Veggie Cottage is a 100% vegan eatery located right behind The Verge shopping mall, along Dalhousie Lane. Vegan food doesn't seem like the sort of food that I normally would try as I never thought mock meat was a close substitute of real meat. By a strong recommendation by a friend, we decided to head to this cozy little place for dinner! I definitely fell in love with this place. The interior design of this place is European-styled with mini paintings hanging from plain white walls. There were also the menu items handwritten on a few blackboards, adding a sense of personal touch to the place. The furniture were all-white, giving it a clean feel. It's as if I stepped into a person's living room... I felt really comfortable and fuzzy on the inside!

There is also a children's drawing corner to keep kids busy while the adults indulge in their after-meal chatter. The whole construction of the place is really thoughtful.

Their signature dish is the Spaghetti Bolognese ($6.50), which I thought sounds like something I would normally order... did I already mention this is a vegan place? It's amazing how they created this dish without adding meat at all, and yet achieve an extraordinary dimension in the sauce by using merely soy, mushroom, onions and tomatoes! The sauce is savoury, less tangy and does well to complement the al dente pasta.

That being said, the texture of the pasta itself is just perfect albeit it being slightly on the bland side. I'm impressed and have already forgotten about the existence of meat in my life. For first-timers at Veggie Cottage, try this.

A main dish turned side-dish in accordance to a special request - Sweet & Sour Tofu [Rice Set] ($6.50). This would be better with some rice because the sauce is overly tangy and sweet for me. Immersed in the thick gooey tomato sauce are carrot slices, bell pepper slices, mushrooms and tofu. I would order something else though.

Out of my love for caffeine and soy, I was thrilled to see this on the menu: Soy Chocolate Latte ($4.50). It was really smooth and the temperature was lukewarm but not scalding hot, making both my stomach and my tastebuds really happy. The soy taste could have been a little more obvious though, and perhaps they could allow customers to choose the proportions like bubble tea shops (ie. 30% latte, 70% soy) or something similar.

The service is here is really thoughtful, and the lady at the counter/taking orders was friendly and patient with us
That being said, there was no service charge/GST. The prices were really low for their much-better quality relative to those restaurants in shopping malls. One of those hidden gems that I wished lesser people would know of (so that I can always have empty tables when I return or in case they marked up prices in future), but I think Veggie Cottage deserves so much more attention and hype!

Situated on 13 Dalhousie road, just behind The Verge, Veggie Cottage is a beautifully decorated, cozy café, that surprise surprise, serves vegetarian & Vegan food. It has a distinct feel of coffee shops located in the remote areas of Scotland.

The place is an all self-service place, with menu’s hand written on blackboards pinned to the walls.

Moving to the food (I am still so caught up in the ambiance), the all Vegan options are quite unique and well spread. Even though the menu is not that extensive, the choices are quite interesting. Just a caveat, the place is already getting its fair share of visitors, and their most popular items often run out by lunch time. Alright, this is what we tried.

[1] Drinks: Soy Milk Latte: The Soy milk latte was actually quite nicely made. I am no soy milk fan, and honestly I cannot stand the taste of plain soy milk… but the latte was actually yum. A perfect option for a vegan.

[2] Basket of fries ($2): The well-seasoned, crispy fries, served in the cutest little basket you can think of.

[3] Samosas ($3.50): A nice plate of 6 medium sized samosas was what we tried next. From the taste of it, it looked like they were those ready to eat frozen veggie samosas you get at a Fairprice… however, the taste was quite nice.

[4] Spring roll & Curry Puff ($1 each piece):The curry puff was actually very very tasty. It looked baked, as there was no real oil I could feel on my fingers. And if it was fried, I must say, nicely done. The spring rolls were good too. However, as my friend rightly pointed out, they were bland, with almost no salt.

[5] Spaghetti Bolognese (with onions) ($5): Spaghetti Bolognese, made out of what I assumed is mock meat, is a dish that contains onion, but I have to tell you, it is one of the best mock meat Bolognese I have had! Further, the potion is decently large… good enough for one person’s lunch or dinner main.

It's crowded on weekends, so reservation is recommended!
