I have been reading Tanuki Raw somewhere and it kinds of remind me of Donburi with onsen egg. (Their marketing advertisement has been good to give me such good impression). We was looking at Minions Cafe in Orchard Central and it wasn't appealing to us and by chance we decided to dine in Tanuki Raw instead.

Tanuki Raw is modernly furnished in an industrial interior tempered by eye-catching furniture.
and has 80 seats spread across an outdoor balcony overlooking Orchard Road.

It was fun sitting at the bar side observing how the tenders mix and prepare variety of drinks. As for our glasses of Water Melon Yuzu. Fresh watermelon juice were already prepared before hand and kept in the fridge. They just have to mix portion of it with yuzu and served them on the "rocks".

Water Melon Yuzu - $10

While Tanuki Raw is having a house promotion for happy hour daily from 5-8pm, we get to order Oysters at $2 each, limited to 6 pcs per glass of drink. The fresh raw oysters they served were brought in from Canada, France and Japan.

Besides having that, we ordered a plate of 5 slices salmon that falls under the happy hour promotion too. It was great having Sashimi again with Wasabi and Soy Sauce!

For bites, seeing Sweet Potato Fries excites me. These thick-cut sweet potato fries were deep fried with Tanuki Raw's spice mix, truffle oil and served with truffle aioli in an aluminium tin.

Truffle Sweet Potato Fries - $10.90

One of the recommended rolls on the Menu is none other than the Golden Kani Maki with deep fried house seasoned soft shell crab, fresh snow crab, cucumber and crispy mozzarella all in a roll. Divided into portion of 4, these delicious rolls were topped with toasted seaweed and drizzled with generous amount of golden salted duck egg hollandaise sauce.

Golden Kani Maki - $18.90

Well, we just did not have enough of salmon and here comes the seared salmon roll topped with Mentaiko sauce over some crispy mozzarella cheese, seasoned flakes and Tanuki's Oko Sauce! Yums!

Superstar Roll - $12.90

It was my first time there and would not be my last. Simply love the environment. Best of all, if you are having gathering with friends who are vegetarians, there are food for them too. Hope to be back soon.

As the restaurant was crowded, I decided to ask for outdoor dine in area, which was still has quite a number of tables as most felt that it was quite hot to dine outdoor. Compared to indoor, I felt outdoor was better as indoor was filled with cooking smell. Sitting in outdoor, one also can enjoy the great view of the busy Orchard Road.

While looking through the menu, I was served iced water. A bit disappointed as the water was not refilled. Maybe sitting outdoor was not so good after all, as it was difficult to get the attention of the staffs.

Although it was weekend, the restaurant offered lunch menu. Just add $2++ to the main dish to make it a lunch set.

I decided to have a Premium Set by topping $5++. The set included miso soup, green salad, and coffee or "Back to work" beverage.

Foie Gras Truffle Yakiniku ($19.90++)

The foie gras was quite buttery and melt in the mouth. The beef was quite tender and moist. The mixed rice was tasty on its own.

Miso Soup
The soup was filled with chunky pieces of tofu and seaweed. The soup tasted light and flavourful.

Green Salad
The salad was lightly tossed with ginger soyu dressing. Light and crunchy.

Shio Smooth (a la carte $5++)
fresh shiso, matcha green tea, lemon, blended with ice
It was my choice of "Back to work" beverage. It was light and refreshing in taste. Just the right to have during such a hot day.

Overall the food was not bad. But the service needed to be improved as it was quite difficult to get the attraction of the staffs.

Located on the 2nd floor of Orchard Central, Tanuki offers rather closely packed tables amidst an industrial setting. Think cement screed floor, exposed ceiling and halogen lights; not my kind of style. Thankfully there wasn't a crowd when we dropped by.

Bara Chirashi Don - Cubes of reasonably fresh scallop, sea bream, tuna, swordfish, salmon, striped jack salmon roe and tamago served on rice with Tanuki's signature sauce; lacking in bite as the cubes were cut too small while the signature sauce came across as mildly salty with a hint of ginger. Overall a decent bowl of chirashi don but in comparison to that of Hana Hana's, a more expensive (~ $3 more) but less tasty version. In short, if you want value for money chirashi dons, stick with Hana Hana.

Truffle Yakiniku Don - Apparently Tanuki's pièce de résistance and the highly raved about dish (on social media at least), the truffle yakiniku don looked promising at the onset. Black angus short rib slices pan seared till medium that came across as tender with a slight hint of beefiness and topped with a creamy onsen egg. However the truffle soya sauce was way too salty for my liking (had to drink lots of water!) and I only tasted weak, random flashes of truffle oil (no fragrance to speak of). The presence of a rather distinct taste of ginger didn't quite do it for me as well (not a fan of ginger to be honest). All in all, still a decent but rather small serving of yakiniku don.

There is an option to top up $2++ for a set lunch which includes a bowl of salad, miso soup and hot tea. The both of us went with this and chalked up a total bill of ~ $40; not too expensive but less than satisfied (ironic that Lady M a few shops down provided that satisfaction instead). Service was okay but I doubt I'll be returning anytime soon.

Situated at Orchard Central. The shop is really not hard to find. They often set lunches which is very convienent for excutives like us. They used brown rice instead of white so is more healthy. Thick pieces of salmon makes it more value for money. Comes with a bowl of soup and drink.

(Fried salmon skin with garlic lime chili sauce)

A pretty unique dish! I loved how they added the Singapore flavor to this by adding the garlic lime chili sauce. It was pretty addictive too!

Garlic Fries - $7

(Golden fries tossed with Garlic)

The fries were overcooked and we couldn't taste the Garlic in it. We did though, find a handful of diced garlic at the bottom of the basket. So no, definitely would not order this again.

Lunch sets that comes with Salad, Miso Soup and Green tea at an additional $2

I think they used wasabi vinaigrette dressing for the salad! Wasn't really my kinda thing but if you love wasabi, then why not give it a try! $2 is pretty reasonable for these add-ons!

Salmon Don - $12 (Lunch promo)

(Fresh sliced salmon, lightly seared aburi, plump ikura served with their housemade spicy mayo and yakiniku sauce)

I didn't know that Tanuki Raw was opened by the same owner behind Standing Sushi Bar till the very day I visited it. Well, I have never liked the salmon at SSB because I have always felt that it lacked freshness. Decided to skip this thought and still give Tanuki Raw Bar a try but..... I was disappointed. I've had my fair share of good salmon sashimi in 22 years of my life and this was nowhere near.

Oh anyway, all their Donburis are served with Onigiri rice!

Chirashi Don - $17.80 (Lunch promo)

(A mix of seasonal and staple sashimi including scallop, sea bream, tuna, swordfish, salmon, striped jack and salmon roe, seasoned with our signature sauce served with tamago on sushi rice)

Oh the to-die-for Chirashi Don! To be fair, I didn't try this, but to me, paying $17.80 for this might have been a little pricey, if say the standard of their sashimi was similar to that of the Salmon Don. The ones at Sushi Tei costs only $9.90 with equal portions of Sashimi.

There's also an option for Bara Chirashi Don and the sashimi comes in cubes!

Truffle Yakiniku Don - $14.80 (Lunch promo)

(Break the runny yolk of the onsen tomago egg over the black angus short rib that has been pan seared with a dollop of truffle soy sauce)

Probably their only saving grace! I savored this bowl on my own but the truffle got a little too gelat for me towards the end. Still, $14.80 for this is pretty affordable! I would prolly stick to their cooked Donburis next time if I ever do visit them again! This was served with Onigiri rice as well! Would have preferred the fragrant Japanese rice instead!

The restaurant had a modern take on the traditional Japanese restaurant with bar counters, dimmed lights and an open kitchen. They even have an outdoor seating!

Service:

Service was pretty slow that day, and the fries were the last to be served (And they were overcooked). It was a unconventional when we got our Donburis first before we got our salad and miso soup when they were supposed to be the appetizers.

This time, I found myself craving for some Japanese curry and therefore, Tanuki Curry is the choice of the night. It definitely did not disappoint - I love the richness and wholebodiedness of the curry flavour. If I were to compare to the most relatable Japanese curry in Singapore - CoCoICHIBANYA - it will be about twice the intensity of flavours but not overpowering. The chicken cutlet was an awesome pairing with the Japanese curry with its crispy breaded crumbs layering and tender meat. Extremely satisfying.

After trying the Tanuki Raw's Oyster Mentaiko Set, I'm two minds about which one I liked better! I was quite surprised that the oysters came in this presentation rather than just... you know, oysters. It was da bomb - the oyster was SO juicy and fat! The fried breaded crumbs were actually a very thin layer, the rest of it is the oyster itself. You've got to eat it with the tangy cod roe sauce, it's very lusciously thick. The rest is just yummy history.

Tanuki Raw has happy hour promotions that you cannot miss out. Happy hour promotions include $2 for freshly shucked oysters (limit 6 per drink), $7 for 5 slices of salmon sashimi, $10 martinis, $10 pints of beer, $11 classic cocktails, and the promise of an awesome view of Orchard Road! I arrived a little after eight and missed it - but it's okay. I'd love to be back.

One of my favourite malls in town has got to be Orchard Central. I know - most people regard it as a ghost town, it's often empty of people and overshadowed by its neighbour, Somerset 313. But it definitely houses a lot of hidden finds and quirky restaurants, bars, boutiques and gift shops that deviates from the usual franchise brands. That's why I always find myself wandering around Orchard Central and I still haven't gotten bored of it. This time I tried one of the Japanese-inspired bar bistro, Tanuki Raw, also the sister restaurant of Standing Sushi Bar.

For checking into Tanuki Raw on FourSquare, you can get a free appetizer of Fried Fish Skin. While it wasn't at its maximum crispiness, this semi-crunchy snack still satiated my tastebuds nicely with a dip of chilli sauce.

The Salmon Mentaiko Set ($12) on the menu was the most striking, but choosing my set would only be difficult because there are many selections that are enticing even by the sound of it! A set consists of the don, a salad bowl with lotus root chips, and a miso soup. I enjoyed my salmon mentaiko don tremendously - the Japanese rice and salmon was adequately drizzled with delicious and tangy cod roe sauce. The torched and the slightly burnt flavour on salmon... nobody can resist it, really. The salad bowl was average and I tried bit of the vegetables but I decided that I really don't like green things. The miso soup deserves special mention too - it was not too salty and yet the miso flavour is quite strong too. First time that I could finish the miso soup!

This is Tanuki Raw's Sunshine Don ($15), not mine, but I kinda wished I ordered this too when I saw it. Can you imagine black pepper smoked duck breast and bacon dripping with cream cheese in a bowl? I tried a bit of it and it tasted very yummy. Definitely a place I'll recommend if you're swinging by Orchard for a get-together either lunch or dinner. There are plenty of drinks here too since it is a bar! Tanuki Raw has a long balcony overlooking Orchard Road, with happy hour daily from 5 - 8pm with martinis at $10! Well, definitely a cool place to chill.

It is located at 181 Orchard Road #02-03 Orchard Central, Singapore 238896 and the number to dial is 6636 5949. Tonight I sat outside- on the lovely terrace where I get the view of Orchard Road itself, at my very feet.This is a Japanese concept bar with very relaxing ambience. Tonight I sat outside- on the lovely terrace where I get the view of Orchard Road itself, at my very feet.
This is a Japanese concept bar with very relaxing ambience. The setting is very fetching, especially appealing to the after-work crowd to unwind at while enjoying some good food and drinks. The live band is not really fabulous though.
We started with our Happy Hour entitlement of SGD$2.00 each oyster with every glass of alcoholic drink ordered. *Germaine and I each had a dozen of it, but still, we didnt feel aprodiasic. Thee oysters were fresh though, and we had fun squeezing lemon wedges, Tabasco sauce or the special spicy sauce served with the oysters, into the raw oysters for great taste!
We also had the Salmon Sashimi for Happy Hour promotion - only thing here was that the price of their salmon sashimi has risen from SGD$5.00 a plate to SGD$7.00 a plate now. I thought the price hike was a rather drastic jump. Nonetheless we had three servings of these - wouldn't say that the fish is too fresh or bouncy in texture, but it just satiated my all-time craving for salmon sashimi.
We also shared some Tori Karaage (fried chicken, SGD$10.00) - quite crispy on the outside, and the flesh within was tender, a common trait of chicken thigh meat. I thought the bite-sized chicken was good, especially as finger foods or side dishes.

Encased by glass, this restaurant with bare concrete floors and square wooden tables gives an authentic Japanese bar's feeling. It is great for chilling out with friends over drinks and tapas or enjoying a simple but satisfying Japanese meal. The friendly appeared bogged down by workload though, so sometimes it may take a while to get their attention.

Edison*, Katherine* and I were really here for these. The great promotion or rather, Happy Hour is that between 5-8pm everyday, as long as you order an alcoholic drink, you may order the Raw Oysters at SGD$2.00 per oyster, and Sashimi Platter at SGD$5.00 for a platter of 5 pieces.

The Raw Oysters and Salmon Sashimi were rather flesh, and it was rather a feast to start off with these over our Martinis and Beers.

Not enough of shell items after the oysters! So we ordered a round of Oysters with Cheese, Mentaiko (marinated roe of pollock and cod), and Yakitori Chicken (basically, chicken on sticks, grilled) - all were delicious nibbles.

The same people behind the Standing Sushi Bar introduced Tanuki Raw at the Orchard Central. Tanuki Raw's daily Happy Hour is definitely one of the best Happy Hours I've ever been to. From 5pm to 8pm everyday, you could enjoy $10 martini, $2 for freshly shucked raw oysters (limited to 6 oysters per drink), and $5 for 5 slices of salmon sashimi (limited to 1 portion per drink). My friend made the extra effort to come by Tanuki Raw by 6 pm on a Friday to snag a table for us. Once everybody reached by 7pm, we began feasting on raw oysters and salmon sashimi.

The oysters were so fresh! They were extremely delicious with lemon and tobasco. The sweet freshness oozing out of the juicy oysters was just so awesome.

The salmon sashimi slices were thick and juicy. They were also very fresh and sweet. Both the oysters and salmon sashimi went very well with the martini that I ordered.

My friend told us that Tanuki Raw's main courses were pretty average so we left after finishing our drinks, oysters, and salmon sashimi.

Fans of oysters would probably have heard of Tanuki Raw before, with its value-for-money $2 huge oysters during happy hour with orders of their drinks. Spotting a plate of half dozen oysters on every table, we were probably the exception being there, as both of us don't eat raw stuffs.

Rockstar ($10)
Seared salmon draped over mozzarella and covered with mentaiko sauce

This was the highlight of our meal, and I was left captivated by this rock star. This has got to be the most amazing combination here, and I loved the slight burnt taste from the seared top, making it flavorful, pairing perfectly with the mentaiko sauce. The sauce was a nice complement, unlike the usual which would overwhelm the taste of it. In fact, it helped accentuated the seared portions and the otherwise dull mozzarella in the combination. This is the rockstar indeed. At the end of our meal, we regretted almost immediately as we walked out, for not ordering another plate of this!

Tanuki Balls ($12)
Truffled beef carpaccio draped over deep-fried cheese potato balls

Looking like a glorified Tako ball nicely presented, this probably wasn't very justified for its price tag of $4 per piece. Apart from the truffled beef slice lain on top for that tapas pretty presentation, the potato balls itself was just ordinary, pretty much just mashed potato with cheese. I liked how it was loose and not too heavy on the inside, with the cheese surprisingly complementing the beef slices well and not overpowering. The combination was good, yet the simplicity of it didn't seem to garner a $12 worth of dish served.

Shrimptastic ($10)
Ebi fry roll sprinkled with sakura ebi and drizzled with spicy sauce

We thought this was quite your typical kind of ebi tempura, well complemented with the crunchy fried ebi bits sprinkled on top. The spicy sauce was a tad too overwhelming that it masked the taste of the roll itself. I didn't quite fancy the strong and creamy sauce, perhaps having it served on the side for dips would have been better without overwhelming the dish!

Trio of Fries ($8)
spam, lotus root and truffle fries

How can anyone resist fries? We loved this basket with abit of everything to try out more variety! The spam sticks were too thin that it was just like having those Indian sticks snacks with a distinct fried taste to it, making it quite jelat after a few sticks. It lacked the texture of spam I was looking for, and the fried/burnt taste of it didn't quite sit well with me.

Thinly sliced lotus root, it tasted just like chips, though we found it just wayyyy too salty and lacked the fresh crisp crunch to it. This wasn't exactly an impressive one and we still loved our classic truffle fries. Subtly infused with the truffle taste, it was surprisingly good for such thick version. As the truffle taste was subtle and smooth, it got quite addictive without the jelat/overwhelming taste. The truffle still won the battle at the end!

Tanuki Aburi ($11)
Trio of the following:

Mentaiko Scallop

Spicy crab meat torched on a scallop shell

Out of the trio, we found the spicy crab meat the most disappointing of all. Expecting real crabmeat in the dish, it tasted simply like the surimi sticks cut up into cubes then drizzled with spicy sauce to mask partially the fishy taste.

I loved the yuzu sauce accompanying the salmon aburi, though I'm never a fan of raw food so I was just dipping into the sauce! With a sweet base, there was a slight refreshing citrus touch to it, making the cream base taste light and addictive.

The scallop was our favorite of the trio, with slightly torched surface and mentaiko sauce. I guess you can't really go wrong with mentaiko! The fresh scallop cubes with a bounce went perfect with the creamy sauce and got us addicted!

Bacon Shishamo Wrap ($10)
Pregnant smelt fish, streaky bacon, shredded radish and wasabi mayo served burrito-style

This was quite a major disappointment. A combination of ingredients that sounded sinfully good, it failed to bring out the best in both, and drew our attention instead to the heaps of lettuce, vermicelli and thick burrito skin. The proportion of the main highlights were simply too little, and it took us quite a while before being able to taste the shishamo. The wasabi mayo didn't quite go with the bacon and shishamo too, and we thought it tasted better on its own, without the sauce.

ASC ($10)
Rich asparagus with raw norwegian salmon and melted cheese

This didn't seemed like its description and we had to verify with them before digging in. Topped with perhaps their universal sauces used in almost all the dishes, the asparagus was hidden inside, wrapped with salmon and a dap of the cheese on the inside. I found the salmon a little too dry for my liking, while the asparagus was too soft and mushy. It lacked the varying textures and it was all too mushy for my liking.

Little Pig ($10)
Juicy bacon and sake-poached green apple in a reverse roll with pomodoro sauce

This sounded great from the description, and perhaps with high expectations come high disappointments. We couldn't really taste much of the sake apple and the bacon was a tad too tough, with an aftertaste that didn't sit well with me. I loved the different textures you can find in a mouthful with chewy seaweed and the crunchy fried exterior. A pretty decent one if you weren't having such high expectations!

Alice in Wonderland ($18) and Brothers Toffee Apple Cider ($14)

Under their signature cocktails list, Alice sounded like an adventure to take on, on a whimsical night. I loved the smoothness of it, and what seemed like mango to us as the base. Refreshing and light, it was perfect for some light alcohol night. Take note that these two aren't covered in the list of happy hour happy prices though!

A rather small space and cramped sitting area, it isn't exactly the place to go for chilling nor for spending long dinners. The food was decent, though slightly pricey and some not exactly worth the price tag. They do have some lunch specials which we thought were pretty worthwhile, with a don rendition of rockstar at just slightly more than $10. Good to visit if you're working around the area! Oh, they do have a live band performance too, on every Tuesday and Friday nights, though we couldn't see it when we visited, and it sounded like just some background music they'd played. Probably good for those who're planning to head for alfresco dining to enjoy it! They don't take it reservations, probably due to the popular demand of their happy hour oysters, hence be there early to get seats!

After a day of shopping we wanted to chill, so I suggested Tanuki as I remembered that they have happy hour from 5 to 7.30pm. Sashimi costs around $3 for a small plate, which was fresh. We also had the Trio Fries which costs about $8; it consisted of Truffle Fries, Spam Fries & Lotus Crisps. truffle fries were average, but truffle taste distinct. Spam fries are actually luncheon meat sliced thinly and fried - a little too salty. My favourite was the lotus crisps, extremely addictive.

Tanuki is a good place to chill in the late evenings, better to sit outdoors for the ambience. There's an oysters promotion during happy hour from 5pm to 7.30pm, at $2 each, and it's limited to 6 pieces per drink ordered. The oysters were very juicy and fresh. I also ordered the lychee martini at $10 during happy hour - nothing special about it, but I liked it as it wasn't too sweet. Service was also good as they kept refilling water.
