Xi Yan was first started by Jack Yu, a designer-turned-celebrity-chef In Hong Kong in year 2000. It is known for its modern and inventive Chinese food and has a reservation only outlet in Craig Road. Recently it has expanded to an outlet in Shaw Centre for casual dining. No reservation is allowed except for special events. Remember to leave your name at the counter for a table and check regularly. I have gotten my name striked off for no reason and have waited quite long for a table. Luckily we spot the problem when we go up to have a check.
Tables are placed quite near to each other. Some may have problem getting out of the seat.
The table setting is plain and simple.
The menu is limited but with reasonable priced items.
Hong Fook Tong American Ginseng with Honey 鴻福堂花旗参蜜 ($3.50)The ginseng drink tastes light with hint of the ginseng taste and not too sweet.
Kamquat Honey Drink (cold) 润喉柑桔蜜（冷）($3.80)A refreshing drink to have.
Deep Fried Pork Belly in Fermented Bean Curd Sauce 腐乳炸腩肉 ($9.80)The meat is quite lean without any fatty part. We are both disappointed that there is not any fatty part.
Fried XO Chai Po Radish Cakes XO 菜脯萝卜糕 ($7.80/ small)It tastes quite average.
"Pregnant Woman" Fried Rice 大肚婆炒饭 ($9.80)It lacks of wok feel and tastes a bit too oily to me.
Salivating Spicy Chicken 囍宴金牌口水鸡 ($9.80/ small)Tender and smooth chicken meat which is enhanced by the spicy sauce.
Basil Satay Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk 金不换沙爹蛋黄虾 ($12.80/ small)I feel that the prawns are not crispy enough and lacking of the satay sauce taste.
Deep Fried Shrimp Paste Fish Fillet with Pomelo and Water Chestnut Salad 虾酱炸鱼柳 ($12.80/ small)Firstly it looks much better than what is showed on the menu. Although we cannot taste any shrimp paste on the fish, it is quite juicy and crunchy. The sauce adds a tangy touch to it. However cannot taste any water chestnut.
Tofu Ice Cream with Pandan Glutinous Rice (1 scoop) 私房豆腐雪糕班兰叶糯米（一球）($4.50)It has a creamy texture but I feel that it is a bit too sweet. The glutinous rice is too dry and hard. Maybe it would be better if it is topped with some coconut milk.
Salted Egg Yolk Pumpkin Ice Cream with Pandan Glutinous Rice (1 scoop)南瓜咸蛋雪糕配班兰叶羺米（一球）($4.50)The ice cream tastes like pumpkin puree, creamy and not too sweet. I am a bit disappointed as I have not tasted any salted egg yolk in it.
Total bill for 2 persons is $93.10. Overall the food is not bad. The place looks understaffed, as we have problem getting the attention of the staff. So do not need to look for the staff to refill water.
