Standing at the large, newly-added atrium of Plaza Singapura, at a loss of what to have for dinner as there were simply too many restaurants and we were spoilt for choice! In the end, *Cheyene suggested having dinner at Hifumi Japanese Restaurant after we walked around the atrium twice.

Hifumi is located at 68 Orchard Road #04-68 Dhoby Ghaut MRT Atrium, Singapore 238839 and the number to dial is 6338 4712. So here we were, being warmly welcomed into the clean-cut, pretty Japanese restaurant that was spacious and had a very hearty feel to it - think, brightly lit, earthly hues, and tables of happy diners chattering away while attacking their food.

What caught our attention was really the All-You-Can-Eat / Buffet-style Appetizer Station. There was a rather vast selection of appetizers that we could choose from, once we placed orders for a main course. There were assortments of cha soba (cold greentea noodles), riceball desserts, cherry tomatoes, baby corns, grilled vegetables, fish balls, soya beans, fried yam balls etc. It was a spread, and definitely tempting to try everything.

In the end, I just had a modest serving of Chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg), a handful of cherry tomatoes, baby corn and fried yam ball. The Chawanmushi was tasty, but a little diluted. The fried yam ball was fragrant and rather crispy on the outside, sweetly sticky on the inside.

My main course came first - Curry Vegetable with rice - a large pot of bubbling hot curry filled to the brim with colorful ingredients such as hard-boiled egg, baby corns, brocooli, carrots, capsicums, brinjal and mushrooms. The curry sauce was just nice - not too thick or diluted. Best of all, it was the first Japanese curry that I'd eaten that was spicy instead of sweet. I liked this!

Hifumi is a good place of appetizer buffet which is worth the price! I ordered chicken tonkatsu but the chicken tasted a little salty. The appetizer buffet was good though. Chawanmushi is a must try! There are other varieties such as rice crackers and potatoe salad too. You can also have free flow of drinks at an extra cost of 1.90 per person.

Generally I thought the food here at Hifumi was average but the range of appetizers is amazing and unlimited! If you're looking for a reasonably priced Japanese sorta buffet place then this is the place for you. I believe it is worth a shot. Everyone seems to love the curly fries so do look out for them!

Buffet (Appetizer bar) is included in each set meals so we started to go get some appetizer to eat. One thing to note is that if you are not having set meals, it is better not to eat here as their drinks are super expensive if buying through à la carte (It would cost additional of S$1.99 for each set meals).

Super small buffet corner with limited variety of dishes to choose from.
The buffet corner is just under the pillar and there are not much things to choose from as most of their dishes here do not really catches my eye or stomach.

Drinks corner where you can choose any drinks here for additional S$1.99 with each set meal purchased
The drinks corner is much better with different choices of drinks including machine made coffee / English tea bags and soft drinks. It would be great if all buffet had these type of drinks station.

Teriyaki Chicken Set @ $13.99
The whole set is being served with miso soup and rice. The portion is quite small though I like the sauce being done over a hot plate. The meat is not really great though can still be passable dish.

Baked Chicken Set @ $11.99
The chicken meat is being wrapped with some paper marinated with Japanese Pepper Sauce before being baked in oven (If I am not wrong). The taste is not bad but does not really taste great type.

I was wondering what my friends & I should have for dinner after we met up at Plaza Singapura. In my memory, there were no particular restaurant that I like here. When my friend, C mentioned that we could try Hifumi as she had eaten here before, we just followed her choice. The sample sets outside the restaurant look not bad. As we were there way before dinner time starts, we took our own sweet time to check out the free flow appetizer bar. Actually, none of the appetizer looks appealing to me!

As we were there way before dinner time starts, we took our own sweet time to check out the free flow appetizer bar. Actually, none of the appetizer looks appealing to me! But after my friends got some of the sweet potatoes and mini tako-balls, they were not too bad. By topping up $1.99 each on top of our set meals, we get to have unlimited drinks as well. There were a selection of premium tea bags, coffee & soft drinks.

Each of us ordered a different set to try & our sets were priced at $12.99 each. We had a Saba Shioyaki, Paper Baked Chicken & a Chicken Namban Set (fresh marinated chicken with Fresh Tartar). Each set comes with a bowl of rice and a miso soup as well. I'm glad that I made the right choice to order the Chicken Namban as after trying my friends' orders, I still preferred mine. The Chicken Namban is nicely marinated & tender, coated in the batter.

After we finished our main course, we had some Chawanmushi from the appetizer counter & some macha mochi desserts as well. While we were chatting away, a waitress came to inform us that our time is UP! Seriously, we have no idea that there is a time limit in the restaurant. It would be better if their service staff had informed us upfront before sitting us. Overall, the food were not too bad for a budget Japanese meal.

While I was spoilt for choices at the "new wing" in Plaza Singapura with all the affordable lunch deals from neighbouring restaurants, I was drawn to Hifumi for two reasons: 1. I love Japanese food, 2. Free flow of appetisers at a relatively affordable price. I've previously dined at places with free flow of drinks or desserts, but appetisers was a first and I was intrigued to try it out.

All set meals come with access to the appetisers bar and it does offer a range of delicious and interesting Japanese snacks. In contrast to most other restaurants, you can try small portions of every appetizer available and fill up your plates with those that you love. According to a friend who dined here previously, the appetisers are on rotational basis and are not always available. Nonetheless, I would recommend the Chawanmushi, which is soft, silky and piping hot and contains mushrooms, crabmeat and the occasional prawn. The Fried Sweet Potatoes are a must-try and we just couldn't stop after taking the first bite. They are coated with a sugary surface that make them all the more sinful (but awesome). The vegetable bar (that comes with spicy miso sauce or cheese sauce) is rather decent. I also enjoyed the cocktail fruits after my meal, in which the canned fruits (I presume) were complemented with fresh watermelon and dragonfruit. The downside is that the appetisers were quite cold when I ate them (except the Chawanmushi, which was kept hot by a machine) as they have been left out for some time, but the staff do refill the bar quickly when it is finished. To maximise your experience at the appetisers bar, try and look out for when the food items are refilled with hotter versions!

Overall, I loved the concept of the free flow appetisers and their offerings are actually good. The main courses were also pretty good.

I tried the Paper Baked Chicken ($11.99+), which is supposedly the Healthier Choice. I mean, it was definitely the healthier choice since the pepper sauce was not very salty. The chicken was tender, but it was not marinated enough as the insides of the chicken meat felt quite tasteless and I had to roll it in the pepper sauce a couple of times before it tasted good.

On the other hand, the Garden Vegetables in Claypot Hayashi Stew Set ($12.99++) we ordered came with amazing sauce. This dish is on the monthly promotional menu. We didn't know what Hayashi was (apparently it's stewed beef cooked with onions), but the sauce was just so tangy, flavourful and thick. It even served well as dipping sauce for some of the appetisers, such as the deep fried tofu which came with too little meat sauce.

There is also an option to purchase free flow of drinks for $1.99++ only and they have a drink pantry of soft drinks, coffee and tea. I was overall satisfied with my Hifumi experience and the spread and quality of food justified the price tag (which is not really that steep). I would come again to see the other appetisers they have to offer.

I love tomato, but having it as a soup with my japanese rice doesn't work for me.
In the end, I kept stealing my bf's curry sauce hahaha
I highly recommend you to order their curry set because the sauce was good.
His set comes with a chicken thigh, eggs, brocolli and mushrooms - we even took our own appetizer and dipped it into the sauce.
For my tomato soup base, the main ingredient was the pork sausage.
However, the pork sausage tasted really artificial - don't expect it to taste like bockwurst, they're vastly different.
Their pork sausage tasted more like the non-dried version of lap chiong....weird!

Bonus points to the ambiance though, since the restaurant is located at the extension of PS, it was less crowded.
We reached here at around 5 plus and we were the only few customers, shortly streams of customers came in.
Doubt I'd come back again though, unless I'm really running out of ideas on what to eat.

At this restaurant, you can give the Appetizers buffet a try for FREE*. It includes japanese dishes like 'Soba', 'Takoyaki', 'Chawanmushi', etc. Since it's free, the taste of most of the appetizers are pretty normal. However, there are some exceptions too. 'Eel & Clams Rice Box Set'
My favourite Japanese set Meal would be 'Eel Rice Box Set'. Therefore, I ended up placing an order for this the other day. The delicious taste that you are getting when you mix all the 3 main ingredients(Eel, clams and cucumber) together are fantastically good. The crunchy cucumber and the fresh ingredients are something that one could really look forward to.

The best part of the dinner was actually the appetizer bar buffet.
They offer wide variety and selections of food.
Each and every one of them was mouth-watering!!
You can actually be full by eating just from the appetizer bar itself.
You can never resist the temptations of the food that were served there.

"Welcome to Hifumi Japanese Restaurant!"
... was what I wanted to hear but instead it was..

"How many?"
"You can only eat for 90 minutes, you okay?"

Hifumi is a wallet-friendly Japanese Restaurants that offers all-you-can-eat appetizer bar when you order any of their set menu.. (kinda reminds me of Ponderosa and Sizzler which have ceased their operations in Singapore..)

Also, you can just pay an additional $2 for free flow of drinks that ranges from soft drinks such as Gingle Ale and Mirinda, to hot beverages such as Mocha, Latte and Green Tea.

Salmon Oyako-jyu Set ($17.99) was pleasant visually.. the generous portion of salmon and salmon roe had totally covered the box of rice.. I took the first mouthful without any wasabi and soy sauce.. (-_-) the salmon was of room temperature..

by right, the chilled raw salmon should be taken out for cut when they prepare the dish.. hence, if the salmon was of room temperature.. either they did not chill the raw salmon or they had prepared the dish beforehand and served it up when someone ordered it.. it was the first time I ate my favorite salmon so slowly..

Saba Shioyaki Set ($12.99) looked good.. apologies for not having any comments on how it tastes cos' I'm not a fan of saba..

The appetizer bar was definitely more star-worthy than the main sets.. Takoyaki and Onion Steak were the latest items introduced about 5 weeks ago.. I don't eat onions so you won't see that on my plate..

Takoyaki was passable.. alternative meaning that you can really pass on it..

I really wanted to tabao (take away) Sweet Potato Fries soooo much.. It was fried to crisp and then stirred in sugar syrup and glazed with brown sugar powder.. This dish was super powerful! I could snack on this for 90 minutes..

Rice Cracker was to be eaten with vegetable gravy.. but the vegetable gravy is not in the picture.. the gravy was cooked with onions, cabbage and carrots.. thickened with starch.. good to have with a bowl of rice.. (^o^)

Vegetable with Cheese Fondue has vegetables such as broccoli and potatoes.. I took potatoes only.. hahaha.. I'm not an "avid" vegetable lover.. but as all of us know.. anything with cheese just won't go wrong (most of the time)..

Chawanmushi was nicely done.. to the extent that it surprised me a little.. the silken egg was soft and smooth.. it was so nice that I had 3 of this! besides a cube of mushroom and crabstick.. there was.. a SHRIMP!

My number one dish: Pumpkin with Walnut Salad.. This was super delicious! The mayonnaise / salad sauce was not too creamy and thick.. so it was just nice.. This was another dish that I want to tabao too!!

Soba with Sesame dipping sauce was a pretty generous dish to have on an appetiser bar.. especially if it's all-you-can-eat.. this was not mine but I heard that it was refreshing and nice.. and of course filling too..

Radish with Minced Chicken tasted healthy.. hahahahaa.. in other words, bland.. like hospital food.. gosh..

While rubbing the full full tummy, finish the meal with something sweet like Fruit Cocktail!

Time to review other aspects of the restaurant..

Service: BAD! No greetings, no smiles, no courtesy.. The first Japanese restaurant that does not say "Irasshaimase" (Welcome/Please come in).. When I went to pay.. the staff did not talk to me at all.. she was talking to the waiter.. pointed at the amount I had to pay and put her hand out, asking for my payment.. after I handed her my credit card, she left! and asked the other staff to print out the receipt for my signature.. Omg..

Ambience: Spacious.. which was really an important point because there were a lot of space for you to move around to get your food and drinks!

Hygiene: FAIL BIG TIME! They do not use disinfectant spray to wipe the table.. I saw the waiter wiped the table with a cloth and swept the bits of food to the floor and some flew onto the chair.. he did not bother to clean the chair.. it was like that when I was there watching him clearing the tables..

Verdict: Though the service was bad, the hygiene was not up to standard.. I will be back for second visit! because I only spent about $20 per pax and I felt like I had eaten an ala-carte buffet.. Worth it!

I was here with my loved one over the weekend...Is long queue so waited around 20 to 30 mins to get a table for 2...First off, the appetizer bar is free, and the dishes are surprisingly varied and tasty...(We liked the Chawanmushi.) For additional $2, you can get free flow drinks, which is also a sweet deal... Chawanmushi Tonkatsu --> the bento set are actually quite healthy as they using vegetable... Chicken Itame --> Tasted ordinary, basically a dish of sweet and sour chicken on rice
