Ham & Mozzarella Foccacia
($9.50)
Although the staff has heated up the bread, I could not feel any warm in it. The bread is huge in serving. The cheesy foccacia with thin slices of salty ham, topped with rockets and juicy tomatoes. A well balanced combination. However the dish is letdown by the rather blunt knife which I have problem slicing through the bread. In the end, I decide to ask the staff to pack the bread for takeaway.

Canele
A canelé is a small French pastry with a soft and tender custard center and a dark, thick caramelized crust. It tastes like a caramel brulée inside. Sweet and creamy.

Great Detox ($7)
It is made of orange, carrot and ginger. It is served in a glass jar. It tastes of orange with a ginger aftertaste.

Overall the food is not bad. Service is not bad too. Great place to enjoy a relaxing dinner by the fountain.

Tiong Bahru Bakery, as the name implies, began its flagship branch at Tiong Bahru, Eng Hoon Street. Actually it is really easy to spot, this outlet. The simply furnished bakery cafe with its clean-cut pale tones and brick walls is situated around the fountain at the basement of Raffles City Shopping Centre, and occupies a long expanse of space. I was expecting this casual, relaxing cafe to be crowded since I was there around lunch time, and have heard that it is extremely popular. Surprisingly, there were plenty of seats.
It was my first visit there, and I was awed at the display of pastries, wondering what to have. Everything looked delectable - look at the gigantic buns and croissants! All of them look so fresh and inviting, it was a dilemma making up my mind.
Eventually, I settled for the much-raved about Squid Ink Bun, the black beauty amongst a sea of whites. The bun was sweet, fluffy, flakey and fresh. Clapsed between the buns are vegetables - crispy and sweet in its refreshingness; the thin slice of parma ham added a delicious salty overture in tune with the smoked salmon flanked across the expanse of the vegetables within. The entire combination was just mouthful after mouthful of delicacy.
I washed down the delightful bun with a cup of Cappuccino - a little disappointed that this is rather bland and lacks the aroma of good coffee. No doubt, it was still a steaming cup of beauty that made for a satisfactory accompaniment to my food. I was hoping to be able to wolf down a dessert item but I could not, sadly.

Tjis is a good place to have light breakfast or afternoon tea. I went in the afternoon to have tea. It sells pastry, sandwich, burgers and various types of tea and coffee. I ordered the pastry which is one of the famous one think it is called cinamon roll. It is very sweet and crispy. Very tasty , thumbs up. However the hot chocolate is not hot at all is is slightly less than Luke warm although it has very nice coffee art on it. I find that it is too pricey , cost $6+ total spent $10 next round

The rest are normal fare.

Well mentioned, the pumpkin soup came with two big prawn was quite good but portion was too small despite of the price.

Nevertheless, the branch in raffles city basement marketplace is a convenient location for those who need a tea break or short meet up.

Their croissants are very flaky and not of the soft variety. The buttery taste is not very strong either. The chocolate croissant actually tastes like the original flavour croissant and only differentiates itself by its appearance and the thin layer of chocolate at the middle of the pastry. The chocolate is really strong and a little bitter. It did not taste like it is made with cheap chocolate.

Not too bad and I may return to try their other pastries and of course their coffee.

Haha there are none other than the Chocolate croissant and Almond croissant ^^ The Chocolate one is super flaky and crispy with the just-right amount of chocolate sweetness while the Almond one is moist and with its Almond filling in it. I am always on the lookout for good Almond croissants and so far I would think this is the best I have tried so far. Tried the one from Monsieur Kaysier once but it was a let-down and the whole croissant was very oily to my dismay

Coffee here is good. Yeah good I say and period haha.. I personally like the Iced Mocha very much
.. The chocolate added in is not the chocolate powder you get from places like CoffeeBean or Starbucks; TBB uses liquid chocolate which I think makes the drink pleasantly chocolaty

Although the whole pesto bun was like charcoal black, I couldn't taste the squid ink. The pieces of smoked salmon were slightly salty by itself but when eaten together with the rocket leaves and bun, it was just nice. Being a salmon lover, I love this! However, it was still below my expectations.

The croissants however were so good! They certainly lived up to the hype about them. I love both croissants but if you ask me to choose one over the other, I will take the Chocolate Almond! I feel the plain Almond one will suit those people with a preference for less sweeter stuff. I will want to come back again to try their other pastries and coffee!

Finally got a chance to check out the famous Tiong Bahru Bakery (where friends' photos flood my Instagram feed). To be honest, I did find it a lil overrated as I had the Berry Crumble and it was too sour for my liking. >.< The hot chocolate was okay, but nothing spectacular. Maybe I should try out the other pastries next time, or visit the Tiong Bahru branch instead.

The products offerings are proudly displayed. Customers who are interested to buy something (no matter how many) would need to go through this entire stretch where they would be enticed with a visual display of a whole range of food such as bread, pastries, cakes, sandwiches, desserts and coffee. What a smart move!

Croissant one of the items which has been highly raved about. The Plain Croissant was not exactly cheap as it cost $3.20.

The exterior of the Croissant was beautifully baked. It was crisp and flaky. The interior was soft, light and fluffy. Taste wise, it was simple with just the right buttery fragrant to make you keep longing for more. Certainly, one of the better Croissant I have eaten. I like how they kept it simple and original with no fanciful alterations, just the way it should be. Price wise, I would agree that its not cheap. But, it was worth it. Simple yet delicious!

As mentioned earlier, Tiong Bahru Bakery was celebrating it's first anniversary in Raffles City and had a $1 Mini Kouign Amann promotion! As such, we ordered one to share. If you are curious why the promotion was only for Kouign Amann. The reason was because the Kouign Amann is their bestseller.

The Mini Kouign Amann was addictive. Made from bread dough with butter and sugar folded, it was a crisp round pastry with caramelised sugar coating its exterior. The interior was buttery and sweet with a hint of saltiness. The partner liked it so much that we ordered four more pieces to bring back home to indulge.

For me, I thought that both the Mini Kouign Amann and Plain Croissant were equally good and worth indulging in when we are around the area during tea time. We will be back!

The bun tasted stale (possibly due to the squid ink) with an overdose of pesto sauce. Although smoked salmon and parma ham are among my favourite sandwich fillers, these two ingredients clearly did not go well with each other. I am definitely steering clear of this at all cost.

Cereal Ham Sandwich ($9.00 nett)
This cereal sandwich was surprisingly airy and fluffy. The three thick slices of Virginia ham, coupled with rocket salad and mustard sauce, was a delight to savour. Overall, a decent choice, albeit the hefty price tag.

i started with the not-so-exciting croissant ($2.80). but hey, it’s a basic! so if a bakery can do it well, it sets a good foundation for everything else. Tiong bahru bakery does theirs pretty decently. the exterior is beautifully crisp, and i liked breaking off the portions of the crust and popping them into my mouth hehe. it would have been great if it was fluffier inside, but overall, i enjoyed it. it had a nice buttery taste on its own which was nice! and i loved the availability of condiments at the counter to go with it – butter, jam, marmalade and one more which i can’t remember. i’m a sucker for choices

the specialty bun salmon & ham with pesto sauce ($8.90) was rather interesting in appearance. the black bun is because of the squid ink (which thankfully doesn’t leave any stains). in terms of taste though, i found it pretty average.

we enjoyed the croque monsieur which had chorizo and tomato bechamel sauce. the chorizo lent a wonderful flavour to this, and we loved how it went so well with the cheese! yummyyyy

ended on a sweet note with the pandan flan ($6). it had a really interesting eggy interior (kind of like an egg tart actually!), that had a slightly chewy consistency. excellent flavour of the pandan, which was well infused into it. and i loved the crisp pastry!
we were really full by then though, so couldnt enjoy it as much as we would have liked to.

The raisin croissant that I had was equally disappointing and expensive at $4. Sighs, would probably be back, once in a long while for the unforgettable Kouign Amann. Other than that, a big nono.

Tiong Bahru Bakery has been one of the famous cafe that is being recommended for their awesome pastry. So, I decided to give their lemon tart a try, as it is one of their best seller. The crust were a bit hard, however the lemon filling save the tart as it gives me a refreshing taste. If you are someone who likes sour stuff, this tart is definitely recommended for you.
