 While waiting for all members of the group to be present on our gathering. We started to chat among ourselves over their appetizers. There were not much choice for appetizers and Straight Cut Fries were Served with Parmesan and tartar sauce.

 The staple dish that almost every table ordered was none other than their Brunch set, Assembly Brunch. The platter was served on a wooden board with scrmbled eggs, wiener sausage, sauteed mushrooms, potato gratin, roasted cherry tomatoes, toast, choice of smoked salmon or bacon.

Located right on the ground floor of Cathay is this hipster looking cafe. One must wonder how much do they make, to afford rent in such a prime location! But nonetheless, the staff greeted me politely as I walked in and showed me to a table.The bicycles on the walls were very strategically placed above each table with rather dim lighting.  As I was waiting for the movie to start, I decided to just grab a cuppa and this matcha latte hits the spot! Perfect mix of green tea and sweetness. The aroma itself woke me up! I am definitely getting another cup of matcha latte here! 

All in all, a great place to chill out without burning a hole in your pocket.

 Anyway, since *Kirk, *Katherine and I were already gathered here, we decided to make the most out of it and ordered our coffees first. So, I took the first sip of my Mocha (SGD$6.00) and widened my eyes in surprise. Okayyyyy... another sip confirmed that their coffee contained nutty notes, and was very aromatic despite the velvety chocolate highlights.

 Next, the Peanut Butter Banana Cake (SGD$10.00) was a burst of flavors from the first connection right to the last crumb. The creamy peanut butter layers atop, and in between the cake layers, was smooth and rich - peanut butter lovers take note. The cake was fluffy and soft, reverberating strongly with banana's aroma- the combination was simply amazing.

 Finally, we conquered an Eggs Zoey (SGD$16.00) from the brunch menu - poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce and smoked salmon on English muffins with greens on the side. The poached eggs were runny and warm, its yolk painting the muffins a luscious flavor when upon contact with the knife. The English muffins were solid with the right degree of hardness, making this dish a hearty meal for us.

It's a great place to chill out with friends with it's laid back ambience like cafes in Aussie. Coffee brews starting from $5.50 feature blends by local roasters such as Nylon beans.Matcha Latte was decent, the powdering taste was quite overbearing that itches the throat. Otherwise, it's pretty pleasant. Carbonara ($18), the cream sauce was rich in flavor, the poached egg brings it to a whole new level with it's yolk. Rosti Omelette ($14.50), For that price, I wish they would be more generous with the portion.

 Heard that it was homemade pizza crust so we decided to go ahead with Pulled Pork Pizza ($18). Thin crust pizzas can never go wrong, pulled pork was well marinated and flavorful. Definitely works well for sharing. The Assembly Ground would be one of my choice for cuppa in town or probably before a movie at the Cathay.

Apart from the usual all-day breakfast, mains, and beverages, Assembly Ground also has an assortment of interesting cakes (think Thai Milk Tea/Earl Grey/Gula Melaka) for sweet tooths. There's no service charge and GST is already included in the prices listed, so you pay the amount as per the menu.

 Truffle Fries ($10)

While awaiting our friend who'd overslept, we ordered the Truffle Fries to satiate ourselves. The smell of the truffle can be whiffed from a table away when it passed us. We didn't regret this. The shoestring-cut fries came piping hot and crisp with a fluffy inside. Served in a steel shovel, it was so good. A friend even commented that this was better than P.S. Cafe's. If you need an appetiser, order this.

 Iced Green Tea Latte ($6.50) and Green Tea Latte ($5.50)

With a difference of a $1, the Iced Green Tea Latte comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Apart from the temperature, both versions are the same. The drink was creamy, with the bitter-sweet Green Tea flavour there, but it would have been better less sweet.

 Rosti Omelette ($15) - Eggs, Bratwurst, Grated Potatoes, Sausage, Sour Cream.

The star of the Rosti Omelette is not the Rosti, but rather split between both. You will be disappointed if you expect Marche's standard of Rosti. This version is a little strange, with a part of the rosti too crispy (resembling crispy noodles in texture even) and lacking in the buttery fragrance rosti potato strips have. The omelette was average. Other brunch mains would be better choices.

 The Assembly Brunch ($19.50) - Scrambled eggs, bacon or salmon, wiener sausage, sauteed mushrooms, potato gratin, grilled cherry tomatoes, toast.

The Assembly Brunch was happily, no letdown. The potato gratin was buttery and smooth with a slightly charred exterior. The 2 slices of toast that accompanied it seems to be the multi-grain variety, Scrambled eggs were done to a balanced consistency that wasn't too wet nor too cooked. You also get to choose between smoked salmon and bacon. This dish is reliably good, and though it may sound big, the portion is just right for one with a normal appetite.

 Earl Grey Cake ($4.50)

The Earl Grey loaf cake slice was crumbly in exterior and evidently perfumed with Earl Grey scent. However, it was too sweet right from the first mouthful. Unless you are an ultimate sugar consumer, skip.

 Thai Milk Tea Slice ($4.50)

Much better was the Thai Milk Tea loaf slice. It had the same consistency (same recipe?) as the Earl Grey cake without being overly sweet. We also enjoyed the crumbly Thai milk tea flavoured "crust" on the surface of the cake. The cake itself is more of the dense texture than fluffy.

 Going by cafe standards, the food definitely didn't pale in taste. I guess it shows since one of the chefs was from Wild Honey. The service here was friendly, and the staff didn't hurry us after we'd finished our food. Ok perhaps that's because it was not crowded on the Saturday noon we were there too, Great atmosphere, spacious and decent bites and drinks - all assembled here. This place definitely makes my list of cafes to return to.

Decided to pay a visit to The Assembly Ground on one of the weekday brunch hours. Conveniently located in The Cathay. Modern design with a punch of attitude. Red bricks wall with wooden counter top at the cashier and bar area, mixture of greyish wall with a motorbike and tessellation of shapes for the wall interiors. Place is filled with either wooden table and metal chairs or wooden crate like table paired with comfy arm chairs for a lazy cozy corner.Decent variety of choice for brunch or lunch

Decent variety of choice for brunch or lunch but extensive drinks menu! Price may be a lil more expensive compared to some of other cafes that have nett prices.
I’ve ordered Eggs Zoey ($17) and Iced Green Tea Latte ($6.50)
Eggs Zoey: Poached eggs drizzled with hollandaise sauce on bread muffins layered and topped with smoked salmon. Sauce is a lil sour, creamy and refreshing paired it with the runny egg yolk! Decent portion of salmon and the taste is not too heavy, not too salty. But overall its just average for the price $17.
Iced Green Tea Latte: Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some matcha powder! Cooling and refreshing drink. It tasted powdery. I guess its due to the matcha powder used to mix with water. Flavour of matcha is quite strong, i cant really taste the caffeine though.
Overall a satisfying meal with friendly staffs though they can be more attentive to the customers' need.

We reach the cafe around 4pm. The place is packed but we still manage to find a table easily. Similary to most cafes these days, it is decorated in a wooden, black and white tone. What is different here is the 2 bicycles hanging on the wall with pictures below them. Another interesting decoration is the row of tungsten light bulbs hanging by the wall, which gives a retro look.Another thing is the row of potted herbs on the shelf high up behind the counter.  We are showed to a table in front of the counter, where we have a great view of the cakes available. Interestingly the table number is written on the side of a paper cup (Remember the number when placing order at the counter). Raw sugar is available in a cute little jar on the table.

 The menu is consisted of 2 pieces of papers with barely there typed wordings on a wooden board. Sorry old already, so have some problems figuring out the wordings. As it is late afternoon, the kitchen is closed. So only drinks, starters and the food items on the counter are available. After deciding the order, just make payment at the counter. Cash, NETs and credit cards are accepted here. There is no GST or service charge.

Served in a ball shaped glass with a scoop of ice cream on top. It looks great and tastes quite thick but more like iced chocolate. Seems to be lacking of the coffee taste. The ice cream is a bit of disappointment as there is ice chips around it. Seems that ice cream could have scooped into balls in advance which cause the growth of ice chips around the ice cream.

Foam keeps flowing out when the drink is served. This could be due to the fact that the staff has dropped in the scoop of ice cream too fast and created the chain reaction. The staff could have make sure the foaming has stopped before serving it to us.

We are surprised to find a coco powder shape on the plate. The cake is quite moist and not sweet. Nicely tasted of the tea flavour, especially at the bottom part.

Served piping hot in a army style metal box, it is crunchy and juicy inside with a hint of curry powder (which we wish it could be stronger).  

Iced water is served here but there is no staff around to refill it, which my partner ends up helping himself to the jar of water at the counter. Surprisingly the clearing of used cultery is quite efficient. The staffs have gone round asking even when one has not finished. Overall food is still not bad. Improvements need for cold drinks.

Being a cafe, it is somewhat obligatory to serve all-day brunch, but other menu items include pizza, pasta and sandwiches.  We were somewhat on an adventurous mood that day, so we went for the Rosti Omelette ($14.00+) which also came with Bratwurst and sour cream. This was somewhat a fusion of an Omelette and Rosti, where the grated potatoes find themselves a home beneath a fried egg. While we could feel the texture of the potatoes, the light spices from its seasoning was the only flavours that went through the omelette. The omelette tasted rather Chinese; something one would probably expect from a tzechar stall instead. While it was not really terrible, it did not really hit the spot for me either.

 We were expecting better with the Moroccan Baked Eggs ($15.00+), but we found the eggs cooked too thoroughly as the whites were completely stiffened. The Shasuka was of a below-average spiciness, which is good for those who cannot handle spicy food well. Lamb sausages came underneath the eggs, but a wee bit gamey. Toast were seemingly uninspiring; probably the use of artisan breads would help improve the dish.

 The desserts menu was unavailable during our visit, but there were a couple of bakes and cakes available. We went for a Cinnamon Pecan Swirl Bundt ($7.50+); a combination of Cinnamon Swirl and Bundt Cake. Cream cheese frosting was drizzled atop, and anything cream cheese would never taste wrong. The toasted pecans had a tinge of nuttiness, and the insides were filled with crispy bits of cinnamon that was sweet and complimented well with the cake.

 The Assembly Ground serves two blends for their coffee; one from Nylon Coffee Roasters and one from Common Man Coffee Roasters. There is also flexibility to choose between a single Espresso shot or a double shot. We went for the Common Man Coffee Roaster Blend for our Double-Shot Flat White ($5.50+) and it was a full-bodied and highly acidic cuppa which was great for a morning perk-me-up.

 Their Eggs Benji ($16) was served with double poached eggs and ham doused with hollandaise sauce - all resting atop not-too-toasted buttery brioche. For the non-picky eaters, it would be wonderful as the poached eggs had yolks that were slightly runny and well, the rest can't get too wrong. Nonetheless, I found that it wasn't value-for-money at a whopping $16 - you could easily get the same satisfaction at half this price elsewhere (Hint: W39).

 Their pulled pork pizza ($18) was interesting; pulled pork was usually seen in burgers. I liked how it made a complement with these pizzas that were baked to crispy crunchiness even though it is a little dry. I also tried their bacon croquettas ($10), give crumbly floury potato balls that was deep fried to satisfying crunchiness. For the food, I found them ridiculously priced very high. Sure, there was rent to think of, but if you want to think about the demographics of the crowd hangs around here (ie. teenagers, young adults) - I doubt they can afford to keep coming in here and pay such a price as a pre- or post- movie spot to chill out.

 You are better off trying out the drinks. This is my green tea latte ($5.50) which was brewed to delicious exquisiteness, a balance of strong matcha and distinct caffeine taste.
