Eventually I settled for the Salted Egg Yolk and Granny’s Dough. The salted egg yolk is an interesting “east-meets-west” flavour. It tasted much like the salted egg yolks that can be found in mooncakes but with a slight creamy twist. This flavour works especially well if you are more into flavours such as salted caramel; the saltiness of this flavour seems to be done pretty well. For Granny’s Dough it is made up of chocolate, malt and cookie dough. The cookie dough is pretty soft yet crunchy and gave a pretty nice flavour and texture to the ice-cream, with the distinctive chocolate flavour uplifted by the malt.

Upon my arrival at Shaw Towers on Beach Road, it took us quite a bit of effort before we located the parlour. Despite so, we felt no pressure from the young and very friendly staffs who were more than willing to explain the flavours to us in greater details allowing us to firm up our decision. I was definitely impressed with the attentive staffs and what struck me most was when one of the serving ladies said 'Don't need to feel 不客气!' (don't need to feel shy about trying the flavours) cos after sampling some 4-5 flavours, they were pushing us to try more (in a good manner) till we were satisfied with our choices. This was in fact the first time I experienced such good service and when we were done, we had been offered a total of 11 flavours to taste! What reinforced my conviction that their ice cream was good was that we spotted one of the servers sampling some of the ice cream herself!

There was not a single point in time where we felt compelled to make our orders. That being said, the shop was pretty empty with only 2 customers then, but nonetheless their service was surely commendable. Personally, I felt that if one's staffs were relentless in promoting their products, i.e. through food sampling in this instance, that spelled their confidence in the quality of products.

We eventually settled for 4 flavours (1st 4 below), whereby mine was a large (S$5/-) while my lady had a medium serving (S$4/-). You could have the small portion at S$3.20/-which also allowed the flexibility of a combination of 2 flavours, like what we had. All prices were nett, inclusive of GST and service charge.

Salty Yuzu - citrus and tart fruit ice cream
(+) Tasted like a mixture of lemon and mandarin orange or calamansi, very zesty.
(+) A very refreshing burst of tingy-ness upon first taste.

(-) Was hoping for a slight salty aftertaste, but sadly the sea salt was rather insignificant to taste.
(-) Being labelled an ice cream, I was expecting rich cream tastes, but it tasted more like sorbet, though it went well by my books.

Melt and Sizzle
(+) Interesting combination of berries, choco pop chunks that sizzle in your mouth!
(+) A very nostalgic taste which brought back childhood memories of those sizzle candies.
(+) Ice cream was very rich in taste and flavours, not overly sweet.
(+) Complemented by the natural sweetness of the berries.
(+) Similar in taste to Ben and Jerry's 'Cherry Garcia', but with the sizzling pops.

Rudolph - Cream cheese, toffee, chestnut and cranberries
(+) Another interesting flavour and combination of flavours.
(+) Generous amount of cranberries in the serving.
(+) Very rich and thick cream cheese aftertaste. A love or hate relationship in my opinion.

(-) Personally, sweetened cream cheese with cranberries just did not go well with me.
(-) Not a huge fan of rich cheese flavours, so judgment could be other end for some.
(-) Could not really taste much of the chestnut nor toffee, in fact wouldn't know it existed till we double-checked the contents with the server.

Granny's Favourite - melted choc and cookie dough
(+) Tasted like a combination of 'Horlicks' and 'Milo' served as ice-cream.
(+) Unique rich creamy taste, with crunchy shortcake taste.

Chocolate Sorbet
(+) The lack of milk in this sorbet made the cocoa very rich and outstanding.
(+) Bitter initial taste with a subtle sweet aftertaste that was not too heavy on the palette.
(+) Varied taste to a usual milk chocolate ice-cream, with focus on the cocoa for this sorbet.
(+) Would return to enjoy this treat more than just food sampling.

Salted Egg Yolk
(+) One of its kind flavour and certainly the first I had ever tasted.
(+) Tasted almost the same as the egg yolks in mooncakes, served as an ice-cream.
Well, that being said, I almost never eat salted egg yolks in mooncakes and avoid it at all costs due to personal preferences, but for people who swear by them, this is definitely a 'Must-Try'.

Savoury Crunch - potato crisps, praline
(+) Definitely a 'savoury' treat for those who enjoy rich, thick creamy indulgence.

(-) Despite tasting the flavours of potato crisps, it was soft and soggy.

Green Tea
(+) Taste of authentic matcha and not green tea flavouring used by common ice cream.
(+) Rich and creamy enough to satisfy the lady's tastebuds.

(-) However, we felt that a greater concentration or dose of matcha would be ideal.

Vanilla Creme Anglaise
(+) Fine pieces of vanilla pod which gave a beaded texture to the velvety vanilla ice cream.
(+) Enjoyed the varied mouthfeel in this rich, creamy fragrant treat.
(+) If you enjoy plain vanilla, you will almost certainly enjoy this.

Apple Pie
(+) Strong coat of cinnamon, very fragrant and palatable indeed.
(+) Soft chunks of apple flavoured crunch bits helped define the flavours.

(-) Expected to taste soft chunks of apple fruit and not crunch bits.
(-) Being a cynic towards apple cinnamon desserts, I felt that the cinnamon was overpowering and to a certain extent masked the sweetness of apple.

Salted Caramel Cheesecake
(-) Sounded rather unique, but taste wise failed to deliver, was not bad, but not good either.

What was particularly commendable was that when the servers scoop the ice-cream, they all made sure that masks were worn to cover their mouths. A simple gesture as such reassured customers of the high level of hygiene in the handling of their products.

Another attentive aspect which Tom's Palette touched upon was the free flow service of warm/cold mineral water at the back corner of the shop which was also offered at Daily Scoop. It was overlooked but while I was making payment, the server highlighted to our attention with a smile.

The one key unique characteristic which set Tom's Palette apart was the ingenious decorations within the shop. It was simple yet it defined the shop's character. With customers' scribbles and drawings, they were mapped onto the tables, which made every table distinctly different on its own and one of its kind.

Overall, it was a very pleasant experience, largely influenced by the excellent customer service and unique flavours offered. Despite some misses with the flavours, there were definitely some hits which would make me return. The very fact that it was a local homemade ice cream parlour is already itself worthy of a visit.

I was naturally curious about the flavours on display, and the staff very kindly allowed me to sample the flavours before deciding on the 2 flavours I wanted in my cup. Here are the 2 flavours I decided:

Very Bery Matcha- it is the flavour of the month and it is basically rich matcha ice cream combined with blueberry. Since both green tea and blueberry are known to contain antioxidants, this flavour is touted to be a "superfood" haha. The combination of green tea and blueberry went surprisingly well. I enjoyed the slightly bitter sweet matcha paired together with the sweetness of blueberries- an really unique combination. Lavender- I am a big fan of lavender but I was concerned that the lavender taste would be quite mild and not be easily detected. To my surprise, the lavender ice cream served here delivers an intense lavender flavour, a nice floral flavour that filled my cavity with each spoonful of ice cream.

I would definitely return to Tom's Palette to sample more of their quality and unique ice cream flavours!

What's there not to like about Tom's Palette? A cosy shop, Tom's Palette serves up a wide range of artisan ice cream at really affordable prices (compared to other exorbitant places). I particularly like the Granny's favourite where I can taste the chunks and bits of horlick in my mouth as I eat the delicious ice cream. This is a good place to be on hot afternoons where there is a promotion going on for waffles.

They do have pretty exotic flavors. Their mystery flavor is roasted garlic! I can't imagine havig a cup of garlic, even in forms of ice cream.

Their chrysanthemum is pretty refreshing, and the staff did mention that it is made with home cooked chrysanthemum tea, so it would not be that sweet.

Each of their size can have a choice of two flavors. And despite the small-looking cup, the staff do fill it up to the brim. Worth the money spent. Take home pack are available for 12 dollars too.

Remember your student benefits too!

So far still the best ice cream shop compared to udders, scoopz, marble slab, etc, considering the flavours available and the price charged. Smallest size at $3.40 for 2 different flavours; they constantly come up with new flavours for customers to try, even had a 'mystery' flavour. If you happen to go during weekdays from 3-5pm, for every waffle, there will be a free scoop of ice cream; very good a deal. Most shop parlors do it overdosed with peppermint flavor, which it will not taste refreshing but rather like drinking the peppermint oil. But again, Tom's manage to bring out the peppermint flavor and added candy canes to it, which compliment the flavor.

And the best part is, there is student discount!

Don't really like the super sweet type or those offered at those mom and pop stores near the bus stops or under the HDB flat.

Anderson's and Ben & Jerry's are also not my cup of tea.

I prefer Haagen Dazs and those home-made or freshly made ice creams.

I heard of Tom's Palette from an article I read that mentioned how there were unique flavors offered there. The few times I went there, there were always different and special flavors. During the Chinese New Year period, they even had seasonal flavors like Red Dates or Lotus..

What made me want to go there was that they offered Tea flavors. In the picture provided, I chose a Earl Grey Tea and Pink Guava combo. The staff there was spectacular and patient for everyone who wants to try flavors and they understand that there's a lot of flavors to choose from. They are also very generous and really pack the icecream in the size that you choose. It's great that with a small at $3.20 you can get plenty of icecream. It is relatively sweet though, so you may want to choose flavors that compliment one another.

For your info, I did had a sample once and I still don’t quite like it. Well, at least you can’t fault me for not trying!

Flavours are always on a rotational basis so as a rule of thumb, I always sample a few new flavours before buying since you never know you might fall in love with a new taste. Indeed the rich Hazelnut Latte with a hinge of bittersweet coffee aftertaste and the creamy white Coconut are now on my list of favourite scoops!

Don’t hesitate trying a scoop of Melt & Sizzle which is one of the more nostalgic taste that the ice cream parlour has to offer. I have never get drunk on alcoholic ice creams but if you want that pack a punch, feel awed by licking the strong liquor of your spoon with Rum & Raisins! It’s a must-have flavour for my friend whenever he’s chilling at the shop.

Tom’s Palette is one of my favourite ice cream parlours in Singapore. It’s a must go place especially if you’re teen checking out affordable places to hang out with your friends. If you’re a student of selected tertiary institutions, you can enjoy a 10% off your ice creams! But it’s just not fair that this entitlement isn’t extended to NYP students. What a bummer and I can only wonder why…

Since the next day is Good Friday and 1 happened to be in the vicinity while church visiting, I decided to check out this ice-cream parlour with my friend.

From far, I see a group of young students gathering in front of the fridge...Wow, seems like the place is packed on eve of public holiday. Despite the huge crowd in front, the friendly service staff greeted us warmly and introducing on their new flavours. they are super friendly and offer to let us sample some ice-cream even though we did not request for. I'm impressed by the way the staff are being train and they do know how to handle customers and introduce the flavours accordingly to customer's preference.

My friend tried the chocolate sorbet and before she can express her dislike on it, the service staff ask her is it because she prefers a creamery choice hence finds the dark chocolate sorbet too dry for her liking? True enough, my friend felt the same way and was offered to try chocolate banana.

My selection: Mocha Macnut & Chocolate Sorbet
Friend's selection: Salted Egg & Chocolate Banana

I'm a coffee and and dark chocolate lover hence the ice-cream which I've chosen are suits my taste perfectly. Dark chocolate are isn't too dry and they mild sweet...guess the % isn't that high. Mocha Macnut is well blended whereby it's not too overwhelming with coffee taste & I can still taste the fragrant of oily macadamia nuts.

Salted Egg
my 1st time tasting salty ice-cream! Isn't ice-cream supposed to be sweet?! And of all flavours... salted egg? the though of it reminds me of eating Teochew porridge! Lolz...But to my surprise, it taste GREAT! Simple fantastic..throw away the thoughts of real salty egg yolk as it TOTALLY doesn't have the flaky oily egg yolk nor super salty egg white taste. In fact, it's a well blended creamy yolk taste with a mild saltiness minus away the egg stink smell! Great!

Besides the great taste, friend service staff, another factor which i like is the REASONABLE PRICE. Considered cheap as compared to other artisan ice-cream. Less that $$ and i get to eat 2 different flavours. What's more, polytechnics and universities students gets additional 10%!

Absolutely love this place. I would definitely have ice cream after eating at Ah Loy Thai (another awesome thai food place opposite Tom's Palette). Reasonably priced, Tom's Palette offers student discount as well. They have lots of flavours which are different daily, and they continually come up with new creations. I have tried many flavours and my all time favourite would still be GRANNY'S FAVOURITE. also delicious: Yuzu, the flavour with poppin' candy, milk ice cream, and so on.
