A few of my ex classmates who catch up several times a year like to gather at Out of the Pan Cafe which surrounds the iconic indoor fountain at Raffles City B1. This Cafe has somehow dropped off our radar as we took to checking out the many new restaurants that have popped up recently. We decided to revisit Out of the Pan for our New Year getogether as we have fond memories of it as a hip place for a pleasurable light meal and long conversations. There was no deja vu this time. The Cafe's floor
We ordered the mushroom crepe and salmon crepe for our entrees, and the banana split waffle and tiramisu crepe for dessert.
Food quality remains consistently good, but service standards are now more lax. Previously our glasses will be topped up without being asked, and the wait-staff would name the dish when they brought the plates to our table. Now the dishes are just placed on the table and the servers would leave. The mushroom crepe was light and tasty, but the smoked salmon crepe was a little salty. The amount of filling in both types of savoury crepes has shrunk and the crepes were too loosely rolled up, so some of the filling would drop out when we sliced the crepes using the table knives provided. With menu prices raised to cover inflation, we did not expect the portion to shrink.
Thankfully, the desserts have not shrunk in terms of portion sizes, and taste-wise standards have been maintained. The tiramisu crepe was smooth and creamy, with coffee liqueur taste being discernible and the accompanying espresso gelato having a clear taste of caffeine. The signature banana split waffle needs no introduction (see photo); the chocolate gelato was tastefully rich, complementing the crispy waffle and ripe but firm Del Monte banana well, providing a happy contrast of flavours and textures. The desserts uplifted our overall dining experience. We will return here just for the desserts.
