My family is Hakka and when we came to People's Food Centre for lunch on Sunday, my dad INSISTED that I try the legendary Yong Tau Fu, which only opens for an hour or so at lunch time, selling till they run out of ingredients. To be honest, I didn't find anything fantastic about the food. The soup was flavorful, but nothing to rave about. The stuffed tofu, fried items, and fishballs were normal. But I found myself growing to like it as I ate; the combination of the soup and ingredients, plus the chilli+sweet sauce combo sauce, matched each other very well. It was surprisingly filling and "just right" for me, and despite all the fried stuff it didn't feel too oily, probably because it was freshly made. Quite a nice change from the heavy and oily hawker food. I still think that it's something I'm not used to but I would definitely try it again when I go back!
