Dian Xiao Er is the place where I get my chinese food fix, the specialty duck is definitely our must-have every time we dine at Dian Xiao Er. Have saw the ads in Tiong Bahru Plaza that the dim sum menu is exclusively available at the Tiong Bahru Plaza outlet. So, we finally made our way there to try the dim sum.Ordered our favourite Custard Bun ($4.20), we have never tried the dim sum here before, so we ordered a number of items to try. The Custard Buns were very small, I think this is the smallest custard buns I have ever seen! Taste wise, it was quite nice, the oozing and bursting flavour of the custard was good, but I felt that it was just too small! We like how the Carrot cake ($3.60) is pan fried to its crispy and brown texture. We could taste the carrot bits with each bite, good and tasty! The Fried Mango Fritters ($4.20) isn't too bad, but I felt that the crispy shreds was too much, it seems that we had to eat a lot of the fried shreds before we could taste the mango inside. This didnt quite please me, won't order this again the next time. If you like fried items, the Fried Prawn Dumpling with Mayo ($3.90) is not a bad choice. Dip it with mayo and enjoy the crispiness on the outer part and freshness of the prawn inside. The Banana & Prawn Roll ($4.20) is a very pleasing dessert. Eaten hot, the taste of the banana and prawn blends well and gives a melt in the mouth feeling. A sweet delight! We love the Jin Chuan Dumpling ($3.90), especially with the special garlic sauce, it is a bit sour and spicy, just like hot and sour soup... nice and appetising! However, it didnt look as nice as it tasted! When I saw it being served, I though it looks like a frozen dumpling to me. It didnt help that it was served on a small sauce dish and not a plate, presentation was very bad!The rice roll with char siew ($4.20) was a disappointment. The skin of the rice roll was dull and tasteless, and the char siew was equally bad. The rice roll and char siew couldnt blend, taste test fail!  The Yam Cake ($3.60) was a pleasant surprise, it didnt look very nice on the appearance, but it tasted true to its ingredients and is rich and yammy! The congee ($3.30) is the usual nice chinese style congee, with bits of pork and century egg, comforting and warm! The dim sum is average over at Dian Xiao Er, a few items disappointed while a few was nice though not fantastic. The menu is not very extensive too, I was looking for Fried Spring Roll but couldn't find any, I thought this should be on every dim sum menu! Still, it is worth trying the dim sum here. But I most probably wont try it a second time though, as I still prefer the main courses and the specialty duck at Dian Xiao Er!There is a 35% Senior Citizens & Students discount on dim sum when we visited at about 2pm for late lunch. The discount is applicable at two slots from 10 - 11.30am and 2 - 4.30pm. Quite a good deal! continue reading

I must praise the staff here for their consistent friendly service. Very hospitable experience.Dian Xiao Er here has its interior styled in the cheena ancient setting. For this dish as seen in the picture, I felt a little cheated. The menu said its chicken wings but all that came was drumlets. They stripped the drumlets midway and the effect is that of a meatier look. Taste was good. If you enjoy the taste of marmite, you have to try this. The meat was tender and due to the stripping of the meat and skin, it is much easier to eat. continue reading

At Tiong Bahru Plaza second level, there is an area with several restaurants located side by side of each other. One of them is Dian Xiao Er which was newly opened only in June this year. As a roasted duck lover, I was thrilled and I went there few weeks back.Upon stepping to the entrance of the restaurant, I was greeted by a friendly waitress whose uniform mimicked like the ancient china waiter (xiao er aka 小二). On top of that, the renovation of the restaurant made me feel as if I was transported back to the ancient china era where there are kunfu masters and swordmen. However there are also a modern touch with the glass wall between the roasted duck preparation section and the restaurant that enticed passerby of the restaurant to come in and try the roasted duck. The dishes of the night were assorted mushroom with broccoli ($13.30), Ginseng Roasted Duck ( $13.90), Marmite Chicken wings ($10.30), Old Style Steamed Sliced Fish ($12.30), a bowl of white rice ( $1) and 2 warm water ($0.60) with a total spending of $54.45Ginseng Roasted Duck I have ordered the small portion( there are 2 portion to choose from) but personally i find the portion quite big and is good for 2~3 pax if you order many dishes. The duck meat is really tender and with a very aromatic herbal smell. On top of that, the skin is crispy and the overall taste is a joy to the taste buds. Best of all, the gravy of the herbal duck goes really well with the rice. Thus I highly recommend anybody who order this to dish to order a bowl of rice to go with it. However to take note that the gravy is inclined to the sweet side, if you prefer something savory do seek advice from the serving crew for recommendations. =)Marmite Chicken wingsThis dish is quite interesting. Although it's named marmite chicken wings but what I had was drumlets which were deep fried and coated with a sweet tasting sauce and sesame seeds. However I like the idea that the meat was prepared in such a way that it has semi de-boned to the top of the drumlet. Thus it was very easy to eat it even if you are not a good chopstick user. =)Old Style Steamed Sliced FishThis is a beautiful dish that is steamed with many ingredients such as mushrooms, pork strips, spring onion..etc. The end product is a plate of fresh savory sliced fish that goes very well with some rice.Assorted mushroom with broccoliPersonally I feel that this is a perfect dish for mushroom lovers. Beside having shitake mushroom, there also 2 other types of mushrooms. On top of that, the broccoli was cooked to perfection and went really well with the mushrooms or the gravy.Overall it was a good dinning experience at Dian Xiao Er. Beside having friendly and helpful serving crews, the food was served quite swiftly without compromising with the quality of the food. On top of that, the waitress who served me even gave me advice so as not to over ordered. Thus making it a very pleasant and heartwarming dinning experience. continue reading

This is currently the only branch that provide dim sum. Overall the dim sum is not bad, hot and fresh. We love the ten wonder herb duckMedium portion (more than enough for 4 of us). $25.30. Tender and tasty duck. Though there is 10 herb in it, but there is no bitter taste at all, and taste slightly sweet. Nice!!There is 25% for all dim sum at 10am to 11.30am, and 2pm to 4.30pm (wkdays).. and 20% off total bill for senior citizen and students. ( please check with them for promotion.
