The stable of Ichiban restaurants can always be relied upon to serve up affordable, localized version of Japanese staples ranging from sushi and bentos to tempura and donburi. Ichiban Boshi has recently revamped and expanded its menu, introducing many new Japanese tapas or appetizers. We dropped by to check out their new items and the petite portions all added up to quite a filling meal. The Chicken Salad $5.90++ was tasty with lettuce, shredded lean chicken and strips of bell peppers tossed in a creamy sesame dressing. The Dobinmushi $7.90++ looked enticing on the glossy menu but turned out to be disappointing and not worth trying. Photo was deceptive and the portion was pathetic. Dashi broth was bland, the lone shrimp was not as fresh as it should be and horrors, it had shredded surimi crab stick instead of enoki mushrooms (see pix). The crispy sweet amebi shrimp $5.90++ was light and morerish, but the chicken kushi $2.30++ per skewer was run of the mill. The rice was served in a hot stone bowl with a braised egg and green tea on the side. Pouring the tea into the bowl sizzled and warmed up the egg. Satisfying and filling as a meal on its own especially in the chilly air conditioned restaurant. Choice of toppings include sliced kurobata pork, isari clams, minced salmon and yasai tempura. We picked the salmon and tempura rice bowls. Salmon was good but pouring the tea over the tempura-topped rice caused the vegetable fritters to turn soggy defeating the purpose of ordering tempura. We ordered the momo peach ice cream $7.90++ to share. A little disappointing as it was just plain vanilla ice cream encased in a peach-shaped white chocolate shell. No trace or fragrance of peach at all, so this dessert is all form no 'substance'.Service by the foreign crew was good, and the environment was pleasant and quiet due to its CBD location devoid of families. continue reading

I've got Japanese food craving so without thinking much I drag my hubby to Ichiban Boshi to have our dinner. Mentai salmon sushi, Flamed mentai sauce siting on a fresh half cooked salmon served with sour vinegar pearl rice, Delicious! Crispy Soft Shell Crab wrapped in crunchy lightly salted seaweed hand roll is nice. Sweet and succulent teriyaki chicken goes well with both light and mellow tasting udon and cha soba. Craving Satisfied! continue reading

I tried the Tonkatsu here as I heard that this outlet specialises in Kyoto Katsu, i.e. Pork cutlet. The breadcrumbed coated patty was fried just nice without being too browned, so it provided a good crunch and once you sink your teeth it in, the juiciness of the pork is incredibly satisfying. I love the play of textures and it was a pleasant change from my usual fare of sushi. continue reading

After trying the tempura ice cream from the previous outlet, i couldn't resist but head back to ichiban boshi for its delicious tempura ice cream again! The outer layer of the ice cream is encased in a crispy, chewy tempura batter and dribbled with strawberry sauce on top! Cut open the 'ice cream ball's to reveal soft, and cool vanilla ice cream! Be careful to finish this quick- the ice cream tends to melt really fast! continue reading

My first visit to Ichiban Boshi turns out to be a place I would want to go again, despite the weird first impression I had when I first reached there. On Valentine's day, I was greeted by waitress, who told us that there were only TWO meal sets available that day. Only 2.. Which means the entire menu is not available, except for the sushi. I was left with no choice but to choose only 1 of the two. I was upset about the lack of choice, but went in nevertheless. My friend recommended me there.Food was alright. Sashimi is very fresh and good. In fact, I have never liked sashimi and I barely try them, but Ichiban Boshi really made me ate quite a bit. It is that good!Other dishes are alright, and I recommend the sushi. Very fresh.Customer service is terrible. If there is one reason why I dont want to go back there, it is their service. Plain water takes a long time to come, and we have to specially request for it. The waitress did not know how to communicate effectively with the customers - their command for language is bad. Once, they forgot the serve my cocktail, which is included in the Valentines Day set meal package!! Whenever I tried to ask a question, answers are often unsatisfactory and unclear.I am assuming that the restaurant is still new, which accounts for the messy service. Overall is fine, and may visit it again. continue reading
