Ambience at Shabu Sai is open, spacious, and brightly lit, with ample seating areas, and modern, functional furniture. Suitable even for large groups, the hot pot cooking smell does tend to stick to your clothing, even though the ventilation is adequate enough that it doesn't feel stuffy or uncomfortable. The place is also noisy and feels slightly messy, especially with the crowds during peak periods.

Service at Shabu Sai is passable. Staff engagement is minimal, beyond seating diners, you won't be interacting much with them. The entire buffet is self-service, although I note that staff regularly come around to clear away empty / dirty tables frequently, which is good. They're also prompt in serving meat orders to your table, and will quickly assist with changing gas canisters if needed. However, it's difficult to attract their attention.

Food at Shabu Sai is Japanese shabu-shabu or sukiyaki hot pot buffet style, where you choose 2 soup bases. Pick your vegetables and sides from a selection of around 30 items, then place your meat orders with staff. Everything is free-flow here. You can even change soup bases throughout your meal with some creativity! Prices are designed to attract the masses, budget about SGD $32 per person for a meal here. I find taste to be passable at best.

As a Japanese concept buffet dining, the soup bases naturally are Japanese inspired, with several other Southeast Asian flavours of soup bases as well. The variety of soup bases is the main highlight of dining here, as everything else is just passable. My personal favourites would be the Soup Base Sukiyaki and Soup Base Yuzu Collagen, in that order.

The only catch was that upon entry, they informed that there was a time limit of one-and-a-half hours, meaning, you were supposed to wolf down your hotpot buffet dinner within an hour and a half.

We grabbed an assortment of mushrooms, vegetables, eggs, seafood and sushi back for cooking and consumption. The set itself consisted of three different types of meat - pork, chicken and beef. For each table, we could choose 2 soup base, and we chose Spicy for one, and Tonkotsu (pork bone) for the other.  The soup was good and the vegetables were fresh. The meat was tender; I was already full but just had to eat more of the really succulent strips of beef.

Finally, time for some palate-cooling dessert. The soft-served ice-cream came in vanilla flavour only, and there was hot fudge sauce, rainbow chips, raisins etc to add on. It was not bad - not too sweet, but lovely enough to make for a nice, simple dessert.

A number of soup bases, it also offered flavourful and freshest ingredients to simmer in. Decided on Signature Sukiya soup and Seaweed soup, we opted for free-flow drinks and paid additional $1.99. Impression on food presentation was positive, they were all quite artfully displayed with wooden Japanese labels. Talking about the soup, safest choice of Sukiya was decently savoury. Luxurious smooth combined with homely taste, pot was delectable. Seaweed version was not bad too, richer with successive stuffs putting inside. It might be the cheapest Japanese style buffet in town, only $24.99++. We leaved with a very satisfied mood, tummy was full to the max.

I have to say that the soups are really good - they're rich and flavorful.

The meats were sliced very thinly to aid in the ease of cooking. They're fresh and have a good fat to muscle ratio so it's not too tough to chew yet still won't leave you with a mouthful of fat.

Overall, the bunny felt that the Shabu Sai buffet is pretty much worth it's price. The soups were tasty and the meats were fresh.

Trays of Sliced Beef, Pork and Chicken with unlimited servings! These trays of meat are delivered to the table only upon requests to maintain high hygiene standards and freshness. As you can see, the meats were so thinly-sliced that they were translucent – perfect for shabu-shabu. I especially enjoyed the pork and beef which were very tender and not even tough when left forgotten in the pot. Meat lovers will definitely enjoy them!

From the six regular soup base including curry dashi, tomato, seaweed, tonkotsu, we picked the Spicy and also the Special flavour for May/June-Yuzu Salt which claimed to contain collagen.

While waiting for the soup to boil, one can start selecting from the buffet counter of fresh vegetables, including Japanese shoots and white radish. Other unique items include the orange fish balls and the vegetable balls.
The meat are served in bamboos, not purely for presentation, but because it has anti-bacterial properties to keep the meat fresh. One was the normal fish paste, while the other was the minced beef with lotus.

One thing that differs from the first outlet at Causeway Point is the addition of assorted sushi. The rice lacked the acidity of vinegar and was rather dry. I prefer the mini donburi with bits of unagi and egg but the sauce was too little.
The largest disappointment of the day, unfortunately, was the Soup base. Both the Spicy and Yuzu salt we had chosen were extremely salty, and tasted no different from each other. The Spicy version lacked the spice while the latter had no yuzu fragrant or flavour.

The tasting samplers of other soup bases had the same problem: too much MSG, except for the seaweed soup which was very bland. The seasonings were excessive to the extent that the salty juices infiltrated all the vegetables and meat which was "shabu-shabu". As a result of the soups, the wide variety of sauces, from the standard Japanese ponzu dressing to korean chilli bean paste became wasted or rather redundant.

Unless you bring your own water, free flow of drinks and ice cream are available when you topped up $1.99. The food kept me very thirsty until the next morning. To put it short, the soup bases still has plenty of room for adjustment. Otherwise it would be good if there are kettles of hot water on the buffet table for standby to prevent a salt attack.

From afar, this Jap place is very attractive. It has a very bright and lively interior which, I think, draws people to try out this new restaurant at Orchard Central. I was there at around 630pm and people were already waiting outside to get a table. Thankfully, I already had a reserved seat there.Anyway, since this is a shabu shabu place you choose the soup base where you can to cook the fresh ingredients you can just get from the counter. Anyway, since this is a shabu shabu place you choose the soup base where you can to cook the fresh ingredients you can just get from the counter. There's also varied fresh meats which you can ask for. My first soup base was the shoyu and it was quite salty.

I tried the other soup bases, curry and spicy... and they were also also salty. I must have drunk 8 glasses of water just for my body to recover from the extreme salt intake. Too bad because the ingredients were really fresh and the meats had this sweetness to them...

Never mind the queue in front of the restaurant. This place is for you only if you live and breathe salt.
