised by how it wasn't 'jelat' at all, like how I am usually sick of chocolate dishes.

The mixing bowl contained pistachio paste for its Pistachio Panna Cotta and the very friendly chef gave us a little just for sampling. I was rather impressed by how flavourful it was and usually the one avoiding pistachio, I actually wanted to try the dessert! Such is the benefit of sitting right next to the preparation area, you get to see real action going on and talk to them! It's a very homely feel and the chefs are just very keen to share about their work, so much that you can see their passion when they speak! I think that should be the soul of every food places, with chefs who believe in creating the total dining experience.

A place which I will definitely go back, to try the other dishes that I have yet to. Great food at affordable prices, I think it's worth a visit for sure! Best of all, I like how the place is continuously improving to suit its customers' taste buds. So if you've had a not-as-good tasting experience, perhaps pop by sometime later and give it another shot.

Decided to give the Pan Seared Sea Bass a try instead of having the usual Duck Confit at Saveur. Loved the little potatoes scattered around the plate, and the citrus pieces which gives a refreshing taste. The sea bass was fresh and meat was tender, with the skin pan fried till crispy. It would be a good alternative to the Duck Confit, although it costs slightly more. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Portion is bite-sized and I don't think it is really worth the price of $9.90. It could be slightly bigger though.
There are 2 types of foie gras on the menu so I will suggest you to get the $7.90 one if you're just looking to try out foie gras or to satisfy your cravings.

SAVEUR’S PASTA $4.90
The sakura ebi goes well with the pasta. It tasted somewhat like maggi mee, in a good way. For just $4.90, it is worth a try, but not a must try.

Duck leg confit, $10.90
This has got to be one of my favourite dishes there. The skin is crispy. The meat does not stick to the bones and is very tender at the thigh area. I love the sauté shiitake mushroom. It made a great combination together with the mashed potato and the duck confit.

Pan-seared sea bass $14.90
this dish did not win me over but it was a good dish nonetheless. I like how they add a little crabmeat on top of the diced potatoes.

CHOCOLATE & HAZELNUT $7.90
Creative presentation of the dish and pleasant combination of the hazelnuts, rice puffs and raspberries with the chocolate mousse. It would be a chore for one person to finish the whole dessert by yourself so do order this to share! The BF and I ordered this to share and it ended up with me struggling to finish it by myself despite me being a chocolate lover. If you like your food pretty, please do not stir/mix the dessert as it will end up looking like shit and spoiling your appetite (which was what my partner did lol).

Overall, Saveur is a good place to visit if you're craving for french food at affordable prices.

One hour into my French dinner and still I see that same crowd within this semi-causal bistro as I did back sometime ago. This “full-house” phenomenon is clearly evidence of their really affordable, nicely plated, lip-smacking if not highly relish French cuisine. Did I mention about the line of organized crowd phenomenon accumulating outside the doors as well?

Knowing all these phenomenons all too well from past experiences, arriving five minutes before the bistro is open for dinner at 6pm was the only solution to assure my five other partners of my famous phrase: “Today we’ll be having French!”

I know it’s rude to start without everyone but well, I just can’t resist having a few entrees for starters. My other dining partner and I went for the Mesclun Salad With Lemon Vinaigrette And Crispy Duck ($3.90). I found my bowl of green to be subtly refreshing though my partner kept her distance from the oranges.

Saveur’s Angel Hair Pasta With Sherry Minced Pork And Sakura Ebi ($3.90) tucked in a clean white bowl with hairs of an angel woven beautifully, laced in a puree of minced meat and Sherry wine mixture and then carefully sprinkled with a heap of petite shrimps is definitely pleasing to both the eyes and the palate…

Served sizzling was the other crowd pleaser. Pan Fried Foie Gras With Lentil And Pickled Onion (70g/ $14.90). Almost everyone relished over the two servings of rich buttery fatty goose liver. I said almost because someone didn’t enjoy fatty livers as oranges but hey, at least she gave it a try.

Although Saveur’s rendition of the Confit Of Duck was not to my liking, that however should not stop me from introducing Duck Of Confit With Orange Segment And Saute Shittake ($8.90) to my friends. I personally didn’t give the Confit a second try so I shall not infer from my previous encounter.

It is my belief that all good things should be share so when I saw two of my dinner guests decided to share the Crispy Barramundi With Crab Potato And French Bean ($12.90), it was surely an act of good gesture between good friends. I recon it’s a safe dish because my previous dining partner (He’s a angler.) said so…

I too shared the Crispy Pork Belly With 62.5 Degree Egg ($10.90) surrounded by sea of green lentils with everyone. While it didn’t won everyone’s heart, I personally appreciate the slab for the juiciness of the fatty meat as well as the crispness from the seared skin.

Finishing our dinner was a personal favorite of mine. The Burgundy peasant dish, Beef Bourgulgnon ($13.90) was nothing short of juiciness and tenderness, particularly with the unison of red wine. If this is the type of quality they’re whipping then I can’t wait to savor their Wagyu Beef!

A few repetitions, a few more side dishes and that dreaded GST & Service Charge accumulate to a bill of $126.70. I thought it was good deal considering the amount of food brought to our table. I doubt you could find another similar place in town that serves up comforting and affordable French food but if you do, please share with me alright?

We waited for quite some time before our orders came. Not forgetting that we were there on a Friday night, the restaurant was packed to its fullest even when it was nearing their closing hours and most of them were working adults.

Angel Hair Pasta With Tiger Prawn And Lumpfish Caviar - $6.90 (4/5)

I was actually expecting tiger prawns and not DICED tiger prawn. But looking at the price, we would probably sound ingrate and cheapskate to complain. A mistake on my part for not reading the description of the dish on the menu carefully. Nevertheless, the tiger prawn and the caviar is a perfect match! I love how they complement each other so well.

Angel Hair Pasta With Sherry Minced Pork And Sakura Ebi - $3.90 (4/5)

At first glance, the Sakura Ebi (hei bi look alike) looks disturbing, with the eyes looking back at you, but I am glad to inform you that its taste is nowhere near its looks.

From here on, our dinner experience started to go downhill when we realised that the staff had forgotten our orders.

Crispy Pork Belly With 62.5 degree Egg With Diced Vegetable - $10.90 (3/5)

Glenn was thoroughly taken aback when the pork was served. I suspect that he is a Muslim. Or that the portion did not correspond to the price. Oh well, fine dining.

The best part of the pork belly is the crispy skin, but it wasn't very well done. Could be due to the rush to serve it to us, could be that it just wasn't nice. Half the skin was too hard, which made eating it difficult, and the other half was too soft, which got stuck onto my teeth. Other than that, there was something missing in the flavor of the pork belly. The poached egg was my favorite, though I did not like the lentils at all.

I thought the three put together were simply a mismatch.

Our Pistachio Panna Cotta never came and and all that's left were disappointment. No doubt that they were all smiles and ready to receive customers, but they failed to take care of the smallest details.
