The Hana Maki ($3.00 for 3 pieces) blew me away with its freshness at such an affordable pricing, with a melt-in-the-mouth texture that slides down the throat easily. The Japanese mayonnaise added a light flavour to the sushi. The only disappointment came from the roe on the mayonnaise, which was lacking of a bursting sensation.

Apart from serving the typical sushi commonly found, iSushi ($2.00 for 4 pieces) also serves innovative variations that infuse local flavours as well. The Chili Crab Sushi is one such Maki that brings the best of both worlds. Though it may not be as spicy as expected, dip it into the soy sauce and wasabi and it instantly works magic in your mouth by bringing a tinge of spiciness with a streak of numbness, bringing the tastebuds for a ride.

If Chili Crab does not suit your fancy, try the assorted box of Chicken Rice and Nasi Lemak sushi ($2.50 for 3 pieces). Each box comes with two Nasi Lemak and one Chicken Rice sushi. The Chicken Rice one is a piece of roasted chicken (with its skin on) over rice with seaweed wrap. It was really an interesting combination largely due to the fact that the rice was the same flavoured rice from the Chicken Rice that we are all familiar with. The Nasi Lemak sushi came with peanuts, Otah and Ikan Bilis which was an interesting fusion of textures, but the letdown was bland rice missing of the signature coconut taste.

iSushi also serves bento for those who prefer a full meal. Teriyaki Salmon Bento ($6.00) comes with Chawanmushi, salad and jelly. The Teriyaki Salmon was tasty with the sauce which gave it a subtly sweet yet alluring saltiness. While that being so the texture of the salmon was as firm as chicken, which was a bit too hard for my liking. The Chawanmushi did appear fine and tastes pretty ordinary but turned out to be a bit too mushy inside, while the salad turned out to be crabsticks with a single piece of vegetable with Japanese mayonnaise drizzled on a single crabstick. The jelly was a wee bit too solid, but it is of the same type you would find in a cup of bubble tea.

The Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak and Otah Sushi is yet another infusion of local food into the sushi. One thing about the sushis is that they are made in detail; the Chicken Rice sushi was made using chicken rice instead of the normal sushi rice, as do the Nasi Lemak and Otah Sushi, both using normal rice, although a bit of coconut flavur could be tasted.

The Hana Maki is probably one of the best sushi here. The salmon was flavourful and with the mayo, it tasted even better.

The Assorted Maki are great too, although not awe-inspiring.

The Teriyaki Salmon Bento is also a cheap alternative to other Japanese bento sets offered in other restaurants and food courts.

It comes with a chawanmushi (which I initially expected it will come with a miso soup instead). The salmon tasted not bad, although it was rather stiff. The rice was rather sweet, something that I didn’t really like as I wasn’t use to having rice that sweet. The chawanmushi is nice to have as its not too overpowering. The kani (crabstick) and jelly (cocktail jelly) was rather normal in my opinion.
