I must be one of the last Singaporeans standing on this island trying the famous Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice. It is so widely known, it is almost a local treasure in the realms of Singapore delicacy. I caught sight of Maxwell Food Centre while running errands today and decided that I should give it a try since I'm already in the area. The waiting time is almost ten minutes, much longer than expected... but they say good things are worth waiting, so I shall. At $3.50 for a plate of their sign

The waiting time is almost ten minutes, much longer than expected... but they say good things are worth waiting, so I shall. At $3.50 for a plate of their signature chicken rice, it is the average pricing for most hawker stalls.

So... the verdict? The first impression was that Tian Tian is definitely above average but not exactly as godly as it has always been described to be. Perhaps I couldn't withdraw my stratospheric expectations for this award-winning and widely acclaimed best chicken rice. The rice is very fragrant on its own already but a little too oily for me - the drizzling of the sesame oil was a little overkill. The chicken itself was good - tender and succinct. Their chilli sauce is different from the usual, I could taste a little tangy taste in it - lemon, maybe - and it is powerfully packed with a lot of chilli padi! Not for the faint-hearted. An 8/10 for chicken rice, my favourite remains to be the one at Redhill Food Centre.
