Chunky Chicken Chowder - This was part of the set lunch that the wife had and it came across as creamy but a wee bit too salty. However the chicken chunks were plentiful which was rather unexpected.

Chipotle Chicken Sandwich - I had a bite of the chipotle chicken sandwich and it proved to be very decent; a tad creamy with a tinge of spiciness and sandwiched between two crisp bread halves. Served with shoe string fries and salad - all for $15 nett inclusive of a soup and a drink. A pretty decent deal if you ask me.

Suprette Burger - And my sole reason for coming to Suprette, the namesake Suprette Burger ($20 for lunch, $25 for dinner), topped with bacon (+$3) and mushrooms (+$3). The hand chopped patty was done to medium well even though I had requested for medium rare but still came across as flavourful and juicy with bits of fat for texture. Add plentiful mushrooms, crisp bacon strips, a layer of gruyere cheese and two wonderfully buttery and crisp buns for the ultimate enjoyment. Oh and let's not forget the mountain of crisp shoestring fries (free flow if you visit during dinner but a single serving is more than enough for me).

Lunch cost the both of us to the tune of $42.54, which was well worth the money in my humble opinion. A pity there is no option to have the burger as part of the set lunch (even with a top up) but in itself, the set lunch does represent decent value for money. But the draw (to me at least) is still undeniably the burger.

Suprette is actually housed in the heritage Kam Leng Hotel (first established in 1927 and later extensively refurbished and reopened in 2012), along the busy and sometimes chaotic Jalan Besar Road. The simply furnished eatery is quite small and can probably take up to about 30 customers in one sitting. As it is located on the ground floor, all the views you get are of cars and passers-by (relatively rare). But the place is cosy in it's own right, exuding an unhurried, small world charm amidst the hustle of the passing traffic. However, having said that, pray for quiet patrons. During our visit, there was a relatively loud table who held us hostage with their gossips and that marred our experience quite a fair bit.

Pasta Of The Day - Pasta of the day happened to be Carbonara so went for it. In a "tribute" to the local dining scene, the spaghetti is served on a water resistant brown foil (like those you would get at nasi lemak or economic beehoon stalls) placed in a old school tin plate. Or maybe they just wanted to save cost and do away with the fancy tableware. Anyways, the spaghetti was a little overcooked while the cream sauce came across as a tad runny. Throw in generous handful of porky, fat laden bacon bits and you end up with a rather uninspiring rendition of this Italian classic. I reckon I could get something similar at a random western food stall in Singapore, at a fraction of the cost.

Suprette Burger - The sole reason why we were here; Suprette's eponymous burger, with an additional topping of bacon and mushrooms ($3 apiece). Soft buns slathered with butter and toasted on the griddle till crisp and golden brown on the surface, sandwiching a juicy, beefy patty with bits of fat for that extra chewiness and topped with a layer of gruyere cheese which imbued it with a faintly sweet, nutty taste. The additional topping of mushrooms was worth it, adding an earthy perspective to the mix but the bacon did come across as a tad too crisp, dry and lacking in salt. Overall still a good burger and one of the best I've had in a while (last one was at Minetta Tavern (http://www.timelessfacade.com/2014/11/minetta-tavern-new-york-home-to-best.html) in New York).

There is only 1 dessert available daily and we didn't fancy what was on offer that day (lemon meringue pie with vanilla ice cream) so we skipped it.

At $20++ for a basic burger with fries, it is honestly a little on the pricey side but I reckon it's well worth the dough. Service was decent and I'll be happy to return just for the burger (and the nostalgia from the hotel), minus the bacon strips of course.

Check out Suprette's set lunch which is priced at $15 and comes with soup, main and drinks! Awesome deal!
Pumpkin soup as starters, which was Suprette's soup of the day. Creamy and lightly flavoured.
I had the Steak Sandwich. Each mouthful was bursting with flavour from the thinly sliced beef (medium well) accompanied with sweetness from caramalized onions.
Chickpea Burger ($17) for the lady. It is a herb and vegetable flecked burger and Suprette decks it with Tahani dressing. Majority of its flavour seems to be from potato and beetroot.

Rounding up my meal was a cuppa. Lightly bodied with no distinct flavour, nonetheless, it was decent for an afternoon drink.

I took a short walk back to Suprette Restaurant, Bar, Cafe located at the vintage-Chinese preserved back-in-time looking Kam Leng Hotel. Everything about this hotel was so ... old-fashioned and stagnant in time, fashionably dated - from the corridors to the interior.

It is a small restaurant / bar / cafe catering to breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks crowds, prising itself on being "compact" and serving comfort food. The service crew is very amicable and helpful, so we took up their recommendation of The Suprette Burger (SGD$20.00) - beef patty, gruyere cheese and fries.

It was a huge burger, looking even more tantalizing next to the bed of golden crispy fries nestled next to it. Our efforts to ignore the bread were futile, because it was sweet (buttered), toasted crispy and came with lots of aromatic-tasting sesame seeds. The patty itself was great tasting especialy with the melted cheese upon it; and being succulent and juicy added points to it. Not bad, really, a rather pure taste although it doesnt has the charred / smokey flavor I prefer; and I am thankful its sweet flavor is not obliterated by heavy garnishings of garlic, pepper or onions.

I had a Mocha (SGD$5.00) to go along with the meal. No sugar was needed - the thick layer of chocolate sauce at the bottom sweetened the bittersweet, nutty and slightly citrusy coffee and gave it the perfect touch already. I did not even regret that they did not have soy milk today ( my original request), since the original tasted great on its own.

The Poached Eggs with Spinach and Potato Cakes was mediocre, nothing special about it. It was served with slices of toast and bacon streaks.

Again the portion for this Suprette Burger was huge. The patty was fresh and juicy, combined with the melted cheese, making it the perfect burger.

Greeted by a table in the middle of nowhere and a huge sign that says Kam Leng Hotel, we were initially dubious and then found the entrance to be on the left corner, with pretty limited and small spaces available. We would have preferred the 'outdoor' seating of course, after seeing how cramped it was on the inside, but it was occupied by a group gathering.

Settling down, we took a while before registering that there wasn't much on the menu to choose from, given that we weren't exactly looking for a heavy lunch, hence forgoing the Suprette Burger which seemed to be their signature. The brunch selection was pretty limited too, with nothing especially standing out that we both decided to order plain old simple breakfasts.

Besar Breakfast ($21)
Pretty fanciful name for its 'big breakfast', there was the usual eggs (choose from scrambled, poached or fried), bacon, ham, sausage, mushroom, roasted potatoes and homemade baked beans. I've never used to think much of scrambled eggs until I've had my fair share of mediocre ones and sad to say this was another one of those. A tad too watery, it didn't have the rich fragrance of scrambled eggs and was slightly too liquid for my liking. The rest were just normal, though my companion thought that the bacon was too salty and it wasn't the juicy flavourful sausage she was expecting.

Breakfast Set ($12)
A smaller version of the Besar Breakfast for those who'd like a light brunch, this was a portion with 2 eggs (choice of fried/scrambled/poached) and 2 sides. I chose the pork sausage and roasted potatoes to go along, the simplest breakfast can get. The scrambled eggs were the same as the one for Besar Breakfast, a disappointing attempt, while the pork sausage was slightly too savory for my liking. I didn't like how it had too much water on the inside as well, whereby every slice results in an oozing sausage and when the water got into contact with the paper lining they had on their plates, it wasn't quite an appealing sight. I'd nonetheless enjoyed my portion of roasted potatoes and only wished that I had that as my 2 sides instead. Slightly spiced, it was cooked to the right softness, not too mashy yet not too hard on the jaws. But then again, I'm a potato lover, so try it for yourself!

Its items were all served on a piece of white paper lining the old school kinda yellow metal plates. I loved the rustic feel, just not sure if that is the best form for the items we had as the fluids/oil from the sausage and eggs soon surfaced and started soaking up the piece of paper, a reminder of the unhealthy oils going into your stomach. Not exactly the most appetising sight!

Just another one of those brunch hipster cafes, this didn't manage to impress us. Perhaps it was just the items we've ordered that didn't quite match up to what we were looking for, but with the pretty cramped interior, we didn't feel that the ambience was a nice hangout spot for chillin', hence quite unlikely to return again!

The dinner menu is quite limited. I ended up having the Pasta of the Day, tomato-based pasta with onions, garlic, bacon and... I don't know what else. To be honest, I didn't taste bacon at all and all I could taste was garlic and tomato.

Believe it or not, this simple dish costed $16. Really overpriced! But the portion was insane. Barely finished 1/2 I think. Plus they used angelhair pasta.

It's safe to say that I'm not coming back here.

Service was good, the waiter apologised for the faulty order machine (as a result our orders were delayed in being sent to the kitchen), and he also asked us about our meal after we'd finished -very friendly!

We ordered a Baby Spinach salad with Poached Egg & Brioche ($12), a Chicken Pot Pie ($14 -do allow approx 15min for preparation) and a Suprette Burger ($19).

The salad dressing with bacon was immaculate -hint of balsamic vinegar, olive oil...and is that a touch of caramelised onion i taste? Deliciously refreshing, went well with the poached egg that wasn't too runny -just the way I liked it. The whole dish was very palatable and the taste was definitely there. Slightly disappointed there was only one slice of toast though, but I could overlook that given the quality of everything else.

The Chicken Pot Pie was interesting, it came served in a medium-depth dish (It's the traditional kind of plates that you can find at grandma's house
). The pastry was flaky, the chicken was tender, the filling also included potatoes, celery and carrots. The filling had a creamy sauce, that you just might get sick of if you'd finish the entire pot pie even that it was really substantial -sharing this would be perfect. I like how the potatoes still had the skin on. Gave the filling texture!

The Suprette burger had a huge, thick, fat beef patty that was cooked well -wasn't overcooked, slightly pink and while I don't eat beef, my dad commented that it was very tasty and juicy, and the whole burger had a lot of "bite". The portion of fries were also super super generous! Three of us shared the fries with ketchup, they were freshly fried and nicely salted. Definitely a good choice for burger and fries fans.

All in all, I definitely would say this diner has a great, quaint ambience be it for coffee or brunch. The food is at reasonable prices and the taste is really super too! Definitely will wanna bring friends here next time.
