Home of the Singapore Sling, this two-storey bar located on the second floor of Raffles Singapore is the place where travellers undergo one of the true rites of passage of travel. While there, sip on the world famous pink cocktail created in 1915 by bar captain Ngiam Tong Boon, and toss peanut shells onto the floor, the only place in Singapore where “littering” is permitted. The menu also offers a melange of cocktails and non-alcoholic concoctions, together with traditional pub favourites.

It's no secret that The Long Bar at Raffles Hotel is meant for tourists. I mean, the Singapore Sling is not such a great drink that you'd regularly pay $25 for it. Even a coke at the Long Bar costs more than $10. That said, it's the kind of iconic place you need to have a drink at at least once in your life. So, with that in mind, my boyfriend and I headed into the Long Bar for a drink on a Saturday afternoon. While I was expecting it to be over-priced, I wasn't expecting such lousy service. We found our way to the bar on the 2nd floor and there was no one at the door to greet us. We stood there for a bit looking around, waiting for someone to tell us whether we should seat ourselves or if they'd show us to a table (it was about half-full), then just chose a table ourselves. To get a menu we actually had to wave down a server and ask for one - I ordered a Singapore Sling, and my boyfriend ordered a vodka tonic. The drinks took a while to come as they seemed to be preparing the Singapore Slings in big batches. A table of 4 people who arrived after us and all ordered Singapore Slings received theirs the same time as I did. While it was an overpriced drink, I have to admit I actually liked the Singapore Sling - sweet and fruity with a big wedge of pineapple on the rim, which was really refreshing on a hot afternoon. My boyfriend's drink was nicely presented with the alcohol and tonic separated, but when he mixed it and had a sip he realized he'd been given gin and not vodka. Again, we had to wave down a server to say that he had received the wrong drink. They replaced it, but no polite "Sorry about the mix-up" or anything like that.It's a nice place to take visitors, but I wouldn't go back on my own. But I really think they need to improve their service if they want their foreign guests to be happy. Obviously there's a 10% service charge, but based on the service received I would not have tipped. 10% is actually considered a small tip in the USA/Canada, so if they provided better service and were friendlier, many staff would be getting more than that from the tourists drinking here
