Early dinner with Sam at Hifumi Japanese Restaurant, a new Japanese Restaurant located at extension of Plaza Singapura.I ordered Salmon Oyako Jyu (Salmon w/Roe on rice). One of the few items that interest me is probably the ChawanMushi, which is really smooth & the Potato w/Roe!

The appetizer bar is located at the centre of the restaurant. It serves varieties of appetizer which includes potato salad, tofu gratin, pumpkin salad, cheese fondue, rice cracker to name a few that i can remember. And free flow chawanmushi served. It is immediately clear off the moment it is served. Refillable drinks are an additional $1.99++ when you order set meal. You can have varieties range of drinks to choose from. I think this one of the value added choice in Hifumi. However, the appetizer bar choices are always running low. The moment the appetizer served, customers will quickly whip off it within minutes. So, we need to act fast before the dishes are gone!

Alex ordered the monthly special (March) named Teriyaki Chicken Set @ S$13.99 per set.It served with miso soup, rice & all-you-can eat appetizer bar. The juicy chicken and original teriyaki sauce was served within 20 minutes. Taste wise is ok only.

Sis ordered Chicken Itame Set @ S$14.99 which is recommended set in the menu. The set consists of stir-fried chicken and vegetables in black vinegar sauce. The chicken texture is slightly soggy for me. I don’t really enjoyed it. Overall taste is ok for me only.

I ordered baked chicken set @S$11.99 consists of baked chicken with japanese pepper sauce. The presentation looks attractive and the portion wise is just nice for per person. The taste has chinese fusion taste cooking style.

As for the service wise, i personally think there is room of improvement. We have hard time getting the staff’s attention to place order. We also saw some of the customers wave hands getting attention from the service crew as well. My rice bowl was cracked when it is served. I noticed it and called for the staff. The manager apologized and send his staff to make replacement for me. However, i was kinda shocked when a new bowl of rice was served in front of me without informing me. I think this is not a good attitude to serve the customer like this.

Overall, dining experience was ok only but I will not queue for that long for the foods though although the set meal price is affordable.

Ordered a set of Pork Katsuni ($11.90) - fried pork cutlet with onion and egg. Decent meal and quite soggy, nothing to shout at but below average standard. Set comes with rice and miso soup.

Had this chicken itame set at $14.99. This dish totally failed. There is no black vinegar taste and it's a far cry from what ootoya is offering. They offered fried green chilli in their vegetables and others. This comes with miso soup and rice as well.

Service
Service is not good. It's hard to get service/attention from the workers.

Ambience
Ambience is ok. It's a kind of open dinning and you get to see the inner malls and other food outlets as I'm seated beside the parapet.

Price
If food is good, the pricing they offered isnt an issue. Seriously no to their standard!

Recommendation / Tips
There is no way I will make a return for my meal there unless the standard turns better!

My friend recommended this place to me so i decided to try out this jap place at the new extension of plaza sing. unlimited servings of appetisers! So, I brought my friends here one Saturday afternoon to see what it was all about.

We arrived there around lunch time and surprisingly, there was no queue. Here's how it goes:
You can order any of their set meals, which is priced from $12 to $20 dollars. Quite reasonable, right, for it also includes free flow drinks plus the all-you-can eat appetisers. However, you are only given 1.5 hours to finish your food for they say that weekend is a busy day for the resto.
I had the monthly special, the chicken teriyaki with special sauce. Since we only had limited time to eat there, they were quite fast in serving our orders. But when my food came, the chicken pieces were smaller than in the photo! Haha. But the chicken was crispy outside and very tender and juicy inside. The miso soup was good—it warmed my hungry stomach!

As for the appetiser bar… it was a big disappointment. Most of the items there were cold when they should be warm. For example, the Vegetables seemed like they came from the fridge, not heated, and served right away. The cheese fondue was also very saddening for it was soo watery, it was bordering on gross.

After my first trip there, I didn’t dare go back. I just finished my meal and my friends and I left the restaurant.

Went to Hifumi the 3rd time and the salad bar has more varieties now! The chawanmushi is really nice and there are now seafood dumplings and soba noodles. However, the main course doesn't taste that good. I ordered the baked chicken and curry vegetable set but both are a little disappointing because of too much salt added in. Price overall is reasonable since you have free access to the salad bar.

SERVICE

The surroundings of the restaurant - quiet and peaceful during non-peak hour. The crowd start to kick in at about 6.30pm onwards. Good place to sit down and have some chat while waiting to go for the 2nd round of appetizer and drinks!

Hifumi is located at Plaza Singapore #04-68 (at near Dhoby Ghaut station) - Orchard Road. Warning- Mrupupup ate too much food in Hifumi! Really felt like a 'value for money' buffet. Arhhhhh... the sweet potato sticks in the salad bar was just so nice!

I was quite surprised to see the reviews and my friends telling me that Hifumi has long queues - when I there, it was almost only half-filled at lunch time (around 12 plus) - and there was only a short queue of one group of people when I left. It was a Sunday, by the way.

What attracted me to try Hifumi: It really looks very modern, has a lot of choices, and the price is within my acceptable range (ie. $10 - 18). Above all, there was this eat-all-you-can appetizer bar with every set meal you buy!

There's soups, rice crackers, fruits, yams, sweet potatoes ... many things you can choose from and it's only just appetizer! If you want to get only the appetizer, it's $10.99++ per person. My faovurite appetizer was the sweet potatoes and pomegranate jelly with fruits.

Here are some other photos of the menu:

I ordered the Chicken Oyakuni Set - $15.20 after GST/service charge. It was really quite salty for me, and it seems like there were many eggs used inside this entire dish. By the time I finished the appetizers and three-quarters of this, I was feeling quite full already from it. There were also pieces of chicken and onions inside this. The rice portion was also insufficient to complement this salty dish. The dish was less than satisfactory, in my opinion. Would try something else instead next time, if I come back.

THey have a really good deal with all you can eat appetizer buffet for any set meal you ordered.

I ordered the chicken Oyakoni set with miso soup and rice-- basically chicken sauteed in a hot plate with eggs and onion. Quite yummy but a tad salty. My bf ordered the fried chicken set or chicken Tatsuta set. Chicken was actually very good, especially when you squeeze the lemon on it. However, i find it quite expensive for the small portion. Also, if you eat it just like that with the rice is quite dry.

However, because the set meals come with the all you can eat appetizer buffet, it was very worth it! THere were alot of interesting vegetable-based food such as a sort of kimchi cucumber, steamed baby corn and brocoli, sauteed eggplant in tomato sauce, a type of cheese fondue, chawanmushi, and this very tasty tofu tartine! I think i can be quite full by eating the appetizer buffet alone but since it cost $10.99 to only eat the appetizers it is better to order a set and then get the buffet free!

Will definitely come back for the value-for-money-meals!

Big eaters will be glad to know that this restaurant provides all-you-can-eat appetizer bar. The restaurant promises over 10 choices of appetizers available for every set meal purchased.

The appetizer bar actually only occupies a small corner near the entrance, but well it's free flow APPETIZERS, not a free flow BUFFET and appetizers are meant to be enjoyed in small doses. Thankfully the appetizer dishes were refilled regularly when I visited. The drinks counter is behind, but they do have additional charges ($1.99) for free flow access to their drinks bar.

They will provide a small black dish for you to place your appetizers on, ONLY ONE, that's why I resorted to cramming the appetizers on the plate. There were several Japanese style dishes available when I visited. I personally enjoyed the cold dishes offered like their chewy Jellyfish with plum dressing, Pumpkin and Walnut Salad, Potato salad. I also had my fill of cherry tomatoes, sweet potato fries and stewed eggplant. There was also a chawanmushi steamer at the appetizer bar, which serves miniscule bowl sized steamed egg. I lost count of the number of mini bowls I grabbed from the steamer.

For the main course, I had their Tonkatsu Set ($13.99), which came with a serving of rice and miso soup. The breaded deep fried pork cutlet was rather ordinary, perhaps too dry for my liking. I will probably go for another of their main course next time. They had a number of other main courses to choose but is it strange that I actually enjoyed stuffing myself with their bite sized appetizers than the actual main course itself?

Really love their jelly fish appetizer, it's crunchy and fresh and served chilled. Their potato salad is also worth raving about, my friend made a few trips to the bar just to get her potato craving satisfied.
The chawanmushi is the fastest moving item on the bar - two minutes after a new batch was dished out, people just swarm over to snatch the little cups of steamed eggs. My two friends and I had two cups each.

My set dinner - fresh salmon with lotus root marinated in vinegar. Healthy and light to the palate.

Average spending per person is less than $20 which I think it's quite affordable for the quality AND quantity of food.

I have walked past this place a couple of times and was always attracted by the long snaking queue and yesterday I decided to try out this new kid on the block with my family. I had read about mixed reviews of this place and I thought to myself that surely this place should be worth queuing since no matter what time I walked past, be it non peak or peak hours, there will be a queue.

After queuing up for 40minutes and spotting a few empty uncleared tables while waiting, we were finally seated down. Evidently, the place is understaffed and more specifically with inexperienced staff. There was clearly only the manager (the one dressed in all black) doing all the work as the others, seemingly inexperienced post 'O' level students were idling- walking around nonchalantly and taking small little breaks in the kitchen. There was also only 1 elderly staff who was busy serving the food to the customers and this poor cashier who was running about- serving customers and also handling the payments. All in all, the whole place was in a mess therefore there was nothing much to be expected in terms of service.f

Other than the poor service encountered, the food was fairly disappointing. I believe what attracted the patrons in the first place was the lure of the 'all-you-can-eat appetizers' and the free flow of drink at a mere $1.99 top-up. Frankly speaking, after calculating carefully, it is definitely not cheap at all. At an average price of $13.99++ for a main dish with soup and rice and the appetizers, it may seemed to be a good deal but the serving of the main dish is fairly small and the 'buffet' was hardly topped up at all (another sign of them understaffed). You can spot many patrons waiting eagerly for the chawanmushi only to see it being snapped up within a minute. I had waited for the refill of a few dishes ( marinated radish, toufu, cheese fondue veg) for 1 hour yet by the time I left, all were not refilled yet.

In the month of dec, the in-house special dish was the hokkiado curry and my mum had ordered the dish with chicken. The portion of the chicken was actually quite small. For me, I had pork belly with ginger sauce. The sauce was too sweet for my liking and there was very little taste of the ginger. Overall the meat was very salty as well. My brother had katsudon and look at how small the portion was. The egg was also a tad too runny and therefore at a price of 12.99, everything is definitely overpriced since for the same price, I believe that I can get better food elsewhere, and even a cheaper price in food-courts.

Evidently, people had queued for the novelty therefore for the poor service and standard of the food, I would strongly
not recommended!
