Went there on a lazy afternoon to try the infamous dum biryani.Ordered the chicken dum biryani. Cost $7 per person. A lime juice cost $2 here. Rather ridiculous since it's really sugar syrup with a lime piece in cold water. There's a sign that says they are not trying to make big bucks. Just trying to make good food. Went there on a lazy afternoon to try the infamous dum biryani.

Ordered the chicken dum biryani. Cost $7 per person. A lime juice cost $2 here. Rather ridiculous since it's really sugar syrup with a lime piece in cold water. There's a sign that says they are not trying to make big bucks. Just trying to make good food. There is a Chinese old man serving and the owners and cooks are obviously Indian. The Indian men are all really big with really huge pot bellies and dirty shirts!

You are served a couple of papadums before the meal. There was no one there and the place was dark. The walls are red. Really odd decor.

You can't see the chicken pieces as they are buries in the rice. You couldn't tell what meat is in the rice until you placed it in your mouth. You can smell the fragrance of the rice as it arrives in front of you.

When you tuck in, nothing much happens till the 4th or 5th bite. Then the spices start kicking in. There're cloves and whole black peppers in the rice so you have to be careful not to chomp on those or you'll die of spice explosion in your mouth. There seems to be a lot of spice pieces in the chicken dum biryani. You have to push your rice around the plate and be careful to pick out the spices or risk having to spit them out when they get stuck in your teeth or burn your tongue.

The cook says he doesn't use ghee. Well, I would have preferred that he did so as to make it even more fragrant. It's supposed to be healthier but by the end of the meal our mouths were so oily, it's like we were slathering oil on our faces. The chicken dum biryani is spicy due to the amount of whole black peppers in it. Maybe they accidentally tipped a whole bag in!

By the end of the meal, you're stuffed because it's pretty oily. Overall, it's tasty enough with a generous serving. But at $7 per person and $2 for a lime juice, I find that Tekka Market down the road has better dum biryani for cheaper!

There is no menu and no indication of prices. So better ask before you order anything. I wouldn't say this is the best place for dum biryani, even for the supposedly low cost. As you walk in, the cook self-proclaims that it's the best dum biryani in Singapore. I think not! Passable.
