I've always loved the Indian vegetarian food here at Raj restaurant. They offer a wide variety of North and South Indian dishes. We have a group of 4 dining here today, so we ordered some dishes and Naan to share. We had 2 samosas for starters. I was quite surprised to see that the samosa each came on a big plate with 2 dips - a mint/coriander chutney and and a sweetish sauce dip. The samosa (the indian version of a curry puff) itself tasted really good enough on its own without the dips - spicy
The garlic naans (baked tandoori bread) we ordered were soft & fluffy and not overly chewy - just nice, very good with the garlic and herbs. They went very well when eaten together with the gravies and sauces.
Here's a recommended combination of dishes you can try:
Aloo Gobi : Potatoes and cauliflower tossed in a delectable dry gravy. The potatoes and cauliflower were cooked till soft in a dry masala-like sauce - I like!
Paneer Kalimirch : Home made cottage cheese, served in cashew nut gravy, with crushed
pepper corns and fenugreek. The cashew nut gravy was very smooth and creamy but yet not heavy-tasting. The crushed pepper corns added plenty of hotness to the dish, but it was good. Cottage cheese itself has not much taste as that's how they are, but the sauce eaten together with the cheese is a pretty good combination.
Bhindi Masala : Ladies fingers fried and cooked in thick tomato masala gravy. The ladies fingers were cooked till soft and very well-immersed in the tasty masala gravy which had tomatoes in it too. A really yummy dish as well.
For all the dishes, there were plenty of spices in addition to the regular chili-hot fieriness to add dimension to the dishes. Really lovely!
Even if you are not a regular diner of Indian food, the menu here has comprehensive descriptions for all the items, which makes selecting the dishes much easier for non-Indians.
If you are in a mood for nice & authentic Indian vegetarian food, give this place a try!
