I've been to this restaurant only once before a long time ago and did not return due to its high prices although from what I recall, the food was not bad. I proceeded to order a bowl of Nyonya laksa ($4.80). The presentation was done well. The gravy was pretty good, quite spicy and thick. Being Nyonya laksa, I tasted a tinge of sour in their laksa gravy. Not bad, although personally I prefer the local version of laksa with lots of dried shrimp. The nyonya version here does not have dried shrimp, though it had fresh prawns.

A friend ordered their nasi lemak ($4.80) and added an additional chicken wing ($1.80). Once again, presentation was good and I had a taste of their homemade achar - good. I did not try the rice & chicken wing, though comments from my friend were favorable. The chicken wing was fried till very crispy, I could hear the crackling sound from across the table as my friend bit into her chicken wing.

Another friend had the ayam goreng lunch set. It's today's daily lunch special with a free glass of chilled chinese tea thrown in. All at a discounted price ($7.50, otherwise usually $8.80 from the ala carte menu and with no drink). The caramelized onions were really tasty & fragrant. The chicken leg was also fried till a very nice crisp. Quite a good dish as well.

- Ayam goreng lunch set

With this revamp, they have removed service & gst charge. So, they definitely have brought down their prices. Perhaps with this move, they will be able to lure more of the lunch crowd. Worth a try if you like peranakan food without burning a big hole in your pocket

I went back to this restaurant for the second time, and this time round I ordered their famous signature dish - ayam goreng. The deep-fried chicken has a very crispy texture outside, good flavour where you can taste how well-marinated the chicken is. The meat is tender and juicy, I guess it's mainly due to the fact that it's the chicken thigh part. I like how the deep-fried chicken is finished up with thick soy sauce, and those caramelized onion is just superb.

This restaurant is located in the enclosed Biopolis (next to Matrix building). I didn't know about this place until I came across the Women Weekly promotion (1-for-1 customized set dinner $68 - ended on 30/11/11). The starters consist of kueh pie tee, ngoh hiong, and otah. Kueh pie tee is very tasty, with a very thin and crispy 'pocket'! The minced meat and ingredients inside the ngoh hiong are very well-seasoned, most importantly the dish would not leave you with the fatty oily feeling despite it's deep-fried. I find the otah a bit too spicy though, but very authentic as you can taste the fish chunks and skin too.

The mains (prawn; fried fish fillet; chicken) were served with white rice (with spicy lady fingers as side dish). The mains are pretty ordinary, but I really like the gravy sauce of the prawn dish.

The desserts were served with a choice of tea or coffee. Fried banana is a bit oily though, but the yam ice-cream is so refreshing! And the sweet soup (black glutinous rice with coconut milk) is tasty too, homely taste, just like mum's cooking!

Not sure Celebrating a good friend's birthday and decided to go to Spice Peranakan as she loves Peranakan cuisine and we have a meeting near Biopolis.

We were a party of 6 and we had:

1) Lemongrass Drink - good and strong but not overpowering.

2) Tofu Tempra - nicely deep fried to achieve the crusty coat with soft insides.

3) Ngo Hiang - good with nice, thin crusty skin and tasty fillings

4) Chap Chye - I don't like Chap Chye to start with so this dish didn't impress me

5) Bakwan Kepeting - the Bakwan was BIG! So only one ball per person but it's got crabmeat that is mixed with minced pork. The result is very tasty meatball that leaves you covering your neighbour's meatball!!

6) Ayam Buah Keluak - this one was only ok. Not like the ones I enjoyed in Melaka at all!!

7) Otak Otak - this one can tell it's homemade. Nice but I would prefer it spicier.

8) Ikan Assam Pedas - at $18.90 a bowl, I expected a bigger fish and the tasty I felt was not intense enough.

9) Chendol - my colleagues all enjoyed the thick sweet concoction.

10) Bubur Cha Cha - I alone found the dessert very well-done. Not too sweet and bowl was full of ingredients.

Although the food was decent enough, I would say the company was far more enjoyable than the meal.

Spice Peranakan used to be a small cozy eatery in Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, where they served great and tasty authentic Peranakan food, albeit at a premium compared to other eateries in that building. However feeling the need to expand, they decided to move over to the Biopolis at Buona Vista, where their floor space has tripled and they even have outdoors seating. Their food is generally nice to eat, signature dish being the ayam goreng which is a cripsy fried chicken with tender juicy meat

Their food is generally nice to eat, signature dish being the ayam goreng which is a cripsy fried chicken with tender juicy meat inside and topped off with rich caramelised onions. Other dishes that I enjoyed were their bakwan kepeting and assam pork.
