We went to Robertson Quay for Dinner last Thursday but could not decide which restaurant to go. Finally, we decided to have Shunjuu as we are craving for Japanese food. We did not realise that Shunjuu do not really serve any main course such as sushi, bento, or noodles. They serve mostly BBQ dishes suitable to go with Sake. But we still go ahead with it and the quality of the food is really good but the serving is kinda small and prices are kinda steep. We spend about SGd 30 per pax.

Chiobu and I meandered slowly along Robertson Quay and settled on this Japanese restaurant, Shunjuu Izakaya. “Izakaya” means “place of comfort,” and of course, comfort means alcohol. Too bad we are almost teetotalers. Is the decor comforting? Well, it is fuss-free. Seats are placed along the corridor of Riverside View building, but still far away from the canal, so there isn’t a view to speak of. Not much of an ambience.

The restaurant is also known for its “sumiyaki,” or skewered BBQ meat over Japanese charcoal.

The complimentary starters were quite appetizing. The raddish and carrots, as appetizers, were soaked in a miso-soup until the roots were throughly soft, absorbing the essence of the soup. Another free entree was a very hard white cabbage. (Chiobu said, “Can eat this raw meh???”) First, you squeeze sour lemon over the very salty, slightly sweet bean sauce. Then you dip the almost tasteless white cabbage in the sauce. Crunchy like celery but much tastier.

Mixed Sashimi for $40. While they were relatively fresh, we didn’t think it was value-for-money. $40 should buy you a meal, not a few pieces of sashimi.

We also had Set A ($19) and Set B ($25) of sumiyaki. Set A consists of beef short rib, asparagus rolled with pork, chicken meat ball, golden mushroom rolled with beef, and pork belly. Set B has rib eye, scallop rolled with pork, rice cake rolled with pork, chicken wing and goose liver (foie gras).

It is difficult to pick the better set because they all have positive and negative food in them. The bad ones you should avoid: from set A, pork belly (too hard), beef short rib (overcooked) and from set B, scallop rolled in pork (tasteless), rice cake with pork (too sticky and bland and starchy). The fantastic ones are: from Set B, rib eye (very tender), chicken wing (flavorful!), and goose liver (melts in your mouth!).

Service was good and attention.

Overall, everything–the food, the service and the ambience–was satisfactory but not overly memorable. We won’t come out of the way to eat this but if we are in the area, then we wouldn’t mind. Including $2 green tea per person, and GST, etc, we paid $104 for two persons.

The selection is huge, and when faced with so many choices I tend to overestimate my appetite and always end up ordering too much
grilled swordfish skewers-This was my favourite. The fish was really fresh, with a wonderful texture and an almost buttery flavour.
pork belly stuffed with kimchi-I’ve recently acquired a taste for kimchi , and I think it goes perfectly with pork.
chicken hearts-Some of the best grilled chicken hearts I’ve ever had. They sliced these really thinly and grilled perfectly so they’re nice and tender
After a heaty meal like that, we needed some kind of dessert to cleanse our palate. They only had 2 choices – a green tea ice cream and a yuzu sorbet.
Yuzu sorbet-The flavour was delicate and a perfect balance of sweet orange and bitterness.
Service was excellent – they kept topping up our tea without being asked, and were very polite and efficient in taking our orders

My first time visit here. Since the night was cool, decided to sit outside and enjoy the breeze. The restaurant serves a variety of skewers, and have a good selection of sakes too.

We chose a sweet sake to start off with. The appetizer was "lettuce" with a sauce for you to dip in. The veggie was quite sweet and the sauce was delicious. (almost finished the whole plate of sauce)

We ordered a set of 5 skewers, including goose liver, beef, chicken wing, pork wrapped in rice cake and pork wrapped in scallops. We ordered also eggplant, and the lamb rack which was recommended by the waitress. The tofu with thousand year old egg is also a must try, I personally don't really like the egg, but the sauce was very nice and the tofu was really soft.

We also ordered a rice in soup with salmon at the end, the soup base was really fragrant. We ended the dinner with ice-cream. Their Shunjuu flavour (think they used their rest name as the ice-cream flavour) is actually orangy taste and is quite good. My favourite green tea flavour cannot go wrong either.

All in all, the food was great and the service was good too. Will visit again~~~
