Shopping around the chinatown, we notice this shop selling traditional cakes. One item that caught my eye is its version of cup cake. Here it is selling traditional version, which is plain with no fancy decoration on top of the cake. I buy 3 pieces which costs $1.80. The cupcake looks well baked with its dark skin. Inside it tastes quite soft and fluffy.

Da Sheng Hong Kong Pastry in Chinatown sells such classic confectioneries as wife cakes, egg tarts and century egg pastries. The lotus seed pastry with egg yolk looks very flaky and golden brown. The pastry is quite light and flaky. The lotus seed is quite smooth, not too sweet and far from cloying. The egg yolk looks fresh with its bright and oily surface. Overall it really tastes very good.

It was my break after work. I was feeling a bit hungry and tired, so I was looking for something sweet to eat to perk me up. There, I saw many different pastries on display. All of them look appealing to me. I had no idea what to choose considering the cost and my taste preferences. After much thought, I picked on the wife pastry and the lotus seed pastry with egg yolk. The wife pastry appears glossy and golden brown. The skin is flaky. The filling is clear white, sweet and chewy. It looks and tastes like mochi. The lotus seed pastry with egg yolk is a bit glossy and likewise golden brown. It looks to me like something I've had before but I can't remember... Ah yes, it is a mini Shanghai mooncake, just that it has sesame seeds on the top of it instead of pine nuts or almonds to make it more appealing. Like the wife pastry, the skin is flaky too. The lotus paste is sweet and as sandy as red bean paste. The salted egg yolk is bright orange. It is crumbly and not so salty. The salted egg yolk complements with the lotus paste as the saltiness of the egg yolk balances the sweetness of the lotus paste.

These pastries not only look good, they taste good too. There are other pastries the shop sells such as egg tarts and sponge cakes. Well, I do not mind going there another time.

Egg tarts are one of my favourite snacks and the one sold here are one my favourite version as well. Especially like the custard filling as it is full of nice thick fragrant from the eggs and milk used in making it. The texture of the filling is very smooth ang not too watery. The crust outside it is very crispy and not too sweet. By having a cup of hot beverage to go along with these egg tarts are certainly very satisfying and delicious.
