The interior of the restaurant is designed using rather muted colors and feels like you’ve just stepped into a cruise ship or a submarine. Stretched across the entire length of the restaurant is a majestic viewing panel looking out into the world’s largest aquarium. The expanse of endless blue can be quite mesmerizing and soothing to the senses. And it makes for a perfect location to bring your date, if only the food was better.

A pungent Burnt Onion Soup to start off the meal is really exactly what everyone wishes to have for their romantic night out (being sarcastic here). Pair it up with Black Truffle and I can guarantee that there will be no frenching for the rest of the evening. Imagine taking 10 onions, sautéing them until slightly burnt, then blending it all down into a single espresso cup. Not the most ideal way to start a romantic dinner, really.

After that overpowering soup, I was dragged across to the other end of the taste spectrum with a rather bland Alaskan Crab Salad ($30). Topped with mashed up avocado, the crab meat sits in a pool of chilled corn soup. Avocado and crab meat is an awesome pairing but I probably would have enjoyed this dish more if I didn’t still have that aftertaste of the Burnt Onion Soup in my mouth.

For the main course, I ordered the Seared Kurobuta Pork Belly and Fried Octopus ($60). While it looked rather appetizing, I didn’t quite comprehend the flavours in this dish. First, you have pork belly sitting in a pool of soy sauce and right next to it is a puree of apple-sauerkraut. Then you have some mashed up cabbage in a roll and a dollop of mustard on the side. Sweet, salty, sour, spicy, bland – all in a single dish. Not to mention that the Fried Octopus has a really strong fishy taste to it too. I just can’t begin to imagine why anyone would enjoy having such an adventurous symphony of tastes in a single dish.

Another letdown is the dessert – Dark Chocolate Brownie Pistachio & Ice Cream ($25). Even Häagen-Dazs serves better brownies than this, though the chocolate espuma on the side was rather good. The brownie on its own was airy and crumbly, not the moist and rich type of cake that I love.

Overall, the food failed to impress me on so many levels and even with the awesome view of the aquarium, I left the restaurant feeling rather unsatisfied. Would I recommend this restaurant to anyone (even for the ‘once in a lifetime’ dining experience)? Definitely not. If you want to be wow-ed by the spectacular view of the marine life, please just get your S.E.A. Aquarium tickets for $33 and not waste money eating at Ocean Restaurant.
